"NPM- Total Network Management and Performance Package"

What do you like best?

Free fully functional Demo. The ease of setup and scalability should you need to grow/shrink your installation. You can connect multiple data collectors, networks and architectures and have a NOC dashboard as well as a granular view of each switch if needed.

What do you dislike?

It is not inexpensive, and requires a bit on investment to user properly. Be ready for this, and you will love the features. Additional servers are not cheap, so choose your deployment wisely and cover whats needed.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Try the demo first and fully setup and test the software. You will find its well worth the price.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

General network overview to see how all spokes are operating and track down latency/service issues. There is the ability to fix deep networking issues with VoIP and packet loss due to distance and EMI. Customer 'ghosts' that otherwise would be very hard to track down otherwise. Allows us to prove certain services are causing issues.

What Network Monitoring solution do you use?

Thanks for letting us know!

"NPM for the gold"

What do you like best?

The ability to have config backups and use those backups for config checks. We have port-security on a set of switch ports and we can check every night that those ports still have it configured. As well when no security policies are put in place we can check all routers for the new config and make sure it is there.

What do you dislike?

Not really fair but there is a lot to configure. That is because there is a lot it can do. It is important to spend the time and get the full use of it. It can be overwhelming in the beginning while you are setting things up and very time consuming.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Don't be overwhelmed with the amount of features it has. There is a lot to it but worth it. They offer free trial on all their products. Install it and play with it. Or even better they have a web portal you can use that has data there so you can see all their products and features.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The ability to see all the routers and switches configs and easily search them is incredible.

"Always surprises"

What do you like best?

I love the way this product is evolving... I have been using NPM from more than 3 years now and from the time I started using and what it has reached now, is just commendable... the dashboards, widgets, different views, small small features like mute alerts, creating icons etc are few which I would like to call out here..

What do you dislike?

not much in this section for now.. I would like to see how it catches up with drastic changes that are happening in the network area like new technology launches from different top network vendors like Cisco.. Also would like to see how SW-WAN will be accommodated in monitoring....

Recommendations to others considering the product:

I would suggest to definitely go for this product.. you have option to evaluate and see of yourself..

coming to comparison with prod, u will get help from support on this as well and they will make sure you get what you are trying to reach for...

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

well, it gives different options.. right from low level to high level like using Netpath which enables the team to know exact pain point and not waste time.. if a customer is only initiated in basic monitoring then that's also available without much effort...

"NPM Rocks!"

What do you like best?

The ease of use and ability to adapt. Other packages are either difficult to administer and/or difficult for non-techie end-users to interface with. Solarwinds is easy to use, and easy to administer. It's also very quick to get up and running and at least somewhat productive. It is very extensible and customizable, which once you start working with this will make you even more productive. The other modules that are offered, such as NCM, NTA UDT and IPAM, are great too. And this is just on the networking side, they have extensive server/storage/database monitoring also.

What do you dislike?

Lack of granular controls on administrative privileges. The inability to merge the data from an old device to a new one that replaces it, such as bandwidth statistics.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Get a demo. Be active on Thwack.com, their user community.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Solarwinds NPM makes it easy for Network Engineers to monitor many aspects of their network devices. This information is easily accessed by them in order to help diagnose issues, forecast capacity and many other things. More importantly the user-friendly UI makes it simple for managers and others to get in and check things out or create reports for metrics. The UI is easily customizable to facilitate different audiences using it, such as managers or NOCs. Its also very extensible to be able to draw out information important to your organization. I've used it at 4 different organizations and every one was pleased with its abilities and performance.

"Hard to use product made easy."

What do you like best?

The solar winds community (THWACK) is by far one of the best NPM community’s offering every support solution paid support ever could. from custom monitors, reports and even support for issues outside of SW. Both the free and paid SW support is also great. There is nothing you can’t monitor with SW, although built in support may not naively exist, the platform is very open ended to develop your own monitors.

What do you dislike?

Very complex monitors sometimes take hours to set up with countless time spent on testing, checking metrics, setting alerts and then reviewing the community when all else fails. it really can be a full time job just managing the back end DB and all of the monitors for a small to medium NOC. quite resource intensive on the network, can add to latency in ping time when you have 1000s of nodes monitored remotely.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Check the Fourms and community first, when calling free or paid support often the first questions out of their mounts is if you checked the knowledge base first, and often times their only support is to send the the applicable community or KB article.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Complex network monitoring both on site, through multiple data centers, all the way through the network to customer sites, including monitoring video bandwidth, network latency, even when employees dock their computers in the morning. it is also great for monitoring SW versions and patch history, Service tags or SN's for inventory purposes and Costing for network usage across multiple sites.

"Excellent Tool to monitor your network"

What do you like best?

You can see all your network components behavior in one point. With this tool we could see what network node is the bottleneck, see each interface and what is happening.

We can monitor from one point all the vendor hardware that we have in our network, we don't the proprietary software to see what is happening.

We can set up alerts, and create report easily, so we don't need to be connected to the software to see is there are alerts going on.

What do you dislike?

The creation of custom reports is very hard to understand sometime you need to connect directly to the database to get better information or to personalize better the report depending of the business demand.

The setup of each components to get better information is not to easy, you can configure each elements with smtp but for better information you should need an agent to understand better the information from the devices.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Try to license all the network elements from the beginning and use solarwinds to consolidate all the monitoring of your datacenter. That will help you a lot with the administration of your environments.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Now, we can monitor all our network devices for each vendor in only one point and be confident with the information that we see in the screen.

We can realize is there is an issue without being connected to admin console. We can see the critical root of the network path.

We could customize alerts depending of all the group of devices we already created

"Good network troubleshooting app with extra add-ons"

What do you like best?

We've used NPM for several years to monitor for potential network issue and the ability to alert us to take action before the crisis hits. Tech support is very responsive.

What do you dislike?

Aggressive sales team. We use the VoIP and Network Quality Mgr as well and get regular sales calls and emails pushing other products. We have what we need so the constant sales pitches get annoying.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Product provides a great set of tools for alerting but need to be set carefully to balance the amount of alerts otherwise you can get too many alerts that are not critical.

Can easily create different levels and alerts to provide info or critical notices.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Identifying potential network issues before they become business impacting. We get 24/7 monitoring and alerts in advance so we can respond as needed to keep our systems up and stable

"Solarwinds NPM-doing enterprise monitoring before it was cool"

What do you like best?

I find NPM to be very easy to use. I can pretty much always figure out how to do something without having to refer to documentation or support. To me that is a credit to the user interface and wizards.

What do you dislike?

I feel the product is at the upper end of what I'd expect to pay. I also have found the hardware requirements to be somewhat high (to be fair-we run multiple Solarwinds apps on the server).

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

NPM was really the base or our strategy of moving from reactive IT to proactive. Monitoring things such as WAN utilization to server resources permitted us to identify issues before they became critical and resolve them sooner.

"Solarwinds NPM great monitor at a reasonable price"

What do you like best?

Network Performance Monitor comes with a lot out of the box that you can get your monitoring and alerting environment up quickly. The SolarWinds' Thwack community has a lot of additional objects available for those odd ball items in your infrastructure. This demonstrates the flexibility of this product allowing it be be a great fit into our infrastructure.

What do you dislike?

There are very limited options for style, such as the capability to use a Dark Theme.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

If you take advantage of the SolarWinds community on Thwack you will be guaranteed a successful deployment.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Getting more detailed information about systems performance to isolate root cause faster. The level of detail provided in NPM is a mainstay for our support team.

"With NPM we can know what services gets affected and take corrective actions rapidly"

What do you like best?

I like the fact that Network performance monitor is a core essential tool for any solarwinds deployment. The way NPM correlate performance with the devices its really great. I can know exactly if my network devices are performing well and pinpoint when there are issues. For a telecom company that I work, this insight of all the networking devices all over the country its a must and we cannot live without it.

What do you dislike?

Well I think there is no disliking of any kind. I am really happy with our setup and the way our NOC department use it to know exactly where the issues are, and who to contact, itr really neat.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

I think that NPM is one of the core modules every company should have if they are considering Solarwinds as their monitoring tool. It is easy to learn and has a lot of info for you to know exactly what is going on with the network devices.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

With network performance monitor, we can resolve the network issues rapidtly and also prevent degradation of the network. Being a telecom company this is one of the core operations. We can take advantage to monitor not just the internal network, but until the last mile and customer devices. So we can get the big picture and monitor end-to-end. We complement with other solarwinds products like SAM. Its really a great tool and we now can focus on the planning part more than the troubleshotiing part.

"If you can pay for it, just get it. It's the best."

What do you like best?

NPM has been a no-brainer for us. Functionality is top of the line, great for SWQL and SQL integration, customization is basically endless. We've only been using this for several months but we've realized that NPM's automation can be really powerful too.

What do you dislike?

There's a pretty hefty learning curve; also, the interface is a bit of an eyesore (but it's the functionality that really matters). It's also pretty expensive.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

If you can afford it, just buy it. The price tag can be a bit hefty, but if you have sponsorship this will lighten the financial load tremendously and you can get some serious bang for your buck!

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We've done a lot of remote systems monitoring, troubleshooting with our tech support team, and performance analytics with NPM. We love it so far.

"Monitoring Master Made Easy"

What do you like best?

The best part of NPM is the amount of customization and notification that can be done. The ability to either dive deep into services or routes or just see if the device is pinging is great. The notification settings that can be customized assists with the ability to separate the alerting to various groups within an organization.

What do you dislike?

Setting up SNMP alerting is a bit harder than I first expected, but once the first few were figured out, it became easy.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

The product is very well created and maintained. For the best results, one should be adequately already familiar with like products to set it up properly. That being said, the support team is superb at assisting every step of the way. The product is expensive but very well worth it.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The problems being solved were being notified of issues. Once I was able to get the snmp traps built and notifications set around those traps, things went very smoothly.

"NPM - alwyas have answaer for your netrwork monitoring"

What do you like best?

The best part of NPM or soalrwind is its simple monitoring configuration for simple administration.

Its a enterprise level monitoring system which also have integration with other modules.

It provide a complete information for monitoring & very easy to implement. its start monitoring from the moment it has implement with all default configuration.

What do you dislike?

Some time End Users or non admin user comes to me & say some time its difficult to get report or information in soalrwind. from End User perspective I can use stand the pain as in other tools its just a one or two click away. but in soalrwind , I know its a enterprise & powerful tool you need to dril down some time to get simple information.

other part which require is topology , so end user can visualize the monitoring system & understand in one shot what is wrong & where is wrong.

I think dashboard re place where if we have automated topology kind of dashboard or single pan of dashboard then its look great.

Newly added net path service is great but some time I get requirement to have point to point path, I mean from one IP to another IP.

on network overview it has only monitored interfaces, but if it has all interfaces then it will be easy to choose what to monitor.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

if you are finding enterprise level monitoring then soalrwinds is correct one.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are monitoring all n/w devices & its helping us to do proactive monitoring or to detect the issue much faster.

Very active and involved user community at Thwack.com, got a question or trying something new search for it or ask it there a user / product developer or the product owner from SolarWinds may answer the same day. Solve a challenging issue in your environment, share it with the user community.

What do you dislike?

Runs only on a windows platform and has to write some log files to the OS drive.

Pro-tip: Workaround available for the one thing I dislike.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Excellent 30 day evaluation is the full blown product

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Clients experiencing and complaining of poor business application response caused by clients at the same location over utilizing network bandwidth for non-business activities.

"NPM - Ease of Netowrk Monintoring Software"

What do you like best?

NPM Orion has good coverage of network component monitoring and has a excellent web interface which allows new user to easily understand the dashboard and data metrics. Also it has a good integration with other Orion product to get full stack of performance data. NPM has a very good intelligence of providing the perf stack metric which help us to pin point the problem in appropriate application layer.

What do you dislike?

It would be better if NPM can have more scalability for large network environment. Also product should focus more on database performance specially for large network. We would like to see more element can be monitored with NPM by keeping in mind of database performance. Also, we would like to see if SolarWinds can provide database schema to understand data structure.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Highly Recommended

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It helps operation team to proactively spot the problem before it become a real problem. It provide lot of reporting and alerting feature which is used to future planning and proactive monitoring of our network.

We are monitoring our QoS data and it really help us to analyze bandwidth usage of our network.

"Network Performance Monitor has made my job easier"

What do you like best?

The ease in which it can be setup. It is also easy to manage and track issues that occur. The dashboards are very cutomizable and you can choice what you want to see.

What do you dislike?

The product has everything I could ask for. I have found nothing I disliked about this product.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

This product is a great tool in monitoring your network. It provides several ways to track and monitor what is happening and gives you a great base of operations to build from. They have several other products that attached to this that can be useful.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It has given me alerts to servers and Infrastructure that are down or having issues. I can see what the problem is and correct it in a couple of easy steps. Having a real-time view of my site-to-site VPNs has been a great help in keeping my remote sites up and running. I have also found the wireless heat maps to be useful in tracking down issues of coverage.

"NPM. THE monitoring solution!"

What do you like best?

This is a very highly customizable product, while it maintains its ease of use. The web interface is amazing and everything is running on Windows OS. SolarWinds has a strong user community (Thwack) where custom templates and solutions can be found. Using custom properties allows for a complete dynamic structure and automation of monitoring and administering nodes

What do you dislike?

Complex licensing model, it would be good to see more integrations to other products, CMDBs in particular.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Make sure you have a complete inventory of the infrastructure that you plan to monitor to make management even easier. Joining the Thwack community is also beneficial to gain from real users' experience! The admin guide is a bit bulky but worth reviewing if any issues occur.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are able to determine any current issues with the infrastructure and also benefit from pre-active alerting. Capacity planning is another big plus as well as reporting to determine any bottlenecks in our network. It is also great that VM monitoring is offered out of the box, we were able to solve several Virtualization-related issues before they come up to the surface!

"To be "in the Know" you need the right tools!"

What do you like best?

Where to start? Being able to tweak or configure each window (Home, Summary, etc..) for each department in order for them to get the data they need immediately is priceless. Some products I have personally used in the past create more work trying to isolate data or nodes, rather than SolarWinds NPM design negating the need to dig through tomes of unneeded information, the data you need is front and Center.

What do you dislike?

Integration with Fortigate products would be a major improvement, I have heard it is in the works. Custom Colour in Orion would be nice (A Dark Theme)

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Check the online Demo Site - speak to the sales staff and do a 1 to 1 Demo.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

My biggest benefit using NPM has been the ability to ensure Servers, Switches, Routers and other such network devices are operating within normal parameters. I had an issue where on one of our remote switches on a predictable schedule several ports would go down, affecting several of our Staff as well as the Printing. Thanks to the data provided by NPM I was able to isolate the issue to a particular network device that was causing the issue, saving much frustration by myself and the affected staff.

"Solarwinds NPM - It saved us some serious money"

What do you like best?

The Network Performance Monitor addition to the Solarwinds Orion product has been one of the most beneficial purchases for our organisation. It allows us to proactively monitor our network infrastructure and fix faults long before they have an impact on our customers. In the event of an unforeseen issue, we are immediately alerted to it and often make it to site as the calls come in. The automatic discovery process allowed us to find legacy switch infrastructure that was no longer supported yet still included in our maintenance contract. Overall, we were able to remove almost £500,000 worth of support contract, which is a substantial saving. NPM more than paid for itself.

What do you dislike?

The dashboards in NPM (and most solarwinds products) require a lot of customisation, as do any reports you may wish to create. It requires a substantial man-hour investment, whereas "out of the box" configurations could be better.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

If you can afford it (we do get government discounts) then it is possibly the best product in this area I've used.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We have realised financial benefits to almost half a million pounds with NPM. We also utilise NPM daily as part of our operational support processes to pro-actively monitor our network infrastructure.

"Reliable network monitoring"

What do you like best?

What I like is the high degree of customisation of the product: from alerts to reports and views. Alert variables is a very powerful functionality that allowed us to significantly reduce the number of alert definitions and get more value out of the resulting ones. We also use custom properties for a variety of purposes (grouping, alerts, NCM jobs etc). I also am a very big fan of SWQL (an SQL queries) and the fact that it can be integrated in so many areas of the software. Recently we have started using the API for more am more automation and we found that it can also be a very powerful functionality.

What do you dislike?

It would be very useful to have a number of utilities integrated into the web console : Report Writer, Trap/Syslog Viewer, Universal Device Pollers. Having to log in to the server for to run each of those utilities can be a bit awkward, especially when you are using the tool from a mobile device.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The biggest benefit that NPM brings us is in alerting; we have highly customised (using variables or SQL/SWQL queries) alert definitions that allow us to monitor every important aspect of the network and integrate with 3rd party incident management solutions.

"What's Happening in the Network?"

What do you like best?

The ability to drill down from a summary page into a problem to find the device or interface that is in need of attention. Once the situation is found and fixed, you can use SolarWinds NPM to confirm the problem is resolved.

What do you dislike?

It takes a bit of getting used to when you have never used it. The interfaces are a bit spartan but we don't use for its good looks.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Make sure you have someone dedicated to the task, not just a part timer, with some serious SNMP experience for the greatest effect. If you don't have a good installer, the experience may be sub-optimal. Like any large scale, extensible product, you will need someone to care for and monitor it periodically.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We have baselined our entire network with SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor. Now we use it to establish trends and detect anomalies. We have plenty of history saved to be able to compare against when troubleshooting issues.

"SolarWinds NPM monitors almost everything in your infrastructure"

What do you like best?

1. Easy to install

2. Easy to manage, monitor and administer your infrastructure

3. Licensing cost is competitive

4. Monitoring and alerting capability

5. Custom alerting which includes auto correlation is very much possible

6. Reporting capability is great (custom reporting is possible)

7. NPM as well provides a feature called UNDP, which allows you to create your own custom poller via SNMP poll on the OIDs that are not used by SolarWinds NPM to monitor the underlying infrastructure. (The above statement talks about creating custom monitoring which solarwinds npm doesn't provide by default, say if there is a requirement to monitor a KPI that solarwinds npm doesn't monitor as part of their of built in monitoring, you can always create your own KPI using UNDP)

8. Views / Dashboards can be customized to a greater extent

9. Can be integrated with AD&LDAP for access to Solarwinds NPM Web GUI, its not always necessary to create a application user or windows based user to access SolarWinds.

10. Scheduled monitoring is available (say suppose you want to unmanage or stop monitoring few devices due to scheduled factors/known downtime , thats possible in solarwinds, you could either unmanage the device or mute the alerts associated to those devices)

11. NPM can consume snmp traps and syslog messages from underlying infrastructure.

12. NPM integrates well with Service Now and other known Manager of Managers via SNMP Traps and syslogs.

13. It as well has a scope for automation but needs to be explored and can be performed as required.

14. It as well contributes to NetPath and Perfstack which are few good features that are available on the tool.

15. It as well has a High Availability capability and could be setup on need basis for HA and DR as required.

What do you dislike?

Cant think of anything for now, I have been associated with solarwinds npm for more than 7 years now I do agree there are few things here are there which is not in sync with what vendors in the market provide but it definitely is a great tool.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

NPM is a great tool for systems and network infrastructure monitoring, license cost is less, its easy to setup and its a feast for administrators. You could deploy and start monitoring your infrastructure in less than a days time with NPM.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Most of it has been explained above, majority of our customers use Solarwinds NPM and its a great tool for monitoring systems or network infrastructure, saves us a lot of money by keeping its eyes rolling over business critical devices.

"The perfect network monitoring tool, with intelligent alerts, network maps, and great analyzing tool"

What do you like best?

Its in-depth web-console give great insights within the network.

Simplicity of use, great analysis tools, range of support for different devices.

Manageability across different vendor products.

What do you dislike?

the licensing is node based, and gets used up quickly,

it needs to be more flexible.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Kindly consider to calculate the nodes that you want to add before hand to decide on the licenses .

you can still easily remove nodes if you find that you don't have enough licenses. however make a list of all that you want to include in the tool, calculate the nodes as per reference. this might help you handle your licenses in a better way.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

we have achieved business problems like Network Monitoring, effective troubleshooting, monitoring remote systems with the help of windows and linux agents, sending alerts , insights within the network and detailed analysis of the network, network path maps for better visualization.

"Solarwinds NPM "

What do you like best?

NPM offers high visibility into your network with a user friendly interface. The product offers a high level of customizability allowing you to honing your monitoring and alerting needs. Getting the product up and running is pretty straightforward. The learning curve comes in when honing your monitoring. Support is responsive and reliable. The Thwack community also offers helps for deployment and management questions. The interface offers loads of charts and graphs allowing you to show how your network and key interfaces are performing.

What do you dislike?

No particular dislikes with the product, however it does take time to deploy as you pull in your network devices. Since licensing is base on the number of elements being monitored (devices and interfaces), you need to be knowledge about what you're monitoring. Charts and graphs can take a little time to tweak to get the data that's relevant to you. Creating custom reports also isn't intuitive however the Solarwinds support is great at assisting you when needed.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Do through research on what you need to monitor as the licensing structure is based on how many devices and interfaces your are monitoring. Signup and get active on the Thwack community as this is a gave resource for getting the product setup.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Solarwinds offered a centralized location for all team members to analyze performance of the network and related devices, Alerts allowed us to respond to outages quickly and reduce downtime for users. "Solarwinds NPM Review"

What do you like best?

1. Ease of operation

2. Cool Widgets with fast results

3. Netpath is a must have! gives accurate visibility into the network

What do you dislike?

1. CPU Utilization is not accurate

2. no CLI Based conditions

Recommendations to others considering the product:

They give you a 30 day demo to test their modules, which you should take advantage off, the account managers are very helpful, ask them what you need, ive had session with support where they showed me the ins and outs before purchasing. they also have Virtual classrooms that show you the newest features where you can ask and have a chat with other customers.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

1. Monitoring ISP Hops using Netpath which can minimize my time in troubleshooting in case the traffic was facing problems outside my network.

2. My own view that has Utilization charts that shows me exactly what happened in the last 24 hours for example.

"Thanks to NPM I can sleep!"

What do you like best?

We really appreciate the ease of use and how the application works consistently each and every time we ask it to.

What do you dislike?

As with any product worth it's salt in the monitoring world you'll find a that the price can be cost prohibitive depending on how much you plan on monitoring.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I would not hesitate to recommend any of the SolarWinds products to anyone in need of a monitoring solution.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Our NPM installation allows us to immediately catch when a circuit is having issues. Many times we are able to be alerted and resolve the issue without affecting the end users at the affected location.

"My NPM Experience"

What do you like best?

NPM is the core module for Solarwinds that links all the elements together. Its simplistic nature is what makes it brilliant for me. It mostly bring all hardware, network and vital stats together and inter links them into easy to navigate views

What do you dislike?

unfortunately at the moment the views are very restrictive on how you can customize them. I personally would love more freedom to move resources around the page. as it stands they use column based views. I would much prefer a free moment tiles based system. Like how windows tablets let you. Some times to make things fit onto a NOC view you have to put resources in places you wouldn't ideally like too. This can mean views look clunky and unprofessional.

Solarwinds have worked hard on views like app stack and perf stack however these are useless unless you have all the modules needed. Such as SAM or SRM for example.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Make sure you do your home work. To me you need at least SAM as well if your monitoring Servers and NCM if your doing network kit. Although NPM is great, stand a lone you can really miss other key insights.

WPM is also a most for web apps

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

personally there are too many to list. The vast majority are performance issues. High CPU, high RAM (Low RAM with some SQL issues). Bandwidth bottle necks on wrongly provisioned ports. for example using 100mb when it was supposed to be a gig link.

Volume stats and checking. Including forecasting and predictive measures on CPU, RAM and Volumes.

"Essential Monitoring For Your IT Environment"

What do you like best?

The ability for this software to give real time information about devices that you have added as well as to provide forecasting capabilities so that you can plan ahead.

What do you dislike?

Setting up the some of the alerts are not as straight forward as I would like and you may have to do some custom scripts for some aspects depending on what you are trying to achieve.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are able to be alerted about any issues that occur on our network. Be it high CPU utilization, low disk space, virtual machine loss of connectivity, node disconnection and high link utilization. Thus allowing us to identify the issue quickly and implement a solution.

"Excellent product which will change how you work."

What do you like best?

NPM offers a number of features out of the box which help with day to day monitoring. The alerting system is highly customisable which makes thinks work in your environment that much more effectively. Whether you need basic down alerts or detailed information NPM covers it all. The reporting helps see trends and the overall use helps you see the bigger picture on a day to day basis.

What do you dislike?

It can take a little while to tweak to your preference and get it working seamlessly. It requires a lot of resource which has caused us to upgrade twice in order to get it working at an acceptable speed etc.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are able to see down nodes before customers even realise which makes our diagnostics and down time go a lot quicker. We are no longer in the dark and can now spot patterns a lot quicker.

"Powerful network monitoring, easy to set up, attractive dashboards"

What do you like best?

Network Insight for ASA, Netpath, Perfstack, Windows and Linux Agents, support for wireless controllers... there are so many features packed into NPM. We are able to quickly and efficiently diagnose network performance issues across our entire environment. The development cycle for NPM is also very active, they are constantly working on new features.

The Thwack community is also an amazing asset to owning a SolarWinds product, there are thousands of users there discussing ideas, issues, and IT topics in general.

What do you dislike?

Some parts of the UI could use reworking and can be cumbersome for creating groups and dependencies for a large number of remote networks

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are able to scale our environment accurately by using baselines collected in NPM. Performance issues can be easily found and alerted on, reducing downtime and improving user experience.

"SolarWinds provides the flexibility needed to monitor small to large networks with the NPM"

What do you like best?

With the NPM, SolarWinds provides a core module with which it is possible to quickly and flexibly implement a network and server monitoring with multitenant capability.

Within a few hours a multi-vendor surveillance is installed and even alarms and reports are configured.

What do you dislike?

For more than 6 years, we have been using SolarWinds with all our customers and I really can not find anything negative.

Feature requests from customers are taken seriously.

new products are integrated, existing products are developed further in short cycles

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Visit Solarwind's Roadshows, the Solarwinds Thwack Board, to speak with customers, developers, and the sales team

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

With SolarWinds, we've been able to consolidate multiple different network, server, and application monitoring tools from different customers.

This results in a shorter deployment time, lower network administration costs, less capital expenditure

"5 years using it and really quite enjoying it"

What do you like best?

It has both simplicity and complexity. Meaning that it is very easy to setup the basics, allowing to start monitoring things quickly and then add the complexity as required. The custom properties allow for some much control and logic to built into the system. The GUI is also easy to use and customise.

What do you dislike?

I would have said the mapping, but the latest release has made some real improvements.

The alert logic could have a little more depth, as an Orion user minimising alerts is two pronged fork, reduce the number (or improve the quality) of the alerts going out, but also minimise the number of alert configurations (less administration especially in multi-tenanted systems).

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

A very capable monitoring system, allowing enterprise scaling, at a reasonable cost.

"Truly a lifesaver... "

What do you like best?

We have been using NPM for two years now and it has helped us numerous times identify network issues even before the customer noticed there was a problem.

What do you dislike?

I would really like to see a way to have IPAM and NPM work together.

Recommendations to others considering the product

My role primarily focuses on the SAM side of Solarwinds but I have assisted with configuring some of the network. I recommend downloading a trial and when you sign up, set it up right from the very beginning. If you do not set it up correctly, you will be highly annoyed by the unnecessary alerts. If you set it up correctly, it will help you in the long term to effectively monitor your network.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We have seen benefits with improved up time and happier customers.

"The Standard in Network Monitoring"

What do you like best?

So much in one pane of glass. You can see an overview or detail by a single click. We live by the alerts.

What do you dislike?

Licensing is a little burdensome. Each port on a switch takes up a license. It would be nice to just be able to select all ports. Now we have to just do the uplinks and then add and remove other ports on the edge to get baselines or see what is going on.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

It is good to work with a third party or solarwinds services to get it setup to begin with. Then you can start adding monitors.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Getting instant info on up/down or port utilization is huge for any I.T. dept.

"SolarWinds NPM - But wait! There's More..."

What do you like best?

The intuitive GUI. The ease of installation. Agentless. Data visualization, ease of customization.

What do you dislike?

The efforts required to upgrade and apply patches is still not as seamless as one would hope.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Define your scope! Take a "Business" approach to customizing this product. Understand your business functions, service tiers, service owners and more. Understand what is important to them and avoid alerting on everything. Identify their need and customize SolarWinds to fill that need.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

IT Service and server availability. Hardware and software inventory. Capacity planning and forecasting. Enterprise Architecture documentation.

"Managing Network Alerts and issues"

What do you like best?

Our teams like having one place to go to manage alerts and performance monitoring, especially as using text or email alerts tend to just get lost as noise.

What do you dislike?

We have had no issues thus far; we are still working on adjusting the alert thresholds to be sure we have the things that are important to us.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Having one place to go to see and resolve issues; we no longer text or email issues/alerts to our agents, keeping those channels open for more important things. Right now we are only using it in sub-production, tweaking it for the alerts to fit our needs.

"Out of the box usability"

What do you like best?

Pre-built dashboards and alerts allow you to add your nodes and immediately get value.

What do you dislike?

Picking and configuring device templates is either really easy or really hard. If you run in to an issue getting a device template working or understanding how they measure ingress/egress it is a steep learning curve.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Run the free trial. You can see if it will work in your environment and integrate with your workflow. Ever software has it's quirks and SolarWinds lets you try pretty much anything for free. Take advantage of that.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It is a go to in troubleshooting network issues. We identify and alert on our critical network paths. This enables us to be proactive instead of waiting for user reports.

"My NPM experience as a first timer"

What do you like best?

This is my first time using SolarWinds and although there is a bit learning curve to get your head around once your in your in. The sheer power of NPM is astounding to me, if I had this in my last few work places my life would have been a whole lot easier. Once you use it on a daily basis you very quickly begin to be able to customise the system to your needs and its power really start to shine.

What do you dislike?

At the moment I dont feel like I have a dislike with NPM.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

I would recommend to anyone starting out to sign up to Thwack and look through all of their videos, guides and get involved with the community as it really does help.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Over the years of us using SolarWinds we have been able to trouble shoot network issues and maintain network hardware across the board because of the clarity of our network NPM gives our engineers. This has benefited us greatly as countless hours as saved by using NPM and integrating other modules.

"The standard for network performance monitoring"

What do you like best?

Works with almost all network products and can be customized using universal pollers to handle almost any imaginable product. Breadth and depth of data it can capture is very good. Reporting is customizable and can be automated to send standard reporting at regular intervals. Additionally thresholds can be set on multiple levels. Mapping can be used to show relationships in a visible format.

What do you dislike?

Same as with other Solarwinds products, automation is unsupported and you are left to your own devices to figure out how to perform automation tasks. The Network Performance Monitor product does not have a way to perform an unattended install so deployment in a DevOps environment can be tricky.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

OpManager was tested and has a simple deployment and good feature set

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Network Performance Monitor is able to provide a complete view of the network layer. This allows us to determine where and when bottlenecks are occurring so appropriate parties can be engaged. If incidents occur we are able to quickly pinpoint the location of the event in our network and after the event is resolved, root cause evaluation is facilitated by the data collected in the Network Performance monitor.

"Can't live without it"

What do you like best?

The best part of NPM in my opinion is the advanced alerts and all that you can do with them. Basic alerting will lead to many false positives but with NPM you can quiet your alerts down to just what you want to be alerted on... which is the main idea right?

What do you dislike?

I wish there were more alert actions available for advanced alerts. For example, rather than have a sound play, I would like a popup alert to trigger on all admin's desktops. There are ways to script something like this which just shows how flexible NPM is, but I would like to see more built in actions like a popup window for example.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Check out some of the other modules from Solarwinds that works in tandem with NPM. Server & Application Manager is my favorite and there are so many more to add on to this amazing tool belt called Network Performance Monitor

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are solving the need for automatic problem resolution with NPM. This benefits us because things go bump in the night and we're not a 24/7 operation... with NPM we're able to monitor for those bumps and automate the fixes so we're not having to wake up and login for every little bump.

"NPM Performance and monitor the resource capability"

What do you like best?

SolarWinds is good orgainization, that is bulidiing the best tools for Infra and Cloud, applications monitoring,

Where NPM is the core product of solarwinds, it is providing the capability to maintain the all infra, cloud, specially hardware monitoring of device, In IT world have lots of device, network, server, cloud, etc And i can ensure that NPM have power to gather the all information from device according to severity and present to user in dashboard format, which is very easy to understand.

i can believe there in no such tools available in market which helps you can get all information in easy way.

What do you dislike?

As far as, i did not feel something that present me NPM have not capability, it is overall capable and handle to do all type of monitoring.

NPM have default many option to get the all information of device and put into readable format in dashboard which is the awesome feature.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Benifit perspective i can ensure you will not miss anything, who is imapacting your business, you can get the instant information about the alert from NPM and maintain the devices issue and back the bussiness normal,

"You're going to want to monitor your network"

What do you like best?

Solarwinds gives us the ability to track all our network nodes, go back in time and assists in finding out what is causing a network bottleneck. there are a ton of features that come out of the box and has the ability to get customized to your hearts content. it has built in support for tracking wireless controllers other appliances. really great community on Thwack, you can get almost everything you want if you look hard enough.. but it may just take time to implement :)

What do you dislike?

Some things don't really work the way you expect them to.. like the Poll now button.. running some jobs can really take a while. sometimes the page loads very slowly and i have noticed that if a page requests too many resources it can affect the experience of other users as well. other than the occasional service stopping, it seems to be reliable.

the technical support hold music is also pretty bland

Recommendations to others considering the product:

be ready to spend time troubleshooting : )

it's good to have people that are already experienced with the tool, as it can be a little bit overwhelming to someone who hasn't used it. You also may want to spend time with your users and ask them what they want to see in dashboards.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We can make reports detailing circuit utilization over time, this gives us the necessary justification for upgrading. it has pretty decent reports for inventory and firmware versions. you can also make reports with SQL.

"Easy to use for non-network administrators"

What do you like best?

NPM provides insight into the network without being a network administrator. It is a easy to setup and maintain and provides data that would not typically be seen if you don't have the technical skills to get to that data.

What do you dislike?

There is nothing I don't like about NPM. The only thing I wish Solarwinds did would be to include the services of NetFlow into NPM for a single lower price.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Works great alone, but it works even better with the rest of the SolarWinds products to give you overall view of performance of your systems

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Using NPM allows us to easily see the network performance of all devices on our network. We can use the data to see how much data is being pushed from our IIS servers or how much data a user is pulling from our filers. NPM also shows the performance of our Cisco switches which includes the network usage on each port, CPU usage for the switch, and also the health of the switches. NPM makes it easy for a non-network administrator to view all this data that would have never been seen otherwise.

The NPM NetPath service is also great to get an idea of connections speeds across your network. With complicated networks it would provide a deep look on how your network traffic is routed. You can also use NetPath to let you know if a service users connects to goes down (i.e IIS services, Facebook, etc...)

"For infrastructure this is a highly customizable option with the reasonable price"

What do you like best?

NPM allows for the creation of custom monitors via SNMP. If you add SAM, you can build just about any custom monitor you want using SSH, SNMP, HTTP(S), or WMI.

The page layout, reports, widgets, and alerts are all customizable.

It's easy to get up and running within a day.

What do you dislike?

The event table doesn't use a regular message key to mark that event as unique. This makes it difficult to map properly within Event Management that wants a unique for each event.

It needs to be a little more scalable for enterprise implementations.

To get the most out of this product you need the other modules.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Make sure if you do a demo to work with their team. This ensures they know exactly what you are doing and won't call you everyday to ask you to buy.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

This allowed us to monitor all of our network and power devices in a single platform.

"The Swiss Army knife of monitoring tools"

What do you like best?

Ease of use, intuitive GUI, flexibility, great platform. Constantly improving and releasing new features that really help! With NPM & SAM you can realy cover a lot of your infrastructure and know what is going on in your environment. Bolt on a few other Orion platform products and you really have a large pane of glass to look through at your overall envrionment(s). (Note: I don't believe the single pane of glass exists, but this gets you close!)

What do you dislike?

Great Cisco support, lacking other major players in many areas still. Support appears to have a lot of turnover which makes getting help a bit rough.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

This is a product for Admins & Engineers. No fluff or inflated prices due to sales jet setting around the country to sell it. Does what it says it will do, and does it well. Fantastic community for support as well!

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

With NPM as part of our Orion stack we're able to really monitor our on-prem infrastructure. We monitor network devices, servers, UPS devices, and just about anything that we need. The benefits to having a tool like the Orion platform is that it truly gives you a go to place to investigate and check up on your environment.

"Making Life Easier in Short (Literally) "

What do you like best?

The best way is to describe Solarwinds NPM is like a present like you unwrap it and find the goodies inside. NPM also either when you are setting it up or doing a drill down analysis you get everything and everything you need to to

What do you dislike?

Its to customize-able and yo get lost initially of what you have to setup and and for me it was alot of manual work, i would like more automation especially when it comes to alerting, alot of the common alerts so be setup already. MIB's is the biggest pain for me as well like why cant i be easier to work with it.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

" SolarWinds NPM Review"

What do you like best?

Great product for monitoring multiple vendor IT networks. Scale-able, affordable, quick and easy to setup. SQL Data structure means you can get under the hood for alerting and reporting purposes.

What do you dislike?

A lack of security on the newer UI elements and other modules (Netpath) in the Orion suite of tools. This can be mitigated if very carefully setup and controlled by experienced professionals. Therefor not making it suitable for most MSP Providers. Development priority can sometimes be given to future growth areas rather then fixing the base problems with the platform.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Experienced staff to run the platform to get the most out of it. Database Administrator to make the performance as good as it can be

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

flexible API means Solarwinds can be truly integrated into other business process applications. This means end to end automation is possible for adding, modifying and removing devices from the platform.

"Feature Rich Monitoring"

What do you like best?

Several new and innovative additions to the new release. Contextual mapping available from supported hardware by a simple click of a submenu, with no additional configuration necessary

What do you dislike?

They tend to stay on the upper edge of the supported platforms to run the latest platform. While support remains great for older versions of their software the latest and greatest requires late model OS and SQL. Thankfully the new online installer removes a lot of the upgrade anguish.
