## PaperTrail Reviews
  ### 1. Effortless Log Management with Room for Improvement

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ndidi N. | Network Security Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 28, 2026

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

I use PaperTrail for log aggregation and monitoring, and it's great because I can collect logs from multiple sources and search through them quickly when troubleshooting issues. I love the live tail feature for real-time log streaming during incident response. The simplicity of setup is its biggest strength; you can start shipping logs within minutes. The search functionality is fast and intuitive, making it easy to find specific log entries across multiple sources without complex query syntax. The live tail feature is brilliant for real-time troubleshooting, especially during incident response when you need to see what's happening as it unfolds. It's honestly one of the simplest setup experiences I have had with a log management tool, and the documentation is clear and well-structured.

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

The log retention limits on lower-tier plans can be restrictive, especially in high-volume environments, where older logs get archived or dropped sooner than desired. It would be great to see better integration options with third-party security and monitoring tools. Native connectors to platforms like Jira or Slack for automated incident creation from log alerts would streamline workflows.

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use PaperTrail for log aggregation and monitoring, allowing quick search and real-time streaming, which helps troubleshoot issues. It provides easy access to logs from multiple sources without the complexity of a full SIEM.

  ### 2. Lightweight, Powerful Log Management with Real-Time Streaming and Fast Setup

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Oil & Energy | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 02, 2026

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

The best aspect is that its lightweight platform is a powerful log management solution, which has real-time log streaming. Papertrail also makes the accesing easier to aggregate logs from the servers, applications, and infrastructure into one place, and can also be an instant search. Their live tail features are specifically useful for debugging issues as they get to occur, their setup is also very quick at the initial stage.

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

This platform is good for log management, but it lacks deeper analytics and advanced observability features like APM and is not specifically designed for a detailed dashboard, which is provided in a similar space. For larger-scale environments, users might need some additional tools for metrics and performance monitoring alongside.

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Papertrail solves the problem of fragmented, hard-to-access logs, instead of checking multiple servers or individual systems. It centralises logs in one place, which is helpful to access and share quickly and easily. It also helps is to quickly trace errors and monitor system behaviour, and also to responds to incidents in real time.

  ### 3. Fast Printing with User-Friendly Interface

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

I like how quick the mailing is and that PaperTrail prints pretty fast, even for documents with a lot of pages or assets. I'm also impressed with the transparency and privacy on printed documents. The tool is user-friendly, and anyone can easily use it after a few tries. It saves a lot of time by doing what you want right away without extra steps. I also appreciate the very easy and basic setup, and that support is available 24/7.

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

File upload or formatting are hit or miss. Sometimes when documents are uploaded incorrectly, it will not print properly leading to bleed or fields not aligned properly.

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use PaperTrail for printing and mailing, which is quick and efficient, saving a lot of time. It also provides documentation, transparency, and privacy for printed documents.

  ### 4. Effortless Log Management with Real-Time Insights

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Merna A. | AR and collection specialist, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 18, 2026

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

I find the ability to see logs live as events happen extremely valuable, as it helps me detect issues immediately. Saved searches let me quickly access frequently used queries. I can filter logs by time range, source, app, service, and severity, which is quite handy. The log tailing feature is fantastic because you can quickly spot errors the moment they appear instead of waiting for reports. I also appreciate alerts based on patterns, which enhance my use of PaperTrail.

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

Harder to analyze long-term patterns compared to more advanced observable tools.

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

PaperTrail centralizes all logs, making them easy to search and analyze. I value the ability to see logs live, helping me detect issues immediately. Saved searches, filters, log tailing, and alerts based on patterns enhance my workflow by allowing quick access to queries and error spotting.

  ### 5. Blazing-Fast Searches, Minimal Setup

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kylie G.

**Reviewed Date:** February 07, 2026

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

I love using SolarWinds PaperTrail as a cloud-native, all-in-one log management and real-time monitoring solution. It acts as my central tool for managing log data from my entire tech stack, including cloud and on-prem servers, applications, network devices, databases, and third-party cloud services like Heroku and AWS. PaperTrail unifies all log types into a single, searchable interface, making it much easier to troubleshoot and monitor system health compared to fragmented tools. I appreciate its blazing-fast, intuitive search and live tail logging, which I consider the ultimate troubleshooting superpower. The search functionality is instant, even with weeks of log data, and doesn't require complex query languages. I enjoy the zero infrastructure overhead and effortless cross-stack log aggregation. The initial setup is another big strength, designed for speed and simplicity with no need for DevOps expertise or complex configurations. I also value how quickly PaperTrail provides solutions for quick bug fixes and complex incident investigations.

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

I get frustrated with the lack of custom dashboards in PaperTrail. I can't combine log metrics with other operational data into a single view, which is really important for tracking overall system health. I also feel limited because there's no native aggregate analysis. I have to export data to Excel or a BI tool for trend analysis. Another issue is that PaperTrail doesn't natively parse structured log data, so I have to rely on keyword searches or external parsers. These areas could really use improvement.

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use PaperTrail to centralize, analyze, and act on log data quickly. It eliminates siloed log data, speeds up incident response, and offers intuitive search and live tail logging. It requires minimal setup and zero infrastructure management, making it essential for troubleshooting and monitoring system health.

**Reviewed Date:** May 18, 2022

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

My association utilizes PaperTrail to gather logs from our miniature administrations. It is simple for architects to troubleshoot issues with PaperTrail when they can utilize relationship IDs to get to each of the logs for a solicitation across various administrations in a single control center. Every so often, we use PaperTrail to make cautions for specific log occasions.

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

Live following is fine, however, looking through old logs can be exceptionally sluggish.
PaperTrail doesn't offer any investigation highlights.

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

PaperTrail serves a truly significant capacity for us: merged logging. As applications get more muddled and move to different VMs, it can get logically more diligently to sort out where issues are happening. Probably the most effective way to fix this is to get logs naturally sent out of our VMs and into a comprehensive view. PaperTrail does that for us.

It has a great ability for visualization and provides analytical data without any great hassle. It's easy to set up and has a good price.

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

Not user-friendly and has a good learning curve for new beginners. It doesn't have good documentation to start off. So you need to connect with the support first in case you are stuck.

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It saves and shows logs according to your need, so it helps users save lots of time and effort. The software is very useful and stable, so I would recommend this to others.

Tools available to help setup Windows and Linux hosts as well as firewalls and switches make testing and setting this up a breeze, and the free trial lets you see if it will work for your environment

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

The cost can be high when the volume gets larger, the product works very well for small to medium deployments but does not scale as well for larger environments.

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We found PaperTrail is a good fit for clients who have compliance requirements to retain log data but do not have the infrastructure to host servers themselves or have a dispersed team

  ### 31. Papertrail Automates my onboarding

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

It’s cost structure was confusing at first

The ability to have multiple machines per host is really nice feature. Additionally, the ability to send errors by email, webhook or with any other integration is nice too.

  ### 33. Useful log management ever seen | Easy for developers to debug

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Commercial Real Estate | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 23, 2021

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

What I like most is debugging line by line with code. Those are the most useful tools for many developers. If we get any error in particular line, then we can check it, and also it is giving SQL query logs that I am using with Ruby On Rails. So it is awesome to use for developers.

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

Not so much that I dislike. But I can recommend this for use.

**Recommendations to others considering PaperTrail:**

If you are a Ruby On Rails Developer, and facing an issue with getting proper logs, then I will surely be recommended PaperTrail.

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am solving a logging mechanism with Paper Trail, where I don't need to login into the root of the server and need to open files and need to find all longs. Here, I got pure logging system where I can see errors as well as clear idea about where it occurs. Also, I have got benefits for searching logs and mostly it is easily fast set up with Ruby On Rails.

  ### 34. Perfect log management

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Igor G. | Security Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 15, 2021

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

Managing billions of logs messages with easy and fast setup, and integrate with full external already in place services. Also, analytics services are already available after setup.

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

Custom parsing not easy to setup, if you work with regex.

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Sending applications logs and sysmon security log and aggregate it.

  ### 35. Real time log management tool

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Gagan K. | Senior SDET, Computer Software, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 04, 2021

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

It helps in getting the application logs, system logs in real-time and you will be alerted in case of a mishap

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

Well, I pretty much like all the features of it so there are no cons for me. Works like a wonder

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps in analyzing the errors in the applications, and with a quick search, you can quickly identify the error instead of going through a heap of logs

  ### 36. PaperTrail is great

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 02, 2019

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

Papertrail is very easy to search for errors and user actions, easy to use, logs are logical and verbose

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

Sometimes the search is a bit fickle and you need to be very specific but for general search it is perfect

**Recommendations to others considering PaperTrail:**

It's a great add on to heroku apps

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I am a test engineer and use it all the time to check on releases and to investigate issues and outages for out many heroku apps

  ### 37. A great "Simple" log collection tool

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 31, 2018

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

Easy to hook up to most apps. Was set up to use in a Ruby on Rails application within minutes.

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

The interface can be somewhat clunky or slow at times.

**Recommendations to others considering PaperTrail:**

I would recommend using PaperTrail to most application users. While not perfect, it will allow for simple log parsing and search. The alternative, which is basic shell access to logs or a having a devops team to create a logging system, will not be as simple or cost-effective.

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

To use a centralized log vendor that would not require me to log into application servers to review logs.

  ### 38. Complete logging stash & aggregation

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Lucas M. | Web Developer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 18, 2016

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

Simple to setup, easy to use, search is a great, save search for future use is very helpful. Log filter based on regexp is a good way to dump unintended date into your logs. Clickable dashboard is good for real time filter, good for group application or heroku process. Archive log to S3 is a nice feature.

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

Search context is not very useful, if you like search for some data and need to see whats comes before or after that.

**Recommendations to others considering PaperTrail:**

As a heroku plugin, Log filter is highly recommended especially if runtime metrics and New Relic Availability tool is running

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Application logging, Users acess, Requests & Errors.

  ### 39. An "ok" log collection tool

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rob M. | Director of Software Development, Health, Wellness and Fitness, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 12, 2016

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

* slack integration
* email alerts
* saved searches that create alerts. For example, alert about " deadlock occurred" is useful to get in your inbox/slack channel
* easy to setup/use
* browser interface

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

* papertrail monthly limit stops collecting data, instead of simply dropping the older data
* very difficult to search for all instances of "X" in the logs, followed by browsing around the area related to "X" every where. Instead, papertrail lets you look at one instance of "X", but then forgets the search condition.
* forces you to create a saved search when you were just trying to have an adhoc search
* it's tended to be unreliable, at times we find ourselves simply logging into the server in question and grabbing the logs.

**Recommendations to others considering PaperTrail:**

Probably should look around for competitors, it's not a worlds best product, but it's not bad either. At about $100/month, its kinda expensive for what it is.

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

makes it easier to track down problems by looking in server logs, thus saving ops time.

  ### 40. Searchable, instant logs from multiple servers

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Tyler L. | Web Developer, Internet, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 14, 2016

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

The ability to search system log files across a large number of servers quickly and filter the results based on keywords or server "groups".

The alerting functionality is also awesome. For example, you can setup an alert when someone logs into a server via SSH, or if a certain users public key was accepted for SSH login.

Also very useful for searching for exploit attempts. Searching for program:httpd "O:"" will yield results for attempts to exploit this Joomla exploit: https://blog.sucuri.net/2015/12/remote-command-execution-vulnerability-in-joomla.html

Searching for "program:httpd "() {"" yields Shellshock exploit attempts.

Very useful.

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

Longer log retention for search across all plans. All plans include an archive of your logs for 1 year, which is sufficient for most.

**Recommendations to others considering PaperTrail:**

They have a plan that's free forever. It only includes a week of archives and the last 48 hours of logs are searchable. Pretty decent for free.

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Monitoring for exploit attempts, making sure that the proper people are the only ones logging into systems, weather it's SSH or MySQL.

  ### 41. Very useful log aggregration

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kevin V. | Software Architect, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 07, 2016

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

PaperTrail handles log aggregation well and the price is great. It may not be as full featured as other log aggregators like Splunk, however the price is substantially less. It gets the job done well for basic log aggregation. PaperTrail also has a fantastic support team that has delivered every time.

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

The search facility is functional but could be improved, it could stand for more search options than just a string text box.. selecting multiple machines, etc. The product itself functions well overall but I don't see many product updates or new features. The feature set from my perspective has been about the same since our initial implementation. It could use some smart analysis of log events and determine prolific issues as well as the ability to filter out events that are deemed less important.

**Recommendations to others considering PaperTrail:**

Papertrail is rsyslog compatible so it's relatively easy to use with something like NXLog.

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

PaperTrail aggregates logs and is generally easy to setup. It's completely solved the problem of having to jump on different machines to see what's going on. Now it's just a matter of hopping onto Papertrail, which has saved a tremendous amount of time.

  ### 42. Does what it says on the tin

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dave N. | Director of DevOps, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 05, 2016

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

Papertrail is one of these "simple but powerful" services that does what it says on the tin and "just works". It's very easy to send logs from 1 system or 1000 systems to Papertrail and then intelligently search the logs or trigger alerts.

The search functionality in particular is very simple to use and understand and being able to save searches or send the results to external tools like Slack is very helpful.

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

The alerting, while very good, could be better. It's good at finding specific patterns or a number of events but cannot easily be used for trending (ie. alert me when things go outside of a defined or determined normal)

**Recommendations to others considering PaperTrail:**

Papertrail and the people behind it are fantastic. It's easy to setup yet powerful to use and the support team is top notch.

I would recommend on the Linux side using nxlog to gather and send logs to papertrail. It's incredibly flexible and reliable.

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use Papertrail to centralize logs from all of our servers. In a cloud environment where auto-scaling is utilized, logging onto a machine to view logs is just not possible. Papertrail allows us to centralize all logs and then give access to people who need them. We can also alert on specific log messages or an amount of log volume (ie. notify me when web app AVC has 50 HTTP 500 errors in a 1 minute period)

  ### 43. Use it everyday

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Leisure, Travel & Tourism | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 20, 2016

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

Best thing in the whole world. I use it everyday to track down bugs and get alerts about issues in my application. I can't tell you how many times I was able to find a bug quicker because of papertrails kick as searching features. Also love the fact that I can set the timezone since we have a dispersed team. Makes my like so much better.

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

I wish they had a tool that helped me load in old logs and search for them. It's really difficult to find things in old logs in a .txt file

**Recommendations to others considering PaperTrail:**

Set up alerts to Slack and use a logging library like winston

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Being able to dynamically search logs can help our dev team find and squash bugs 10 times faster

  ### 44. Use papertrail for logging for our web app

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Parag S. | President, Internet, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 13, 2016

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

How instant it is and how easy it was to set up.

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

I believe the integrations could be a bit more streamlined and would be nice if it was easier with multiple deployments.

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Ability to get real time logging within our web app so we can see what is happening. It also integrates with Slack so its helpful when there are errors.

  ### 45. Papertrail is the first add-on I provision on any new Heroku app

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 02, 2016

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

Papertrail is simple, straightforward and relatively powerful. More than any other logging service I've used, I find Papertrail to strike the right balance between usability and complexity when I need to manage or review my logs.

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

Papertrail doesn't leave a lot to criticize – they could probably update the UI a bit, but that's a pretty trivial issue in the grand scheme of things.

**Recommendations to others considering PaperTrail:**

If you can deal with a more simplified alert condition system, Papertrail has a lot going for it.

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Papertrail is a great way to get a handle on Heroku's app logging, set simple log alerts, and search/archive logs permanently. Simply as a service to archive our logs to S3, Papertrail has been invaluable.

  ### 46. Good log aggregator. Lacks analysis.

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ygor A. | CTO & Co-founder, Research, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 13, 2016

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

The log aggregation, search and live tailing works flawlessly.

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

It doesn't have any analytics capabilities which is a huge disadvantage near the competitors.

**Recommendations to others considering PaperTrail:**

If all you need is log aggregation, search and live tailing, go for it. If you need analytics, Papertrail is not the choice.

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are a mobile crowdsourcing startup with 300000 users in brazil and apps for both iOS and Android. Paper trail is used to aggregate and search all logs generated by all our servers.

  ### 47. Works great when you are small, expensive when you are big

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Tapan P. | Principal Software Engineer, Information Technology and Services, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 24, 2015

**What do you like best about PaperTrail?**

It's super easy to integrate into your infrastructure. Almost all logging libraries in any language support syslog and since papertrail has a syslog interface, you can easily start logging to papertrail. Search works well and I like how you can configure sources, etc. to make it clickable to filter.

**What do you dislike about PaperTrail?**

Becomes really expensive when your logging needs go up. We were paying more for logging on papertrail than our servers. Search also becomes really really slow at that scale. Doesn't provide graphs from logs out of the box. Would've loved that.

**Recommendations to others considering PaperTrail:**

Definitely tune and filter the logs you send to papertrail. It's not for debug logging. It gets very expensive as your log size grows. We have never experienced any outage and service always worked well so it's definitely reliable.

**What problems is PaperTrail solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We did not want to set up our own logging infrastructure and scale and maintain it. Papertrail was the perfect solution for that. Easy to integrate into our infrastructure, easy to use.
