Flexible Data Ingestion and Custom Rules, Backed by a True Partnership **Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Stephanie M. | Asst Vice President, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** April 24, 2026 **What do you like best about Unit21?** Unit21’s flexible data ingestion, the ability to build custom rules, and the support from our CSM and the Unit21 Development team are all reasons I’ve been very happy with our decision to partner with Unit21. Before, we were using a more rigid system, which was not meeting our need for a real-time, adaptive solution. With Unit21, as long as we have the data fields mapped into the platform, we can build a rule specifically targets what we are trying to prevent. The options for rule validation, shadow mode, and rule replication are all great tools we use to iterate on the exact detection logic we need. Our team has really learned how to leverage that, and we've seen a lot of growth as they've become empowered to try building rules in response to new trends. I also love that our feedback has been taken into consideration in improving the platform; we have been able to influence the development of a comprehensive loss tracking module that meets all our tracking and reporting needs. There have been multiple examples where we've seen changes made to the platform as a direct result of our suggestions. It feels like a true partnership. **What do you dislike about Unit21?** The blessing of Unit21 is it's flexibility in ingesting our data and allowing custom rule-building, but that also means we have to know our data extremely well and build some things from the ground up. We have overcome these challenges with great CSM and Developer support. Our data can be our own worst enemy if we don't get our mapping right! We have learned a lot about our own internal transaction coding throughout the process of importing data from our core. Unit21 doesn't prescribe what fields we import. Once we identified the core fields needed, then it was a longer process of determining what additional custom fields we needed pull in. We still occasionally come across a new field or two that we want to start ingesting. It's been a process with many iterations, but it has been worth it to be able to design a dataset that is custom to our needs. Also, it can be daunting to build a whole new set of fraud rules. However, we started slow, targeting our biggest need at the time - account takeovers followed by unauthorized external transfers. By focusing on our biggest pain points, we were able to see immediate improvements in alerting capabilities and stopping those losses. From there, it was a matter of continuing to target the next biggest threat, the newest trend. This continues today, but it was a skill we needed to build up and get comfortable with. **What problems is Unit21 solving and how is that benefiting you?** We came in with some very real pain points: high alert volumes, too many false positives, and a previous system that simply couldn’t keep up with the fraud patterns we were seeing, especially account takeover and ACH fraud. Unit21 has helped us address those issues directly. Our account takeover rule, built around detecting when new external accounts and transfers are set up, has become our single most effective tool for catching that type of fraud. We’ve also made significant progress on ACH fraud, FedNow payments, and check fraud by building targeted, customized rules. The result has been a meaningful year-over-year reduction in fraud losses, which has given us the confidence to keep opening the door to new members without taking on excessive downstream risk. Unit21’s real-time and dynamic rule building options and near-real-time data ingestion have also strengthened our fraud prevention. Many of our alerts are now generated in near-real time throughout the day instead of arriving in an overnight batch file. That means our team can get to compromised accounts and suspicious activity faster, limiting how much damage a fraudster can do once an account is compromised. It’s made a noticeable difference in how we operate day to day. ### 2. The team is also highly responsive and consistently available when we need support. **What do you dislike about Unit21?** Haven't experienced any setbacks from a user point of view. **What problems is Unit21 solving and how is that benefiting you?** Before adopting Unit21, we struggled with effectively monitoring and isolating alerts. Our RFI queue, for example, wasn’t functioning as intended and failed to properly isolate alerts, leading to inefficiencies. Unit21 helped us resolve those issues by enabling us to reconfigure the RFI queue to function more like a case queue, significantly improving our workflow. Rule-building is another area where we’ve seen major benefits. In the past, creating effective, manageable business rules was a challenge. Unit21 has made that process much more intuitive, and their team has been instrumental in helping us refine our rules. While we’re still working on optimizing certain aspects—like enhancing the AI agent to generate more actionable insights—the system has already saved us time by automating parts of our workflow and reducing manual effort. It’s not perfect yet, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction. ### 3. Very few vendors could accommodate our desire to combine Core Bank and FinTech into a single monitoring environment, so Unit21 doing this was huge for us. Additionally, I appreciate the level of customization with rules and capabilities that go well beyond what most vendors offer. **What do you dislike about Unit21?** CTR workflows are more manual than we expected, and this has doubled our time spent on CTR filing. We're also exploring how to integrate more data into Unit21, like IP information and external blockchain analytics, to further enhance our risk assessments. Interface is very challenging to make use friendly. Although it is good I feel it could be better with less noise or some tweaks. **What problems is Unit21 solving and how is that benefiting you?** Unit21 is now working with FINTRAC in Canada which will allow us to submit STR's through Unit21 instead of the FINTRAC system. This saves our compliance time a lot of time and energy in regards to Canadian cases. Even for a company who does not do a lot of STR filings the fact they integrated us so fast was a life saver. ### 8.
