User research software, also known as user experience (UX) testing software, enables organizations to better understand their users. It provides insights by analyzing what users think, feel, say, and do at various touchpoints in the product development lifecycle or customer journey.

These platforms offer a range of UX research methodologies to streamline the research process and uncover how and why users behave, make decisions, and interact with a product. User research tools can offer features to recruit participants for studies, import existing customer lists, or have an internal, already existing panel of users and ideal customers.

User research tools utilize user research methods such as surveys, focus groups, diary studies, interviews, and different usability testing techniques (card sorting, A/B testing, etc.) to provide organizations with actionable qualitative and quantitative data on how users interact and experience their product or website experiences. This data can be used to drive innovation, enhance customer satisfaction, refine messaging, and create user experiences that are intuitive, efficient, and engaging.

These tools are used by UX teams, research teams, developers, product managers, and marketing teams. UX teams and product designers use insights to create intuitive interfaces, while developers ensure technical feasibility and optimize product performance. Marketing teams use user research tools to test and enhance messaging throughout the customer journey to enhance customer satisfaction. Product managers utilize user research tools to guide feature prioritization and align development with user needs. By integrating research throughout the product lifecycle, teams create user-centric solutions that improve customer engagement and retention.

User research software often integrates with or shares features of enterprise feedback management software, to gather and analyze customer insights. Further, these tools can integrate with survey software, consumer video feedback software, and mobile marketing software to engage with users and visitors. The information gathered from user research can be stored in user research repositories software.

To qualify for inclusion in the User Research category, a product must:

Offer qualitative and quantitative research capabilities
Offer two or more UX research methods, such as prototype testing, concept testing, usability testing (for example, A/B testing, card sorting, tree testing, etc.), or user testing (for example, focus groups, surveys, interviews, diary studies, etc.)
Facilitate participant recruitment and feedback collection to gather insights into user behavior, feedback, and decision making
Provide features or integrate with tools that help tag, sort, and share individual interviews and responses for analysis to enable organizations to make the correct optimization decisions
