The main thing I dislike about Tableau is that it takes some time to get comfortable with it. When I first started using it, some of the advanced features and calculations were a little confusing. I also feel that dashboards can become slow when I work with large amounts of data. Apart from this, I find Tableau quite useful for my regular reporting and analysis work. Microsoft Power BI is the best visualization tool that I have used so far. It enables the leadership team and senior managers to get the authentic vibe of the operations/business through the dynamic dashboard and graphical representation, which helps make decision-making at large. Domo solved our fragmented sales reporting problem. Key business metrics like quota attainment, run rates, new business performance, pipeline, and lease maturity used to live across multiple reports, systems, and personal spreadsheets, and gathering and validating it all took significant time. Quarterly Business Review prep alone took each sales manager 10-15 hours; that work is now largely eliminated because everything lives in one centralized, validated platform. The visualizations in Looker feel a little dated, as they have not kept up with the options provided by competitors for visualizing data. There is very little to no AI functionality out of the box, which feels like a miss. One downside is that troubleshooting can sometimes be difficult when a pipeline fails, as the error messages aren't always detailed enough and you may need to dig through multiple logs to find the root cause. The platform also has a lot of features, so it can take some time for new users to become comfortable with everything. While serverless is convenient, costs can increase if compute usage isn't monitored properly. Databricks has helped me and my team simplify our data engineering workflow by providing a single platform for data ingestion, transformation, governance, and analytics. There’s a bit of a mindset shift in how you approach analysis. Instead of building queries from scratch each time, you rely more on the pre-defined models and structures.

I'd still like to be able to offer more than 2 places after the decimal on more metrics (especially currency, where only having 2 places for something like CPV can frequently be completely irrelevant) but in general I'm very happy with AA. Honestly, there’s not much to dislike. If I had to mention anything, it’s that building out complex dashboards can be a bit involved at first, especially with lots of moving parts like paid and organic social. If I had to nitpick, the initial UI for the truly deep engineering stuff can be a little much for new users, but once you get past the initial setup (which is covered well by Customer Support and training), the daily use is very intuitive. ILUM solves a few major headaches that were common in the big data world. The main problem is fragmentation—trying to stitch together separate, expensive data lakes and data warehouses, which leads to messy data silos, inconsistent results, and a lot of unnecessary work. Older proprietary systems like Cloudera or Databricks are costly and lock you in. ILUM gets rid of those problems. It's an open-source based Data Lakehouse platform that unifies everything.

For me as a user, this translates to tangible benefits. First, it is much faster. The interactive Spark sessions eliminate those 20-40 second job start times, and processing can be up to twice as fast overall. This means I'm not waiting on the infrastructure; I'm actually doing my job. Second, it's cheaper and more efficient. The platform is zero-license, Kubernetes-native, and runs anywhere (cloud, on-prem, hybrid), which drastically cuts infrastructure costs—we talk about 60% savings for clients. That budget can go to actual development, not just licensing fees. Third, it provides clarity and governance with features like automated Data Lineage and a central Data Catalog, so I can trust the data's quality and know exactly where it's been. One thing I don’t like about Alteryx is that it can be expensive, especially for smaller teams. It also takes time to learn all of its more advanced features, and when workflows get large, they can sometimes become difficult to manage. I started off liking Tableau as a BI tool better than PowerBI.

Then, I could see the compute downsides and missing git repo in Tableau compared to Looker.

Then, I can see the issue that Looker is very expensive and that Looker is not dbt integrated, i.e. you constantly need to maintain two disconnected repos and make changes in two places.

While it handles standard SQL queries exceptionally well, it occasionally requires a bit of manual tweaking for highly customized schema logic or non-standard SQL dialects. BlazeSQL has eliminated the bottleneck of writing repetitive SQL queries for ad-hoc data requests. It bridge the gap between non-technical stakeholders and complex database structures, allowing our team to generate reports and extract data insights significantly faster. Sigma does require learning some new things. It is easy to crosswalk from other BI platforms, but does require a new way of learning things. Sigma is allowing us to get a unified view of our entire Snowflake data warehouse, while still allowing us to integrate with additional data sources (including CSVs). Some corners of the UI/UX still have room to improve. A few of the admin and settings screens feel denser than they need to be, and there’s a learning curve in places. That said, they’ve taken big, visible steps over the last year—a refreshed dashboard UI, themes, and a much cleaner AI chat experience—and the trajectory is clearly moving in the right direction.

We moved to Knowi from a well-known cloud BI platform. The previous tool required pushing all of our data into its own store before we could visualize anything, which meant ETL pipelines to maintain, sync lag, duplicate storage costs, and our NoSQL data getting flattened along the way.

With Knowi, we unified analytics across all of our datastores without moving the data and launched customer-facing embedded dashboards much faster. Row-level security and secure embeds ensure each customer sees only their own data. The semantic layer keeps metrics consistent across every surface. And with the new AI and agentic capabilities embedded in our product, customers can self-serve answers that used to come in as support tickets and custom report requests, so our team can spend its time on the product rather than on one-off reporting. One aspect I find challenging about SAS Viya is its tendency to be resource-intensive, often demanding substantial CPU, memory, and storage to operate efficiently, particularly in larger environments. The process of installation and upgrading can also be quite complicated, as it typically involves coordinating multiple services and dependencies. Furthermore, troubleshooting can be a lengthy process, since it sometimes requires in-depth knowledge of both SAS components and the underlying infrastructure. I also think that some users might perceive the interface and integration with third-party tools as less intuitive when compared to more modern, lightweight analytics platforms. Notebooks can quickly get messy once you start creating a lot of cells in the same notebook, and it’s easy to lose your place while scrolling to find the cell you’re looking for. I’m not fully convinced by this Notebook and App partitioning, because it feels clunky and confusing in practice. For example, when you’re working with tabs, it’s hard to tell in the Notebook which cells are associated with which tabs. I also found it strange that the order of cells shown in the App is different from the order in which they appear in the Notebook.
