  ### 1. Easy to Use, but Outlook/Phone Sync and App Glitches Create Daily Friction

**What do you like best about CARET Legal?**

Interface is easy to use. Document generation is easy.

**What do you dislike about CARET Legal?**

- Does NOT have true Outlook integration -- only calendar entry titles sync, not the notes for the appointment; and only syncs with Legacy Outlook.. (No integration with calendar on your phone - you must use their App for everything.)
- Because it performs a two-way sync of calendar entries with Legacy Outlook, you must delete all users entries in their Outlook or else their personal calendar will be sucked into the Firm's calendar. 
- Does NOT sync contacts to Outlook at all. You must use your browser or the App, not native phone Contacts. That also means that text messages ahve no name because the name that matches the ph# is in the App, not in Contacts.  (No sync of contacts to your phone.)
- It will NOT support initiating an email in Outlook and linking it to a file later in 2026, when Microsoft discontinues support for the extension. So, you must use the Browser in CARET Legal to send any emails you want linked. 
- When making new appointments in CARET Legal, it does not set "notify" by default. If you forget to manually add a notification, you will get no reminder of your appointment. 
- Imported contacts into CARET - no direct support for the notes associated with a contact. They can import it to a custom text field, but note loses line feeds -- it becomes one continuous sentence. 
- Caret's contract is rigid; you can add an employee during the term, bur if you downsize, they will continue to charge the full amount for the year even if you are not using that license.
- iPhone app is glitchy.

**What problems is CARET Legal solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As many problems as Amicus Attorney had as an aging software product, I greatly regret the switch from it to CARET Legal. It turn out that CARET Legal is newer but is more limited, it's not as mature of a program. It has greatly harmed our workflow.

Here's where we stand on the issues you've raised.

As Microsoft moves away from COM add-ins, we're rebuilding toward a more modern web add-in experience rather than stepping back from it. The evolution is expected to resolve email linking.

Contact and note sync with Outlook is not part of our integration by design. Maintaining a clean system of record for contact data is important to us, and direct sync tends to work against that.

Natively created appointments don't carry a default reminder. If you're working with synced Outlook 365 events, you can set a default reminder today in User Settings under Calendar.

We continue to invest in the iPhone app and are always working to improve the experience for our customers.

Your note about contract flexibility is fair feedback, and we'll make sure it reaches the right people internally.

**What do you like best about CARET Legal?**

Caret Legal has been a game changer for our firm. From the moment we implemented it, we noticed a significant improvement in how efficiently we manage cases, billing, and client communication. The interface is clean and intuitive, making it easy for our entire team to get up to speed quickly without a steep learning curve.

One of the standout features is its seamless integration of case management and accounting tools. Having everything in one place has saved us countless hours and reduced the risk of errors. The billing system is especially impressive. It is customizable, accurate, and easy to use, which has helped us streamline invoicing .

Customer support has also been excellent. Whenever we’ve had questions or needed assistance, their team has been responsive, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful.

Overall, Caret Legal delivers exactly what modern law firms need: reliability, efficiency, and smart organization. It’s a powerful tool that has made a noticeable difference in our day to day operations, and I would highly recommend it to any firm looking to upgrade their legal practice management software.

**What do you dislike about CARET Legal?**

At times we have experienced a lag, especially when handling larger datasets or generating reports. It has impacted the calendar feature a few times, as well, causing us to re-enter events once the lag has been fixed. This has made routine operations more time-consuming than they should be.

It allows us to work hourly cases much easier and to bill our time accurately and efficiently. We now have a much better picture of how many hours are put into files and how quickly bills are being paid by vendors.

**What do you like best about CARET Legal?**

I love that I can add costs and have them automatically totaled on the main page for each matter. I can see all the fields in one place without having to dig through folders to find specific information, and I can also view the fees for the matter right there. Having everything together at a glance helps me share details quickly and efficiently when discussing a matter. The initial setup was pretty easy, too. We’re able to work on the same platform and send notes to each other about the calendar and files, which keeps everyone on the same page.

**What do you dislike about CARET Legal?**

I’d much rather talk to someone on the phone quickly instead of going back and forth over email. It has been really hard to get in contact with billing support. If there’s a billing issue and a ticket has already been seen, please contact the person (me) directly.

I find that CARET Legal helps me stay on top of emails and documents. It shows all the fields at a glance, which makes it quick and efficient to find the information I need. I also love that I can add costs and have them automatically summed up within the matter without any extra effort.

I use CARET Legal for my work as a paralegal, and I find it easy to use. It organizes all information efficiently in one matter, which I really appreciate. This software is a time-saver because it cuts down on time spent looking for information in different places. It allows me to speak to clients with all the information at my fingertips. I'd recommend it highly, and I especially like that it gives me access to all necessary information in one place.

**What do you like best about CARET Legal?**

CARET Support is very efficient and quick with their responses. Any issues I have had, they typically have resolved within hours, even the most seemingly complex ones. I feel more confident in the software knowing that the support team has our back.  I also really like that it is cloud based, making it easy to access on my phone or any other device with an internet connection.

**What do you dislike about CARET Legal?**

I regret that there isn't a function to send phone messages specifically. We use the Phone Calls and then Tasks system, which is their answer to that function, and it has served us well, but it isn't exactly the same as other software we have used. You do still have the capability of marking tasks complete similar to marking off a phone message as returned or dealt with, so this complaint is not really an issue. And, as an upside to the Task function, you can coordinate between the person assigned and the task giver with notes or updates on the task itself. In that sense, one could say that the Task function is superior to Phone Messages.

**What problems is CARET Legal solving and how is that benefiting you?**

CARET Legal has done a lot to refine both it's billing function and Email since we began using it, and they seem to really be taking our suggestions and critiques to heart. They have already implemented several things we have suggested, and that has streamlined it's functionality for us immensely. I will gladly rave about a company or product that is willing to continue improving and evolving so that it can be of better use to its clients, and CARET is certainly that.

**What do you like best about CARET Legal?**

We made the switch to Caret Legal in April of 2024 after considering multiple cloud-based systems that could provide a smooth migration from our previous, older platform, minimize downtime, and provide a fully integrated accounting system for our firm. The onboarding teams guided us through the platform every step of the way, making sure we understood every workflow and could adapt the system to firm our needs. The flexibility to customize parts of the platform according to our preferences and procedures has been of great help and has streamlined our daily operations and enhanced efficiency. 

I personally use Caret Legal every day for hours, and the system consistently performs well overall. Once of the things I like most about the system is the build-in accounting system. This feature has helped us save time, minimize mistakes, and centralize our financial management. We also appreciate the integrations with Outlook, Word, and Adobe, being able to transition between these programs without worrying about lost files or workflow interruptions has helped boost our productivity. 

The platform is user-friendly and is easy for staff to navigate. Caret's training platforms have been particularly helpful. We've appreciated the built-in training available within the system as well as the access to training videos and lessons. The reliability of Caret is another strong point. We rarely experience downtime and if we do, it's handled quickly and communication is excellent. Out dedicated account representative has been outstanding, and is always responsive and proactive, making addressing concerns easy. Having a direct line to a reliable account representative has been a game changer for us and makes us feel supported and heard when we have questions or concerns.

**What do you dislike about CARET Legal?**

Caret has been strong overall, but there are a few aspects that could use some improvements. Particularly, the internal email system is not something our staff finds beneficial due to its simplicity. However, we choose to use the Outlook integration and find it to be adequate for our needs, so the simplicity of the email system is not a major concern for us. The Adobe plugin is also an area that could use slight improvements. While it functions well overall and helps make our document management smooth, the 20 MB file size limit before requiring a download of the document can be frustrating when working with larger items like exhibits.

Our only other concern with Caret Legal to this point has been the general support team. Our dedicated account representative has been excellent, but the general support team available through phone or email doesn't seem to have a great working knowledge of specific details of the system creating longer wait times for responses as tickets are escalated to more experienced reps. While these are concerns for us, they are relatively minor but may be bigger concurs to others.

**What problems is CARET Legal solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Caret Legal addressed several issues for our firm by making our workflows more efficient in a cloud-based platform. Before using Caret Legal, we managed case files, documents, emails and accounting through multiple systems which was time consuming and created more instances for errors. We've found that Caret Legal's combination of these systems has streamlined our processes, made our team more efficient, and allowed for our team to work remotely more efficiently whether that be from home or traveling. Time tracking is another major concern for most law firms and Caret Legal has improved our time tracking processes greatly. The variety of ways to track time, through tickets, emails, timers, etc. has been extremely helpful to everyone allowing us to guarantee that all billable time is being accounted for.

**What do you like best about CARET Legal?**

The client management side of things is great. Being able to link matters when doing specific tasks is great. Caret Payments has been a nice addition to taking credit card payments. The tasks help us to stay on top of things that are several months out.

**What do you dislike about CARET Legal?**

There are somewhat frequent server issues that make Caret slow or occasionally the servers are just out. (usually not for very long, but the interuption to business is difficult). We have recently had an issue where the contact cards for our clients are getting deleted. Frustrating/ looks bad to input all client information at check in and then having to re-request all the information again from them during our meeting.

**What problems is CARET Legal solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It is helping us track our cases and create a good workflow from first client meeting the final payment. Interoffice communication and communication with clients has been improved by carets memo/billing functions.

Very user friendly I have been in the legal field for over 15 years  I am new to this firm and have not used Caret at any of my previous firms. It was a quick easy learning process. The time tab makes it very easy to manages.

I have yet to find a feature I dislike. So far everything has been very efficient.

Tracking billable time was my biggest challenge becoming dependent on the timer feature has been a life saver.

I like CARET Legal because it's the one place that holds all the information on my client, which really helps me do my work like preparing documents. I appreciate that I don't need to go to other software since CARET Legal holds all the client documents.

When I download documents that have long names, CARET Legal will download them but into different folders.

Your description of how document downloads work is by design. For filenames that are too long - we put them in a different folder but we do import them. When you use the Matter-Documents Download Entire Matter or Download Current Subfolder, there is a 158 character limit for the full document name. The full document name includes the characters in Matter Number + all folders and sub-folders + the document name. If any files exceed the 158 character limit, you will see a folder in the zip file called "Folder character count exceeded". This will include all files that exceed the 158 character limit in any folder.

**What do you like best about CARET Legal?**

As the office manager of a busy family law practice, I’ve been really impressed with how much easier Caret Legal has made my job. It keeps everything — cases, billing, calendars, and documents — organized and accessible in one platform. The system is intuitive, and even team members who aren’t very tech-savvy picked it up quickly.

The time tracking and task management tools help keep our attorneys accountable and our cases on schedule. I also really appreciate the integrations with Outlook and QuickBooks, which make communication and accounting much smoother.

What stands out most is the support we receive from our Customer Success Manager. They’ve been proactive, responsive, and genuinely invested in helping our firm get the most out of Caret Legal.

Caret Legal has streamlined our operations, improved team collaboration, and saved us countless hours of admin work. I highly recommend it to any law firm looking to simplify office management and stay organized.

**What do you dislike about CARET Legal?**

While our experience with Caret Legal has been overwhelmingly positive, there are a couple of areas where it could improve. The Outlook integration can be a bit inconsistent at times, which occasionally causes delays in syncing emails and calendar events. Additionally, the platform’s reporting features are somewhat limited — we would like more flexibility and customization options to generate detailed reports for cases, billing, and staff performance.

Despite these minor drawbacks, Caret Legal remains an invaluable tool for our firm, and we hope future updates will address these areas.

**What problems is CARET Legal solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Caret Legal has solved several key challenges for our firm. Before using the platform, managing cases, billing, scheduling, and client communications required juggling multiple tools, which was time-consuming and prone to errors. Caret Legal centralizes all of these functions, allowing us to track cases, manage tasks, and organize documents in one place.

It is very easy to use and the accuracy of this program is much better than their predecessor.

The customer service is a bit of a headache--you starft out opening an issue with their bot, and then wait for responses.  If you have immediate concerns it can sometimes take a bit to get assistance--their go to is with videos and articles.

I find CARET Legal straightforward to use, which significantly enhances my ability to manage and organize legal matters effectively. It wasn't until our account manager got involved that any progress was made. Additionally, I feel misled by the upselling of the new Caret Analytics feature, which was not as advertised upon upgrade, leading to dissatisfaction.

I really like the seamless workflow in CARET Legal that extends from time tracking to prebilling and then to finalized billing. This process cuts down on manual administrative work, which had been a considerable burden before. The customer service team is consistently prompt and efficient in their responses, and I’ve observed that they frequently update the program based on client feedback.

We have noticed one drawback, which occurs infrequently: since this is an internet cloud-based platform, there can be some latency when the internet is experiencing problems. However, these issues are typically resolved within an hour or so.

Transitioning to CARET Legal was initially daunting, but in retrospect, the setup process turned out to be manageable and straightforward. I experience several issues with the invoicing system in CARET Legal, including bugs and difficulties in editing split billing invoices, which sometimes allow me to adjust entries and other times do not. Additionally, the L codes do not always appear when editing invoices. I find the accounting tools lacking compared to QuickBooks, and I miss having a comprehensive report that includes remittance information for vendor bills. Moreover, customer support can be unresponsive at times, necessitating multiple emails or calls for assistance. I also think the document saving and organizational structure could use improvement.

I do not like that you can only go in one matter at a time so therefore I will use it on several different browsers at once. I also do not like that emails do not have flags for urgency and do not auto correct spelling for the first letter of a word in a sentence to be capitalized.  I do not like that Caret does not synch with Outlook for PEOPLE.   I also miss the expansion of text from Amicus that Caret does not have.

The Migration team, the Trainers, and Support are all great to work with. Our implementation went well.  Any time there was a problem, the Migration team was already on it and provided the fix/solution or a work around until a fix can be implemented.  Once you start using Caret Legal, it is easy to use.

Customer support is non existent.  To add a new user takes at least 3 weeks and 14 emails.  They also surprise you with price increases.  They charge annually and go right for your credit card without a quote.  The task list has the same bugs that it had 7 years ago when I started with it.  You to refresh it to see what is actually on it, each time.  No longer worth the money.

It solves the case management issue, but not quite as well as it used to.  Oh yeah, when I asked for back up of my data, I got a very hard time from them and then only received 1 back up.

I did not find anything useful about CARET.  Some of their instructers were very sincere and worked to be helpful, but the migration team never got my data properly set for use.

**What do you dislike about CARET Legal?**

I am a sole practioner.  So - very small law office.  CARET charged me $2,500 to migrate my data because they said my data was "complicated" (20 yrs of PC Law).  After 2 months, my data was still not fully migrated; what was migrated was corrupted (wrong A and L codes - why would they change?), and while I made clear LEDES billing and LSS billing were CRITICAL, after 2 months CARET still had not properly formatted my billing.  CARET refuses to refund my money.  I don't know how any other law firm manages - perhaps CARET caters to large firm.  I had a completely frustrating experience.

CARET is not solving the migration problems they caused; and CARET is not refunding my "complicated" upgraded pricing.

Having the ability to do not just case management and billing, but complete firm accounting/reconciliation is a godsend. The integrated CRM in the Enterprise Plus tier is fantastic - no need to have an outside CRM that may or may not fully integrate with your CMS. The email feature is the clencher - having an actual, FULL email inbox that syncs with Gsuite email makes keeping case-related correspondence a snap.

I love all the reports that are available.  To be able to look at the dashboard and get a feel for how the firm is doing has been invailuable.  I don't know how it compares to competitors.

**What do you dislike about CARET Legal?**

CARET/Zola is very glitchy. I find that there are a lot of redunancies with in the system and every time I turn around I have to have a work around -- which is NOT efficient.  I also need to be able to send people a link to pay their intitial retainer, same as is available with the operating account.  We have huge issues with our contacts and there is no simple way to fix it -- which is very frustrating.

**What problems is CARET Legal solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The accounting/productivity reports have helped us drive our firm by using metrics to measure our efficiencies and challenges. The CRM effectiviely helps us manage our potentials more effectively.

Caret prepolutated my response about what I like best.  They say: "My favorite feature of Zola is its cloud-based design.  I can log in from anywhere at any time, and have access to everything I need."

**What do you dislike about CARET Legal?**

One of the reasons I chose Zola/Caret was for the accounting.  I have not been able to access the feature, which I have been using since 2019, since there seems to be a glitch with PLAID and my bank.  I have been unable to reconcile my accounts with "download and review" since May.  This means it takes me several additional hours per month.  As a solo practicitioner, I do not have that kind of time to spare.

I have been reaching out to Caret since the beginning of June.  Their last response suggeseted I needed a new bank (which I have been with since 2006), which was neither encouraging or productive.  How am I to know this issue won't happen with a new bank?  Followup communication only occurs when I reach out for more information.

**Recommendations to others considering CARET Legal:**

Try it out, and I think you will be happy.  I love that it is so easy to get ahold of customer service.  They will walk you through everything, and you'll never feel alone.

**What problems is CARET Legal solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Zola has streamlined everything.  Document automation has saved so much time.  Integration with LawPay has decreased outstanding invoices.  I just need to log in to one place.  Time is money.  However, if the issue with PLAID is not resolved, then I am no longer saving time.

It allows me to place all of my documents into one system, which is easily retreived and reviewed from any computer.  I am able to save and access my documents form anywhere.  The ability to create Matter files and subfiles allows me to more narrowly refine my documents within the system, and then find them more readily.

**What do you dislike about CARET Legal?**

The billing software is difficult until you have done it a few times.  And, you can't see the invoice in the form the client sees it unless you print it out upon finalization.  Otherwise, it is a good system.

It is solving the issue of document management, document access, and document storage.  It is a safe and secure way to retain your documents and allows your clients to access those documents readily.

Easy to use interface with robust capabilities. Zola is friendly to everyone from our most luddite attorney to our most tech savy paralegal - in vastly different ways. It works great for everyone, suits their individual needs, and helps our practice run more efficiently. I especially like the portability and ease of using the platform on my cell or laptop.

I am still hoping that they will offer a plugin to save documents directly from word to Zola on my Mac. I know this capability is offered for PCs, but I would love to see it on my Macs. Would like to see Open.AI integration and the ability to query my matter docs with natural language.

It's a great practice management system. We have been very happy with and are excited to continue growing together.
