The best thing about Synthesia is how quickly it helps us turn ideas into professional, engaging video content. As an e-learning developer, I’ve used it for onboarding, safety training, benefits communications, and multilingual learning experiences—without the time and expense that usually come with traditional video production.

My biggest wish is for more advanced image-editing capabilities within the platform. I often have to rely on Photoshop or other design tools to tweak images before importing them into Synthesia. The requirement to have an enterprise license to publish and be able to use all of the interactivity. Our enterprise has to publish to MP4s and publish to a Kaltura video site which decreases the amount of hotspots and interactivity I can build into each video. I like the simplicity in getting started with Synthesia. It was possible to simply jump right in and begin creating my first video, without receiving any type of training. Creating scenes (whether new or based on a template), editing them, adding a script, and previewing them (including with narration) is quite intuitive. It's actually simpler than creating a PowerPoint slide, with a more interactive and engaging deliverable.

Their AI avatar features are also quite impressive, especially when it comes to selecting and editing an avatar to match the tone, guidelines, and needs of a client brand.

Additionally, customer support is also top notch. They're very kind, patient, and do not stop until your challenge is resolved.

Finally, the ROI in terms of hours saved is unparalleled. As a designer for over 15 years (including video design), the ease of use and quality of work that can be generated in a short period of time allow me to focus more on video strategy and objectives, rather than on the mechanics of designing videos. New features can sometimes take a moment to figure out. An example is saving avatars for future use, or determining how to create specific animations within a scene.

Generating the final video is an extremely simple process to initiate, however generation times for the final video can sometimes be (not always) a bit laggy. The final video itself has always been perfect in terms of resolution and performance, though.

Pricing can feel a bit high if you're using Synthesia sparingly or want to access some of the higher tier features (e.g., adding interactive quizzes to your final video). However, if you or your team are creating videos regularly or in high volume, Synthesia would be a great tool (with a low barrier to entry) to add to your stack to quickly onboard active designers and non-technical users alike. Synthesia helps me take a lot of content information and turn it into training employees can actually follow and use. I build onboarding, leadership development, and process training for a university with multiple campuses, so clear, consistent communication is important to me.

The scene-by-scene layout in Synthesia is especially helpful because that is how I think through my training. I can organize the narration, visuals, and examples around what employees need to know and how they will apply it in their roles. Being able to work through individual scenes makes a larger training buildout more manageable.

The AI avatars and narration are a big upside. I can create presenter-led training without coordinating a live recording for every topic. I also appreciate being able to revise the content when a process changes and provide a consistent explanation across campuses.

One improvement I would like to see is built-in spell checking, or a more visible way to flag spelling errors while I work. When I am building training with multiple scenes, on-screen text, and narration, it is easy to overlook a typo. Of course, that is also me—I tend to focus on the forest rather than every tree, making sure the overall training flows and connects with the learner. Having spelling flagged directly in the editor would help me catch those smaller details before generating the video and make my final review more efficient. My favorite feature in Synthesia is the AI Avatar, and also I can create high-quality videos quickly from a simple script. I also like the new features such as Sessions, Avatar Builder, and Developer Tools. Synthesia's commitment to continuously adding new capabilities is what I value most. What I dislike most about Synthesia is the limited tracking and control available in some interactive experiences.

When using Interactives, learners cannot easily identify which tabs or sections they have already completed and which ones are still pending. Unlike Storyline, there are no clear visited/completed states to help learners track their progress within an interaction. Another challenge is with AI-generated footage. The maximum footage length is typically limited to around 8 seconds, which can be restrictive. Sometimes my narration is longer than the footage duration, causing the visual to end before the narration is complete. This can create a mismatch between the audio and the on-screen content and requires additional editing or scene splitting.

Even though I like the new avatar and background customization scenes, there’s still one thing I don’t like. Before, I could easily copy an old prompt, but now that option feels kind of hidden. Sometimes I can’t find it, so I end up rewriting what I want.

Another issue is that, in some languages, the avatar’s accent sometimes switches to the wrong one even when I’ve selected the correct option. Synthesia has really changed how we create tutorials for our language training—both internally and for our clients. Sometimes it’s unclear which features I actually have access to on the Creator plan. Often, things look clickable, but then I find out I need to upgrade to use them. I also sometimes find it difficult to navigate between the different elements on a page, which can make the overall experience feel a bit confusing. Customer support has been a bit hit or miss when it comes to answering questions about subscriptions. I don't find the chatbot particularly useful. I use Synthesia primarily for college training videos. Using the built-in and selfie avatars has made video production so much more efficient, reducing my production time from twenty hours to just two. I like that Synthesia is constantly evolving, and the beta-based personal avatars are a game-changer. They're simple to use; all I need is a still photo and a short script. What I like best about Synthesia is how quickly I can turn an instructional concept or written script into a polished, professional video. The AI Video Assistant gives me a strong starting point. At the same time, the templates, avatars, voice options, and drag-and-drop editor make it easy to customize the presentation for a specific audience.

As an instructional designer, I especially value the ability to revise a video without rescheduling a recording session or starting over. If content changes, I can update the script, adjust a scene, and generate a new version in much less time than traditional video production would require. This is particularly useful when developing learning experiences for older adults, where clear narration, readable text, thoughtful pacing, and a welcoming presenter are essential.

An unexpected benefit has been how easily I can experiment with different approaches before committing to a final version. Synthesia allows me to test the organization, tone, visuals, and pacing of a lesson early in the design process. Overall, it helps me produce engaging learning videos more efficiently while still giving me enough creative control to make the content feel purposeful and audience-centered. Synthesia works well as the primary video-production tool within my instructional design workflow. I use Canva and Figma to create branded graphics, diagrams, interface mockups, and other supporting visuals, then bring them into Synthesia. PowerPoint presentations and written documents also provide useful starting material for the AI Video Assistant.

After producing a video, I can export it for use in learning management systems, presentations, websites, and eLearning authoring tools. I can also bring the finished video into Camtasia when I need more advanced editing, detailed audio adjustments, or visual effects not available in Synthesia.

The overall workflow is reliable, but not every connection is seamless. Some tools require manual exporting and uploading, and imported visual elements may flatten rather than remain individually editable. If an original Canva or Figma asset changes, I may need to update and replace it manually in Synthesia.

The main limitation of Synthesia is that the AI presenters can still feel somewhat scripted. Their gestures, facial expressions, and emotional range do not always match the meaning or tone of the narration. This becomes especially noticeable in scenario-based or emotionally sensitive learning, where a more natural human presence is important.

The automated video creation tools provide a useful starting point, but the generated scenes often require additional editing. Text may be too dense, visual choices can feel generic, and the pacing is not always appropriate for the intended audience. When designing for older adults, I frequently need greater control over narration speed, pauses, text size, and the amount of information presented in each scene.

I would also like more flexibility in customizing avatars, movements, camera angles, and visual transitions. Synthesia works well for presenter-led training, but videos can begin to look repetitive when the same layouts and avatar behaviors appear across multiple scenes.

Finally, plan restrictions and video-generation limits can make experimentation expensive. Previewing avatar movement and narration more fully before using generation time or credits would make the design process more efficient. More natural avatar behavior, stronger accessibility controls, and finer control over pacing would make Synthesia an even more valuable instructional design tool.
