Microsoft SQL Server is fast, intuitive database management tool which we usually use to store and extract the information as per business needs. It is very powerful and robust. Automatic backups, SQL Profiler, SSD Support, all-time availability, fast migration and disaster recovery etc. are only just a handful features out of large feature list. I believe the licensing is bit overpriced and more complex in recent editions of Microsoft SQL Server 2014. Although free version available provides most of the functionality, but for business, you definitely need a license to suffice the purpose. I dislike that every time I connect to a different database engine, it defaults to the "master" database, which is never the database I'm working on. The software often freezes. Code comparisons are a nightmare since ssis doesn't consistently order the package xml in the same way. Deploying packages is a nightmare if you create script tasks and need to deploy external libraries since it requires use of the GAC. Overall the software is slow and clunky. The development by Management Studio has become very easy and efficient for the versatility of this tool, i had no prior experience but I was able to jump right in.
