Easy to Use, but Poor Support, Surprise Fees, and Translation Errors **Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Verified User in Retail | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** May 05, 2026 **What do you like best about Smartling?** platform is fairly easy to use, but that's about it. I've not had a great experience overall. **What do you dislike about Smartling?** The customer service has not been to the standard we were hoping for. We've had to spend a lot of time arguing with our reps to get what we need or what was promised. When we moved from basic to enterprise we were also not informed about 10% project management fees. Translations are not always accurate - many times things are wrong. Once a project was translated into the wrong language and not what we requested. Many other times we're needing to have internal reviewers make a lot of edits that their human reviewers missed. UX is not the most modern looking and is not entirely user friendly. Difficult to manage projects that are uploaded but not submitted, and hard to check/assess if all lines have been picked up by their AI when dealing with larger files. **What problems is Smartling solving and how is that benefiting you?** It's helpful to be able to manage multiple languages in one upload and to have the approved library to auto translate, but overall it's caused more problems than it's solved with the errors in translation that need to be reviewed and fixed by our team. ### 2. Good GitHub integrations, but overall experience needs improvement **Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Verified User in Construction | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** February 04, 2026 **What do you like best about Smartling?** It has a good integrations with github and the smart-match feature, easy to implement and good documentation **What do you dislike about Smartling?** Interface isn't good also the lack of mobile SDKs. **What problems is Smartling solving and how is that benefiting you?** Translating english to all the languages needed within a short time. ### 3. Unintuitive **Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Verified User in Translation and Localization | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.) **Reviewed Date:** February 23, 2025 **What do you like best about Smartling?** It works reasonably well, but nothing exceptionally positive sticks out, other than that it's easy to search in TMs or the glossary with shortcuts. The context tab is good, when there is actual context there. **What do you dislike about Smartling?** It sometimes groups several segments into one. This makes me automatically hit “enter” when I’m done with the first segment, so I accidentally feed bad translation into the translation memory, since I haven't reviewed the rest yet. When jumping between words using Ctrl + arrow, the cursor ends up at the end of a word rather at the beginning of the next. This is different from how it’s done in Word and creates all sorts of frustration. The tiny jobs are not time efficient and it makes for inconsistent texts, since context might show up in a different job. Big jobs are better, where you have a chance to understand what you’re translating and get an idea of what terminology to use and maybe realize things and go back and make changes after a few hundred words or so. Direct contact with clients is not a great setup. They don’t always answer questions in good time and we translators are more used to communicating with project coordinators. Good TM percentage matches should go before AI matches. Right now it seems AI matches go first. 100% matches from the TM should also auto-propagate. There should be an easy way to say “I’ll do the jobs I have, but I can’t take more” and not just “I’m available or not.” It should be possible to insert individual tags instead of having to highlight the text to insert the tags correctly. I’m fairly used to various online translation software, but this one seems unintuitive and hard to understand. It’s like it’s been created for programmers who understand a certain kind of logic. The "upcoming" list never seems to come up, but other jobs do without no warning or no ability to negotiate deadlines. **What problems is Smartling solving and how is that benefiting you?** I'm one of the translators. It's the work tool I've been made to use. ### 4. The automatic completion of glossary terms is handy too. **What do you dislike about Smartling?** Lack of flexibility, the translator can not use their glossaries to improve work. **What problems is Smartling solving and how is that benefiting you?** It is not a choice of mine to use it and I don't feel it benefits me particularly as a freelancer. ### 5. After many years working with the product, seems to be making some more marked strides **Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Verified User in Real Estate | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** November 18, 2019 **What do you like best about Smartling?** It connects with a lot of CMSs and has more advanced ways of capturing visual context than many other CAT tools on the market. **What do you dislike about Smartling?** - very sales-y vibe and not able to account for product shortcomings - FAQ/documentation not robust or up-to-date - don't collaborate with LSPs as much as needed - lacking features that are considered industry standard for all other CAT tools (this seems to be slowly changing) **Recommendations to others considering Smartling:** If you are looking for a great connector to your content for seamless translation of your technology products, I recommend it. I do not recommend it for companies with a very mature localization model or who want to partner with more than 1 LSP. I do not recommend Smartling for those looking for an LSP, as quality has not been high with their freelance translators and partner LSPs, in my experience. **What problems is Smartling solving and how is that benefiting you?** -
