Kill Bill is an open source billing and payments platform for subscription and usage based businesses. The core is free and released under the Apache 2.0 license. It has been in production since 2010, has processed billions of dollars in revenue, and manages more than 100,000 subscriptions, for companies from growth stage startups to the Fortune 500.
Fixed price, not a share of your revenue
Kill Bill is sold as a flat annual fee. There is no percentage of revenue and no per transaction charge. Your billing cost is not tied to how fast you grow.
You run it, you keep the data
The platform runs in your own cloud account and your own database. Your billing data never leaves your infrastructure, which helps with data residency and audit requirements. The architecture is self hosted and auditable, with the technical controls needed for PCI compliance, including encryption at rest and in transit. The source code is public, so your team can review it before buying anything. You can install it yourself, deploy it from the AWS Marketplace, or have it operated for you on the Kill Bill Hosted Platform. A sandbox is available if you want to test it first.
What the open source core covers
Subscriptions: catalogs, plans, trials, add ons, upgrades, downgrades, and proration.
Invoicing: recurring and one off invoices, credits, adjustments, and multiple currencies.
Payments: gateway plugins maintained in the project, with payment retries and dunning rules included.
Usage based and hybrid pricing: pre aggregated usage per subscription, with volume tiers next to fixed fees.
Account hierarchies with parent and child invoicing, and multi tenancy to run several brands or divisions on one deployment.
REST APIs and a plugin framework, so you add your own rules inside the platform instead of building systems around it.
Kaui, the admin console used by finance, operations, support, and product teams.
What Aviate adds
Aviate is our commercial software, and it runs on the same deployment as the core. It comes in four packages, each one including the one below it. Entourage adds an operational admin workspace. Growth adds the catalog, pricing, and metering control plane. Flock adds quote, order, and contract workflows with operational BI dashboards. Finance adds custom commercial terms and rollout planning. Aviate also covers tax computation, with connectors to Avalara AvaTax and Vertex, and a wallet with prepaid credits.
Support is a separate purchase, also at a flat annual fee. Enterprise Support adds a 48 hour SLA on critical production issues and a priority channel to the engineers who build the platform.
Kill Bill fits teams that need to own their billing logic: complex catalogs, usage based models, account hierarchies, several payment providers, or strict data residency rules. Finance and operations run the day to day in Kaui. Engineering keeps control of the model and the data.
