We are essentially being forced to pay for these AI features and having the features we *chose* to pay for, previously, removed and put into higher tiers of the software. The great quality auto generated summaries, which are handy for skim reading. Having a shared place for the source data, the tagging phase, the analysis phase (eg thematic analysis of tagged highlights in a canvas view) and having a way of building a summary & recommendations page via the insights functionality where you can include video snippets to loop back to the source. I also appreciate being able to share links to the project summary aswell as links to specific quotes to try and help keep insights surfaced within the team via Slack. **What do you dislike about Dovetail?** Despite the auto summary being pretty reliable, in general I've not found the AI suite of tools to be comprehensive enough to fully trust yet and still prefer to manually tag. However, it removed features and replaced them with AI tools that are inadequate and misleading, while also making the interface increasingly confusing. **What do you dislike about Dovetail?** We built a large research database in Dovetail over three years, which included numerous interviews, highlights, insights, and global tags. A few months ago, Dovetail removed the features that helped us navigate this extensive database, stating that they are now only available in the ten times more expensive enterprise plan (10x just to be able to use it as we did before). Their customer support seemed indifferent to our disappointment, responding with something like, "We have AI features that can replace your old workflows." However, these new features are poor, and as a result, we now have to spend significantly more time in Dovetail. Additionally, the transcription feature hasn't been updated in years, and other tools provide more accurate and cleaner transcriptions. Essentially, Dovetail keeps adding new features that aren't as good while removing or halting the development of the features that made it useful for us. **What problems is Dovetail solving and how is that benefiting you?** It used to manage and navigate our large database of insights and user research effectively, and transcribing many calls to text. You have to work to add folders and tags otherwise it's all a flat list. So I don't need to take notes while talking to people or listen to the video several times and manually do everything. **What do you dislike about Dovetail?** Maybe having the transcript be a bit more accurate, it often happens to be wrong, and I have to edit it manually. To be honest, I still haven't gotten to know everything Dovetail offers. The tool allows synthesis to become much faster so that you can truly glean insights by quickly scanning across the transcript. Another feature that distinguishes Dovetail is its tagging capabilities--you can highlight a quote in the transcript, which allows you to compile and synthesize themes. The more you tag notable quotes throughout the transcript, the easier it is for you to come back and click on the tag so that you can see all the video quotes associated with that theme. This feature provides an easy way to get your team collaborating quickly and is also great for pulling up to clients or stakeholders to take them on the customer journey with you. Dovetail is an incredibly powerful tool that makes a huge difference in the ease with which you can complete your interview synthesis. **What do you dislike about Dovetail?** Nothing so far--I think the product can be improved with some auto-tagging features--perhaps when a user searches for a word throughout all the data, there could be a feature that allows "tag all" and compile the quotes around that word to be instantly viewable. I do find that some team members may have a bit of a learning curve the first time they are using the tool, and it takes a little tutorial to get them used to it and seeing the value. This allows you to not only mark key points but develop a taxonomy of needs for interviewees. There is no method I have found to be more simple in terms of accomplishing this. **What do you dislike about Dovetail?** Dovetail does have a slight learning curve when getting started. It may challenge your existing techniques for developing insights. I wish it had a better getting started tutorial that work alongside the example projects. It would also be great to have the ability to zoom out a bit from the board and graphs to something more like an idea/insights board. Maybe all of your coded data points could move to a digital post-it note and grouped based on theme. That way you can more easily move data around from group to group and see where the data is building up. Even while using Dovetail to do the initial coding and organization I will still take key data, write them on post-its and group them on a big whiteboard. It helps to take everything in to see trends as well as to involve others in the process. The computer monitor can sometimes be too personal of an experience to be useful. Insights should be scrutinized by people with different perspectives to ensure a good fit. **Recommendations to others considering Dovetail:** Be prepared to take your insights development process to a new level. It helps bring all your research planning, source data, analysis and reporting together, so you can not only share the final results but all the supporting work that helped you get there. It's also really helpful in making research easier to conduct - you can create templates for different project types, track all your participants individually, or use the same tag set across as many projects as you want. That and the transcript feature have really sped up our research processes. It's free for members of your company to have viewer accounts (which can view and comment) which makes it a great place to store and share research work. Accounts are super quick to set up – about 80% of our company has an account, and everyone from devs to support actively looks at research results. **What do you dislike about Dovetail?** The insights (reporting) tool could use a bit of love – it's just not quite powerful enough yet. It needs a way to create a table of content, or to sort insights into categories. And Dovetail could be more helpful on the analysis side – the tagging tools and the current charts are great, but it would be even more valuable to see it go a step further, and help you do things like see which tags occur together, or do some NLP on the text, etc. The company is definitely small but mighty, and they do seem to release new features often, so I'm sure all these things are coming! **What problems is Dovetail solving and how is that benefiting you?** We found that our research was scattered across many locations and was difficult to find once finished, which made it hard to follow decisions after the fact, or to understand how a team learned something. We also had a ton of qualitative research data and needed a better analysis tool for that.
