There are new versions every year, which is reassuring. We've been using AMember for 10 years. At the time, it was the only subscription software that worked with Joomla, so we had to go with it, and they haven't disappeared like so many web developers who make plugins. It's also inexpensive, which is both good and bad. We WISH it cost more so it could be a higher-end product, if that makes sense. But it has evolved, I have to say, and it has become more sophisticated. We use a lot of integrations: Stripe and PayPal for payments. Google Analytics for ecommerce tracking. ActiveCampaign so that we can have a Members-only newsletter. Their documentation is a little bare, but the fact that these integrations actually went smoothly was a pleasant surprise. The back-end doesn't look too bad, either - it's easy to navigate, and I prefer the simple look to something full of distractions. It's web software, we don't expect flashy interface behind the scenes. If you're using Joomla, though, it still may be the only choice available to you. **What do you dislike about aMember Pro?** 1) You can't customize the order and checkout pages. They are bare bones and look like basic HTML, which I guess is fine once they get to the payment stage. You don't need an order form to be flashy, especially for a fiction journal. Still, there are things we would have liked to include on this page (links to help, privacy statement, etc) that we simply cannot do because it would mean altering the template, and we're not programmers. 2) This is the big huge one, the reason we would have switched if there wasn't any other membership software that worked with Joomla. You can't ADD ON to an existing subscription manually. Every year, we have a 50% off subscriptions sale (we're an online fiction magazine). So, we create a coupon for this, which is easy to do. But CURRENT subscribers have no way of adding on this extra year at 50% off to their subscription. Instead, if they use the coupon, AMember takes out a SECOND account and they get *double billed.* This has caused us headaches in the past, and we simply disallow use of the coupon if someone has a current subscription. But we'd love for the software to just be able to extend the subscription. So, if someone was subbed for 3 months, they could ADD ON and subscribe for 15 months. 3) There's no spam-registration filtering. So obvious fake accounts with repetitive names like "TireMuscle TireMuscle" still count as 'registrations' even though they're under Pending members (people who haven't confirmed.) **Recommendations to others considering aMember Pro:** If you need basic subscription management software that works with Joomla and has a record of being around for more than 10 years, this will be fine. If you need advanced features, though, you may want to consider what else is available. **What problems is aMember Pro solving and how is that benefiting you?** Well, we're solving the problem of running a paid fiction journal. It generates usernames and passwords and keeps track of payment status. We've set up 4 'products,' one each for 1, 3, 6, and 12 month subscriptions, and people just select their subscription period. It works with Stripe for credit cards and PayPal. We can keep track of things like how much a person has spent total, look at their payment history, generate receipts and recurring notices (for example 'your account will renew in 3 days' which is legally required in our state.) It works well, I just wish it had a few key features that would help us a lot. ### 2. There are a lot of integrations, especially payment systems, that give folks from all different countries the opportunity to use this platform. They put out updates regularly, and the code is very well written. Email support is quick to respond, generally. **What do you dislike about aMember Pro?** The worst part about this platform is its lack of documentation. You can learn almost everything you need to know to run this system yourself in the matter for a few hours, but the documentation they do have was mostly written for older versions, is incomplete, and in broken English. The best support content was actually made by other users. The only support they have is email based, and depending on where you are located, it may take 12 to 24 hours for a response. I've also noticed a huge change in their approach to fixes and small customizations over the past 4 years, to the point that now they tend to want to charge you for nearly any customization, even if it should be a standard feature. **What problems is aMember Pro solving and how is that benefiting you?** Selling online training webinars on a few sites, and managing a subscription based system and live-event on another. ### 3. Very versatile with different payment options depending on what my client already has (Paypal, Stripe, Authorize.net etc). Membership program was very easy to set up with the different codes or groups. I love that is already has a built in affiliate program so you don't have to buy a different extension to help push sales. It's a great way to convert customers to affiliates. **What do you dislike about aMember Pro?** Price is a little higher than some of the others, but the out of box functionality is awesome. You get what you pay for. **Recommendations to others considering aMember Pro:** I would suggest to make a list of all of the things that you are looking for in a product like this. 9 times out of 10 this product will be perfect for what you will need. Even if you don't use some of the functionality, you might want it later, so being able to add it helps with future integrations. You won't be disappointed. **What problems is aMember Pro solving and how is that benefiting you?** Solving different pricing for specific content for groups that sign up.
