E.g. context and ch. limits are very clearly displayed in the CAT tool view, which makes it easier to deal with a large number of linguists. Also, issues are clearly flagged. **What do you dislike about Smartling?** The content search function is not very precise, specially with very big translation memories. This means that depending on where you start your search from, you'll likely to see different results: I often have to enter a single TM to be able to find precise results. Also, it's not always clear how you can go from strings view to the regular view, and vice versa. I think that it would benefit everyone if clients know all the ins and outs of the Smartling platform, especially with such an innovative tool like this one, so that they truly understand the benefits of the cloud platform vs. a more traditional offline translation approach. **What problems is Smartling solving and how is that benefiting you?** I have been using Smartling for over 10 years now and have experienced the benefits of the platform through different roles during these years (Freelance Translator and also Project Manager). The main benefit of Smartling is that the platform is super intuitive to use and you quickly find your way around - at least from a Freelancer's perspective. The tool allows the translators and editors to work in context mode. This means that you see in real-time how your translation will look on a website for example. This is super important for languages that are usually longer than English (German, I am looking at you 😉). You can see in the context window if you are translating a title or a call to action button for example. The translation interface offers several sections with additional info to optimize the translation process (e.g. TM Search, Style Guide, Glossary, QA in one window; Issues, String History, Keys and Additional Info in a side panel etc.). Smartling allows me to be super productive and the translation process is very smooth and collaborative which saves a lot of time. Also, their support team is super helpful if something is not working as it should. ### 10. It lets you get hands-on on the task pretty quickly thanks to its localization features and you can easily access the glossary, style guide, context visualization, attachments, etc. **What do you dislike about Smartling?** Not the best CAT tool, a bit simple interface. It would be great if context and search TM results could be displayed at the same time in parallel or something (instead of having to switch tabs all the time or to open them in a new window). The task assignment process is quick and smooth, the platform is very user-friendly and the TM as well as all the other language resources are easy to access to always ensure consistency throughout a project. The system also allows you to preview your translation in context (where provided by the client) and to directly communicate with clients whenever clarification or more context is needed. We used the GDN solution so the localized architecture is completely separate from our CMS. This was important as we were migrating from one CMS to another thus making the migration seamless when it came to our localized pages. There is a lot to like with Smartling; robust translation workflows, the ability to translate Marketo forms, multiple edit modes that allow you to update translated content on the fly. It is a very flexible platform and we have been able to successfully launch several languages quickly. I would also say in terms of customer service they are really terrific. I have really been happy with the people at Smartling; they are super helpful and responsive. **What do you dislike about Smartling?** The main challenge we have is certain languages like Japanese are not great for string-to-string translations. Smartling is mostly built for string-to-string translations and when you move away from that, to say a trans-creation model, the benefits are diminished in terms of translation memory. **Recommendations to others considering Smartling:** I think if you are doing localization for the first time this is a really good solution. **What problems is Smartling solving and how is that benefiting you?** Smartling helped us localize our site in several languages and now we are in a position if we need to add one or two more languages it is not hard to do. We had to chase our CSM every time there was an issue. There was almost no support. It felt like we were in a bad marriage. We tried other competitors, and nothing worked with our instance of WordPress. The exact match can be so slow that you get an error message. TM Manager (TMM) tool can be prohibitively slow that prevents from doing TM management tasks. TM management itself is not very flexible. Access levels are not customizable and do not allow many roles. Term Base window is not very user-friendly and displays unimportant information blocking the important one (e.g., list of target languages takes too much space with little benefit). The window should be more customizable (my feeling is that it was designed for 40-inch screens). Would be nice to have in the TB more options for translations that have variants. TB export could be more customizable (what fields to export).
