Best ETL Tools

Shalaka Joshi
SJ
Researched and written by Shalaka Joshi

ETL (extract, transform, and load) tools are used to transfer data between databases or for external use. ETL tools are used for data replication, after which the data will be stored in database management systems and data warehouses. These solutions also help with data extraction for analytics. These software products transform data sets to operate through querying and analysis. Many companies use these tools to create a visual workflow for the data they transfer. Other uses are typically analysis, data cleansing, and structuring data.

It has become increasingly common for data management platforms to extract data from various sources and load it into the target warehouse through ELT (extract, load, and transform). The difference between ETL and ELT is that ELT uses the target system to transform the data instead of pre-processing the data like in ETL.

To qualify for inclusion in the ETL category, a product must:

Facilitate extract, transform, and load processes
Transform data for quality or visualization
Audit or record integration data
Archive data for backup, future reference, or analysis

Learn More About ETL Tools

What are ETL Tools?

ETL stands for extract, transform, and load. Organizations use this process to collect data from various sources, clean it for different applications in a staging system, and upload it to a specific database. Sometimes, organizations simply need to extract data from a platform for other uses as well. ETL tools provide a variety of functionalities to facilitate this process and mitigate issues with data management.

ETL tools work through a process of extraction, transformation and loading to help simplify the data management process. First information is extracted from internal databases, external databases, applications and systems. Next, the user converts the inputs into a more suitable format so it can be stored appropriately and easily queried and analysed later. Lastly, the polished file is typically loaded into a data warehouse or other database where it can be processed by different business intelligence software or analytics software that can be run against it at some point in the future.

ETL tools have proven to be extremely valuable to businesses when it comes to improving the quality of the information stored and analyzed by businesses. Data migration, merging, and warehousing are all important aspects of the data collection and analysis process. All these processes are greatly improved when paired with ETL tools. If they want, users can manually query information when it becomes available and store the results in a database. Alternatively, they can build their own pipeline, however, those options typically come with an additional cost.

Key Benefits of ETL Tools

  • Allow users to successfully transfer data without committing their own resources to building and maintaining a data pipeline
  • Help preserve data integrity
  • Easily scale and execute projects as they grow

Why Use ETL Tools?

ETL tools make the process of moving and manipulating data much easier; without them, employees would have to be experts in every field they use information from. Furthermore, employees would need to code all that information by hand. The typical type of data mitigation can consume copious amounts of money and resources. Additionally, it can create hours worth of additional work for developers who must constantly update those computations.

Another reason to use ETL software is the fact that creating an independent data pipeline can be extremely confusing and time consuming as the amount of information stored in a database increases.

Scalability — One reason that ETL tools should be considered in the operation of a business is that they allow for easy scaling. A successful business will grow and so will the amount of information needed for its sustainability.

Professional grade — One alternative to an ETL is for a company to create its own pipeline, but that can be problematic as the amount of information in a database increases. Pipelines need to constantly be edited and modified to handle datasets that are consistently expanding over time but also change the way information is processed. This approach can devour hours of time and is prone to human error; ETL tools save companies the time and hassle that comes with a proprietary pipeline.

Efficiency — By removing the need for constant maintenance, ETL tools improve productivity and allow developers to focus their energy on growing and managing websites or applications associated with their company.

Who Uses ETL Tools?

The main users of ETL tools tend to be ETL developers, admins, and database administrators (DBAs).

ETL developers — ETL developers are responsible for creating ETL software and implementing it within a company. They periodically update the software as needed and modify how data is processed when necessary. In addition to creating ETL systems, developers manage ETL systems to ensure they are functioning properly and efficiently.

ETL admins — ETL admins have a wide range of responsibilities including performing standard importing of data and exporting of data, reporting the health and status of databases, backing up and recovering an ETL system, fixing bugs and optimizing the ETL software, and establishing roles and permissions for users in designated databases.

Database administrators — Usually employed with larger companies, database administrators are responsible for regulating and storing information. Their duties include designing databases, migrating information, and cleaning it as needed before it’s dumped into a repository. Typically, but not always, the DBA will be responsible for extracting all data from available sources before loading it into another system. However, they will always be responsible for transforming it. When adding new information to a database, there’s usually some differences in either the format of the file or its content which needs to be adjusted to properly synchronize with the rest of the information in the target database.

Kinds of ETL Tools

ETL tools are pretty straightforward but one variation of the extract, transform, and load process is ELT.

ELT — The ELT process differs in that users load the information into the database before they start the transformation phase. This change removes the staging system from the standard ETL process. The upside to this procedure is that it allows users to store raw data. The standard ETL process requires that all information and data be restructured prior to uploading. This is beneficial when a user doesn’t have time to clean information; they can still input their information into storage where it can be reviewed and modified later.

ETL Tools' Features

This category has many different platforms to choose from, all with slightly different offerings. However, most ETL tools have the following features.

Basic ETL functions — ETL tools must be able to extract data, transform it to fit the needs of the end user, and have the functionality to load data into a data warehouse.

Cloud-based — While some ETL tools are compatible with on-site systems, it’s essential they are able to integrate with cloud-based systems. Cloud-based systems have many advantages including seamless updates and the ability for users to easily collaborate across departments.

Connectors — Connectors are tools that allow various different software sources to integrate in one place. They act as a translator between software products so that software can be placed in a common format for easy integration. This is important as ETL tools need to transform data regardless of the source. This means that even with various origins, data should be convertible with the ETL software.

Visual designer — Almost all ETL tools integrate with a visual designer which is an application that allows users to utilize drag and drop functionality to design their system. This user-friendly interface enables users to design an ETL system with little to no coding.

Archive data — It’s essential that ETL tools backup data in the event that it needs to be restored. The data can also be easily stockpiled for future analysis. This is helpful for users that work with large amounts of data, as it can be easy to lose track of important data.

Record integration data — ETL tools must record integration data for every transaction. In the event that an audit needs to take place, it’s easier for users to pull the relevant data. Additionally, this helps identify when an issue was introduced to a system.
