Saving and Retrieval: I really appreciate how simple it is to capture and save code snippets from anywhere, whether that's my IDE, browser, or even the clipboard. The search and tagging system is quite effective, allowing me to quickly locate specific pieces of code when I need them. The automatic context capture when saving a snippet is especially valuable—it records the language, source, and relevant tags, so retrieving code I wrote months ago is almost effortless. I no longer have to waste time digging through old projects or Gists to find what I need.
Workflow Integration: The tool fits smoothly into my daily workflow. I use the IDE extensions, particularly for VS Code, and the integration is seamless. I can access my saved snippets, add new ones, and even share them without ever leaving the editor, which really cuts down on unnecessary context switching.
AI/Enrichment: The AI-powered descriptions and tagging are genuinely useful. The feature automatically generates clear, human-readable descriptions for even the most cryptic snippets, so I can quickly determine if a piece of code is what I'm looking for without having to read through the entire block.
Collaboration/Sharing: The sharing capabilities are excellent. Being able to generate a shareable link or markdown snippet on the fly makes it much easier to collaborate with teammates or discuss code during reviews and pair programming sessions. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
My primary concern with the application is its performance and resource usage. On my main development machine, I’ve noticed that the desktop client can sometimes be demanding on system resources, which results in noticeable lag when switching between the Pieces application and my IDE, particularly right after startup. While I find the UI visually appealing, I think the organizational structure could be improved for handling larger code bases with hundreds of snippets. I would value having more detailed options for grouping or a more advanced filtering system to help manage extensive libraries of saved code more effectively.
