Not really a major issue, but there isn’t an option to have the canvas "pop out" into a separate window. You’re confined to working within the program. What takes me the longest time is when I receive a dwg and then need to use it as an x ref, having control of editing the layers and then the layers within the block can take time which seems like a waste. Maybe the way we edit block layers can be done quicker or better, maybe a full set layer that really changes everything set within the block to my chosen layer. The main thing i find challenging in NX is that some commands can feel overwhelming for new users.

Designcenter NX helps me create accurate designs, manage assemblies properly and generate clean drawings without spending unnecessary time.

Large assemblies can slow things down at times and I've also experienced the software crashing. When you're new to Solid Edge, some of the more advanced features take a while to figure out, so there's definitely a learning curve. It helped us cut down the time we spend on repetitive design tasks and the constant back and forth on revisions. We can update models more fastest, reuse standard parts, prepare drawings and share without having to bounce between a bunch of different tools all the time. It took me a bit of time to get comfortable with some of the advanced tools like Smart Select and IFC Import, especially coming from a different CAD workflow. I’ve also run into occasional crashes or slowdowns on larger, more complex drawings. Some AutoCAD files particularly ones with certain plugins, custom fonts, or advanced blocks don’t always render perfectly, so I sometimes have to manually fix things. One of the biggest improvements for me is Smart Mouse and Smart Select. Earlier, I had to keep navigating through manually selecting objects one by one, especially when working on complex drawings. Now I can use quick gestures and intelligent selection options, which makes repetitive editing much faster and keeps my workflow moving.

Another feature I rely on is Smart Plotting. When I have multiple drawing sheets ready for release, I no longer need to print each one individually. Batch plotting saves a significant amount of time and reduces the chance of missing a sheet or using the wrong print settings.

IFC Import has also been valuable since I regularly receive files from teams using Revit. Earlier, exchanging data often required extra conversion steps. One area that could be improved is performance when working with very large assemblies or complex models. As the number of components, configurations, and detailed features grows, loading, rebuilding, and editing can sometimes slow down and feel less responsive.

I’d also like to see continued progress on large-assembly performance overall, along with faster file handling and more seamless collaboration and cloud-based workflows. SOLIDWORKS helps me tackle design iteration, assembly coordination, and manufacturing documentation challenges. For example, when I was redesigning a conveyor Pull Cord Switch, I used parametric modelling and assemblies to quickly try out design changes and then update the drawings accordingly. When you assign a material to a design—let’s say wood—the model should better adopt that material’s texture and color. That would go a long way toward enhancing visualization in the early stages of the design process.

First is the collaboration aspect, where everyone can access the design wherever they are and make changes as needed.

Another benefit is design sharing without the risk of copying or downloading. By simply sharing a link with clients, they can view the design even on low-cost gadgets like tablets and phones.

Coohom helps solve the challenge of communicating design ideas to clients. Instead of relying on 2D drawings or trying to explain concepts verbally, I can show clients realistic 3D renderings of their future home. It is much lighter than AutoCAD. I used the Student version and found it helpful. Later, I got to know that the pricing of GstarCAD is much lower than that of AutoCAD. In the future, if I need to use it as a commercial version, I will definitely prefer GstarCAD because it is economical and provides the same features as AutoCAD. I am a high school teacher, and one of my subjects is digital fabrication. I introduced my students to this fantastic software during the course, and after a couple of trial and error processes, they can design and print 3D models and use their designs to laser cut. The main thing I dislike is that some features and workflows are not as smooth as they could be compared with more mature CAD platforms. Performance can also become noticeable when working with large or complicated drawings. Some commands and settings take a little time to get used to, especially when switching from another CAD system.

DraftSight mainly solves the need for a practical 2D CAD tool for creating, editing, and reviewing DWG drawings. It helps me work with existing DWG files without having to completely change my workflow or spend a lot of time learning a new system.

It is useful for day-to-day drafting, drawing modifications, documentation, and sharing drawings with customers and other teams. The biggest benefit for me is that it keeps the 2D CAD work relatively simple and familiar, while still providing the tools needed for regular engineering and drafting requirements and getting good support. The major factor is the 'bug splat". Despite its versions and performance have upgraded tremendously over the years, SketchUp is still prone to crashes when models become overly heavy with un-purged components.. Also, complex geometry cannot be easily created without third-party plugins. It can natively read and write a vast number of file formats, including DWG, point clouds, reality meshes, and GIS data (like Esri File Geodatabase), often without requiring a lossy conversion. Some things that could be improved include change management. It would be useful to have a snapshot in time of the first initial revision of a design and then be able to compare new revisions, like rev one or rev two, with revisions stored in the database. Currently, all you can see is the live data, and you can't see previous revisions that were issued. There is also a learning curve; the initial setup can be complicated, though we have good knowledge in-house. Copying setups from one purchase to another could be made easier.
