## Buyer Guide

### What You Should Know About 401(k) Software

### 401(k) FAQs

#### Most Popular FAQs

#### Which 401(k) platform has the best reviews?

Based on the G2 reviews, these 401(k) platforms stand out most clearly for overall satisfaction, usability, and day-to-day administration:

- [Guideline](https://www.g2.com/products/guideline/reviews) - A modern 401(k) platform known for a clean employee experience, streamlined payroll integrations, and low-friction plan administration.
- [Betterment at Work](https://www.g2.com/products/betterment-at-work/reviews) - A retirement platform built for employers that want transparent pricing, guided investing, and a polished employee experience.
- [Human Interest](https://www.g2.com/products/human-interest/reviews) - A widely adopted 401(k) solution focused on automated administration, payroll connectivity, and making retirement benefits easier to launch.
- [Ubiquity Retirement](https://www.g2.com/products/ubiquity-retirement/reviews) - A small-business-oriented option that is often chosen for simple onboarding and a more hands-on support experience.

#### What are the disadvantages of rolling over a 401(k) to an IRA?

Rolling a 401(k) into an IRA can give you more investment flexibility, but the tradeoff is that you may lose some employer-plan advantages. The main downsides are that indirect rollovers can trigger mandatory 20% withholding unless you do a direct rollover, you have a 60-day deadline if the money is paid to you, and a rollover to a Roth IRA can create taxable income in the year of the conversion. It is also worth checking whether your new plan will accept rollovers at all.

#### Which 401(k) platform has the easiest online dashboard for employees to manage their retirement?

The easiest employee dashboards are usually the ones that make core tasks like enrollment, contribution changes, and portfolio review feel intuitive enough that employees can handle them on their own without needing HR or a plan administrator. In practice, that means a clean interface, obvious navigation, and a workflow that reduces jargon at the exact moments when people are making decisions about saving, investing, or updating their accounts.

- [Guideline](https://www.g2.com/products/guideline/reviews) - Best for employees who want a clean web and mobile experience for checking balances, updating contributions, and managing allocations.
- [Betterment at Work](https://www.g2.com/products/betterment-at-work/reviews) - A strong fit for companies that want an approachable employee dashboard with guided investing and clear account visibility.
- [Human Interest](https://www.g2.com/products/human-interest/reviews) - Well-suited for employers that want an intuitive employee portal tied closely to payroll and contribution management.
- [401GO](https://www.g2.com/products/401go/reviews) - A practical option for teams that prioritize simplicity, affordability, and a straightforward dashboard experience.

#### What’s a good 401(k) platform for remote companies where everyone signs up online?

For remote companies, the best fit is usually a platform that keeps enrollment digital, reduces manual HR follow-up, and works cleanly with payroll.

- [Human Interest](https://www.g2.com/products/human-interest/reviews) - Best for remote-first companies that want online enrollment, automated administration, and broad payroll connectivity.
- [Guideline](https://www.g2.com/products/guideline/reviews) - A good choice for distributed teams that want a smooth employee self-service experience and minimal admin friction.
- [Betterment at Work](https://www.g2.com/products/betterment-at-work/reviews) - Strong for companies that want digital onboarding plus a more guided employee investing experience.
- [401GO](https://www.g2.com/products/401go/reviews) - Best for small remote teams that want a simple online signup flow and a lightweight operating model.

#### Does a 401(k) withdrawal affect SSDI?

In general, a 401(k) withdrawal does not reduce SSDI just because you took money out, because Social Security does not treat pension payments, annuities, or investment income as earnings for Social Security retirement benefits, and SSDI is centered on disability status and work activity rather than ordinary retirement-account withdrawals. The place to be careful is SSI, not SSDI, because SSI has income and resource rules that can be affected by unearned income. For a real benefits decision, this is one to confirm directly with SSA or a qualified benefits advisor.
