What do you like best about Insightful?

We've been using Insightful for our remote and hybrid teams, and it's been a great addition to our operations. The platform is intuitive, reliable, and gives us clear visibility into productivity trends without being invasive. The time tracking and idle time features help ensure accuracy and accountability while still respecting employee autonomy.

From an administrative perspective, setup was straightforward, and the dashboard makes it easy to manage teams and generate reports. It's also one of the most competitively priced solutions on the market—offering excellent value without compromising on features.

What do you dislike about Insightful?

I rarely write reviews, but my experience with Insightful (formerly Workpuls) demands a public warning to every business owner who is considering this app for employee time tracking.

❗ The Problem: You Will Overpay Employees for Time They Didn't Work

The biggest and most dangerous issue with Insightful is how it treats scheduled shifts. If you assign a scheduled shift (say, 8am to 4pm), and your employee clocks out for lunch, Insightful doesn't end the shift or subtract the time they were off the clock.

Instead, the system continues counting that time as “idle” — but still within the shift, meaning it is included as work time in reports. In other words, your employee could be completely clocked out, and you could still be paying them as if they were working, based on Insightful's reports.

This is not just a bug — this is a system design choice that can quietly cheat you out of hundreds or thousands of dollars over time.

🧩 Customer Support's Explanation Makes It Worse

When I contacted customer support about this obvious flaw, they told me my employee should use the “break” button in the app rather than clock out.

But here's the catch:

That option wasn’t even visible or available in my employee's app.

The default behavior — what any normal person would expect — is that clocking out stops the work timer. Not with Insightful.

Instead of acknowledging the issue or fixing it, support said they’d “pass it along to the development team” and defended the system’s current behavior.

💰 They Refused a Refund

When I pointed out that the software misrepresented work hours and caused potential financial losses, I asked for a refund of the fees I paid. Their answer? No. No apology. No accountability. Just a polite brush-off.

🐛 Oh, and It’s Buggy Too

In addition to the core issue of misleading time tracking, the app itself is buggy. The interface can be inconsistent across devices, and expected features don’t always show up (like the missing break button). This leads to a poor user experience, both for admins and employees.

⚠️ Final Verdict: Avoid at All Costs

If you’re a business owner trying to track time accurately, Insightful is not just ineffective — it’s dangerous. It misrepresents work time, inflates hours, and exposes you to unnecessary payroll liability.

The very foundation of a time tracking app should be accuracy and trust. Insightful fails miserably on both counts.

I have canceled my account and am actively exploring alternatives with accurate time reporting and transparent break handling.

Don’t learn the hard way like I did. Stay far away from Insightful. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, and we're truly sorry to hear that Insightful didn’t meet your expectations.

We’d like to clarify that our shift scheduling feature was designed to help businesses compare scheduled hours with their actual work — whether employees started early or late, worked overtime, undertime, or had larger periods of inactivity. This gives our customers more visibility into how closely scheduled time aligns with productive time.

Many of our customers, especially those using Insightful for payroll purposes, base their compensation on Productive Time or Utilization %, rather than scheduled hours. This allows for a more performance-based approach to payroll.

Regarding breaks, we understand your concern. In order for the Break feature to be used properly, the employee must have the necessary permission enabled in their settings, and then double-click the Break button. We acknowledge that this workflow may not be intuitive for all teams and are actively working on ways to make it more seamless and visible across all devices.

As for the refund request — we genuinely regret that you felt disappointed. While we’re unable to issue refunds for the full period of past usage, we’d be happy to explore together how Insightful can better support your needs. If you’re open to it, we’d like to jump on a call and discuss how Insightful can be utilized for your needs and allow a certain period of free POC so you can take full advantage of the platform’s features and see if a tailored setup works better for your team.
