The biggest downside is that besides the fact that Word can be used offline, google docs beats word by a large margin. For example, you cannot work at the same time on a word document. It's one of the most widely used word processors, so you can usually be sure that you'll have access to any commonly used file types that you need to use. Word is still, unfortunately, prone to crashes, freezing, and bugs, and I find the continuing attempt to push cloud saving onto software makes it frustrating when I'm attempting to figure out whether my work is auto saving where I want it to. It's also got a lot of formatting and layout tools that just aren't really its strength—it's best for just writing things out with no frills, not for assembling them into a printable book. Microsoft Word is the tool I've had the most experience with through school (from elementary through college and now as a professor).
