# KTern.AI vs CAST Highlight for an enterprise IT team evaluating cloud migration assessment tools: which gives a more complete automated discovery and cloud readiness picture across a large on-premises application portfolio?

Quick take first: based on the reviews, CAST Highlight has the deeper, more broadly evidenced automated discovery and cloud readiness picture across a general cloud migration assessment portfolio, while KTern.AI's strongest assessment-specific evidence is narrower but very well matched if your portfolio is SAP-heavy specifically. Here's the fuller comparison.

KTern.AI: reviewers describe AI-driven assessments covering custom code analysis, WRICEF object scoring, and S/4HANA impact areas, with one reviewer specifically crediting it with reducing reliance on heavy manual analysis during the assessment phase. Worth knowing that most of KTern.AI's broader review base is actually about its project governance and PMO features rather than this specific assessment capability, so the assessment-specific evidence here is real but comes from a smaller slice of its total reviews.

CAST Highlight: reviewers consistently describe automated, lightweight source code scanning across portfolios of hundreds or thousands of applications, producing cloud readiness, technical debt, and open source risk scores without needing deep code-level integration, with results in hours or days rather than weeks.

For an enterprise IT team evaluating these two specifically: does your portfolio being SAP-centric or more heterogeneous actually change which one makes more sense here, or is the real difference more about how much of the tool's other functionality, like KTern's project governance side, you'd actually use afterward?

SAP-centric versus heterogeneous makes sense. From what I understand based on the reviews, if the portfolio is broad and mixed, CAST Highlight's language-agnostic source scanning gives the wider readiness picture across hundreds of applications; if it's SAP-heavy, KTern.AI's custom code and S/4HANA impact analysis speaks directly to the workloads that matter, and a general scanner will read them shallowly. The second half of your question is the sharper one, though. KTern.AI is a transformation platform with assessment as one phase, so picking it for discovery alone means buying into governance and PMO tooling you may not use, while CAST Highlight stays closer to a focused assessment tool. So the deciding factor often isn't which gives the better readiness picture, it's whether you want a point tool for the assessment or a platform you'll live in through the whole migration.
