Pivotal Tracker allows you to define standards for how you work without feeling oppressive in your workflow. Pivotal Tracker is a really useful project management tool for everyday work, the platform is quite easy to use and browse, and I particularly enjoy the locking function. In addition, it is an easy software to implement and easy to integrate with other platforms. **What do you dislike about VMware Tanzu Labs?** I recall being a little puzzled about how to browse the various pages when I initially used Pivotal Tracker; the user experience could be made a little more intuitively. Although it is a fantastic platform, it does feel a little old at times because tales can only be viewed as a list; I wish it had other forms of graphics, such as decks. **What problems is VMware Tanzu Labs solving and how is that benefiting you?** Pivotal Tracker, which tracks project processes and tasks inside a project, helps a worldwide team to be on the same page about where a project is, what is being worked on, and by whom. At work, I use Pivotal Tracker to enter problems and feature suggestions for engineers; the software allows us to communicate effectively and is simple to use. ### 2. For the view, I can set up my columns to see the state of the current sprint at a glance, as well as manage the priority in the backlog and add tickets into the icebox. I can also filter by the work assigned to each developer, which is useful during Sprint Planning. Creating tickets is very easy, you can set up different templates to capture all the necessary info for a bug or feature. The labels are also useful for seeing the state of a specific project. We use "epics" for our release and major projects. Overall, Pivotal Tracker is a great tool. **What do you dislike about VMware Tanzu Labs?** When we were trying Kanban, Pivotal Tracker was not the best tool to view different states of the ticket as swimlanes. We made it work by assigning specific labels and new views to sort by those labels, but Kanban is not the best method to use with this product. Instead, the tickets are color coded by state and listed vertically in the Current Iteration. The column starts to get very long for some of our teams with large sprint workloads. **What problems is VMware Tanzu Labs solving and how is that benefiting you?** Pivotal tracker helps me organize and prioritize the upcoming work for development. Using it with Scrum is helpful because my team reviews items in the backlog during Backlog Refinement where we can determine if any critical information is missing from the ticket before they start working on it. Once the ticket enters the current sprint, I can easily view the status of each item, whether it is in development, being reviewed, or ready for review. Before this product, my company used a very standard Waterfall method with a different system which did not allow us to see all the work that was being done in one place. ### 3. In regards to those features, Pivotal delivers as promised. They also have a companion mobile app which is great for quick reference. It is very specific for software development teams, which is great if you're exclusively working on a software project. **What do you dislike about VMware Tanzu Labs?** The user interface and onboarding process leave a lot more to be desired. It is very plain and subdued, and no real way for someone new to Pivotal or a project to learn/understand the software quickly. It is set up similar to a kaban board but when you try and drag and drop tasks it won't let you and provides no explanation. I wouldn't call Pivotal a complete project management app, but more of a planning and task management app. **Recommendations to others considering VMware Tanzu Labs:** Take advantage of the free trial to make sure it works for your organization before making a purchasing decision. Try out a couple of vendors that offer a freemium or scaling price package and let your developers try it out. Some favorite features around here include: setting release targets, creating a Workspace to track multiple projects, assigning reviewers for domain-specific tasks such as QA and code review, moving stories from one project to another, sorting and filtering cards by epic and label, and assigning users to a card. Pivotal has made it incredibly easy for our organization to track the work on multiple projects across iterative development lifecycles. The minimal learning curve also makes onboarding a cinch. **What do you dislike about VMware Tanzu Labs?** The reporting features are great - but limited. You have access to a variety of canned reports, but no ability to create ad-hoc or custom reports. One thing I would like to see is more lifecycle states after the story is delivered and accepted. To be specific, I would like for Pivotal Tracker to generate smart release notes for stories that have been accepted and allow these to be emailed out to the team. So much great documentation is gathered during the life cycle, it would be a shame to not leverage the data.
