But they can still get the documents. **What do you dislike about Hāpara?** Everything. -Want to upload more than one document at a time? Too bad you can't. -Want to authenticate who you are for every document you upload, even if you are doing a bunch? Good, that's what happens. -Want to move a card from one column to the other? Nope, make a new card. -Notice an error in a document? You think you could just change your original document and that would fix it. Nope, Hapara has created a copy of you document for each workspace. Go change them all! -Want to add a picture to a card? Make sure you do it first, because you will never have that option again. -Trying to edit a card? Make sure your cursor doesn't stray out of the box because the card will just shut down. Taking a Snap and trying to bow it up results in a fuzzy unreadable box. When I spoke with a Hapara tech representative, he had no answer. When I sent him a screen shot of it and asked him to tell me what it said he left. Hapara is not interested in fixing the problem. My previous school used AB Tutor and it was far better. **What problems is Hāpara solving and how is that benefiting you?** I've asked themm to make the individual viewing box larger than 1/4 size to at least 1/2 size. I can honestly say that I access the Hāpara Dashboard and/or Workspace daily. It has been a game changer in keeping me organized on class material and assignments. Hāpara Workspace has made it possible for me to organize my courses, units, or projects in one location. The ability to create groups that are unique to my own students/class allow me to scaffold tasks based on how much work they have completed, ability level, interests, etc. Students know where they can go to find the material and when the assignments are due. As well as organizing the material, I can also choose when to have cards (tasks, subject material, assessments) automatically become available. Allowing students to see what happens next at their pace helps students to feel they are in control of what they need to do next instead of feeling anxious and overwhelmed by what is left to do. As students finish assignments, they can "submit" their work. I am then able to see who has and has not completed assignments. When I am marking their work, I can provide feedback directly in Hāpara, as well as a mark, followed by choosing to either send the assignment back for editing, or return the assignment with a final mark. Hāpara Dashboard is a one-stop space to access students Google Drives, control what students are able to view while in class (guided and focused browsing, scheduled sessions with access to specific sites), send messages to as many students as I need to, and "handout" documents as class shared, class view, class editing, or individual student editing. The ability to close browser windows help students stay focused on their tasks and avoiding the issue of "policing". Sending links to students chromebooks automatically opens the site for them which saves time for me. I do not have to go from student to student to enter the url. There is a lot that Hāpara can help teachers do in order to manage their class material and reduce the behaviour management of a class. When I am away, substitute teachers do not have to jump in and figure out how to use another program. With the ability to schedule sessions and send out assignments, Ican develop sub plans that allow students to get right on task without having to worry about my substitute having difficulty accessing specific sites or figuring out another program. Hāpara is continuously seeking feedback from their users. Over time there have been many changes based on what the needs of teachers are. Every teacher has a process they like to follow when it comes to distributing assignments and marking them. It does take some people time to get the hang of what works best for them when using Hāpara, but training session are provided asynchronously, synchronously, or blended. **What do you dislike about Hāpara?** As previously mentioned, Hāpara is always asking for feedback. If there is something you need help with, each screen has a link to send feedback or ask questions. I am sure there are dislikes for many people, but I have found that simply asking how I can do something on the platform or by connecting with other educators on their community app, I am able to save a lot of time and stress trying to figure it out on my own. **What problems is Hāpara solving and how is that benefiting you?** When developing course material, I begin with organizing material in Google Drive and then add them to Hāpara Workspace to keep the course material easily accessable by students. It saves me time! Who doesn't like to save time. ### 9. It is cumbersome to navigate, is not very intuitive and difficult to add/manage users. **What problems is Hāpara solving and how is that benefiting you?** In a digital world, Hapara solves the problem of monitoring student work and progress, as well as, maintaining student focus. Additionally, Hapara makes differentiation and personalization easy and discreet. ### 10. I like the ability to create groups so that different students can be given what they need in order to be successful with their peers. This feature is fantastic--I can see what I have given them and when they last accessed it. **What do you dislike about Hāpara?** I don't love the student monitoring capabilities, as sometimes it's not always accurate and it's often slow. By the time I need to see what a student is looking at on their screen, they may have moved on OR they have literally hacked their device to make it look like they're on a page that they are not. I am aware of this, but other less tech savvy teachers may not be. **What problems is Hāpara solving and how is that benefiting you?** For me, this allows me to push readings, a GPA calculator, and other documents out to students that are not able to be easily set onto our LMS. They'd get lost in the stream or aren't able to be kept in an easy to find spot. By being in their class folder in their drive and by my being able to drop it to my entire class at one time it is easy for both my students and myself. ### 11. And workspace, its been a lifesaver in terms of planning, teaching and increasing students ability to develop key digital competency skills, self management and student agency. **What do you dislike about Hāpara?** If I could critque anything it would be not being able to assign workspaces as part of a focus session and not being able to screenshot with a time stamp of student activity in current screens. I find you can do that in snaps but it doesn't pick up all unusal activity. If there was a feature that allowed the teacher to red flag screens that would help the effectiveness of student accountability and I feel reduce teachers need to sit behind the screen acting like the internet watchdog. **What problems is Hāpara solving and how is that benefiting you?** Its helped my planning, teaching and delivery massively. I feel more organised and I love that I can create workspaces, archive them and reuse when needed. Being able to search and browse through other workspaces has also been helpful as it cuts down the workload. I have found my literacy programme runs so much smoother and my students are thriving with being able to see rubrics, weekly goals, online modelling books etc. ### 12. These are extra features that must be added on. I wonder if renaming the "Highlights tab "to something like "Monitoring" may help alleviate confusion. **What problems is Hāpara solving and how is that benefiting you?** Hapara is helping to streamline my usage of Google classroom with what I think is a more friendly interface for my second grade students. For example, there are some things that I can only find in the teacher view right now. **What problems is Hāpara solving and how is that benefiting you?** We aim to keep our students educationally occupied during their classes and then also help them make good choices in viewing options when outside of class. I can differentiate without others knowing. I can keep an eye on what my students are doing and redirect them as required and offer feedback when I see they are going wrong. Students are able to work on their work even when they are away from school. If I am away I know my students know where to go and what to do with all the resources they need to support them in one place, making it easy for whoever comes in to cover just to supervise. **What do you dislike about Hāpara?** I haven't yet found anything that I dislike about Hāpara. **What problems is Hāpara solving and how is that benefiting you?** Makes it easy to support students learning by adding resources for students to revisit after the teaching. I can add work at the right level without students feeling singled out so it is helping to keep students mana and develop their confidence. Students are learning to take ownership and responsibility for their own learning. I can add and remove tasks as I need. Allows me to work 1:1 or in small groups with students to support their needs as the other students have the support and work they need to continue on with. I can monitor students' computers and keep them on track silently without interrupting the whole class. **What do you dislike about Hāpara?** Hapara is a web-based program with Google, so when students use their Chromebooks, we can only see programs based on the web. If a student was to download a game, we could not monitor that student because the game is not web-based. I dislike having to get students familiar with multiple systems and structures, so having Hapara and Google together is an excellent match that covers all our needs. **What do you dislike about Hāpara?** Currently, it takes 48 hours from student registration to Hapara-ready, minimum. I would love if it took less. (Overnight for PowerSchool to sync and then another overnight to sync to Hapara). Also, I would love some more formatting options for text in Workspaces. The <\> work is tricky for me. **What problems is Hāpara solving and how is that benefiting you?** I teach At Home Learning for six different grades. Each grade is taught four classes, so I have 24 courses that all have multiple differentiation needs within the course. Hapara is how I am able to keep track of ALL of the course work and best deliver it to my students. ### 26. The pedagogical practices that are encouraged by Hāpara are very aligned with my philosophy of education, where students are encouraged to become good digital citizens while they participate in a variety of learning tasks that are customizable, adaptable and flexible. **What do you dislike about Hāpara?** The Hāpara program does take a little bit of time for users to learn how to navigate at first, and there are many Workspaces that get quite 'vertical' as they grow in size. **What problems is Hāpara solving and how is that benefiting you?** The most significant way that Hāpara makes it better for teachers to use is with the 'Third Column' tasks (Google Docs, Slides, Drawing, and more!) that can be immediately duplicated. Each student gets one copy of the task, and the teacher can quickly view the work and provide feedback. Students can submit the task, which can either be assessed or sent back for more editing. ### 30. The students are having a hard time getting to links and assignments and Hapara lets me share links directly to the sites that we are using. I have 6 classes and can easily and quickly switch between each of them in order to set up new lock sessions, freeze tabs, and kick students off websites. The ability to make groups within rosters is wonderful because at times I don't teach my entire class, and this allows me to not affect all of their screens at once. I definitely recommend Hapara to all teachers, especially middle school! **What do you dislike about Hāpara?** The only thing that could be improved, is at times when I set up a session, it'll only let students go on a Home Screen (even if I select to let students use the whole website). However, middle schoolers tend to get distracted when the entire internet is available to then. When integrated with the grading program Jupiter it eliminates almost all need for paper except for chosen paper-centric activities. **What do you dislike about Hāpara?** Sometimes it is slow to load. Occasionally determined students find workarounds and hacks to evade scrutiny of their browsing. I don't know what you could improve, I've seen cast improvements in the 4 or 5 years we've had it at school, but I'm a Latin Teacher, not a tech wizard. **What problems is Hāpara solving and how is that benefiting you?** Since I can use google docs for classwork and homework. I can use a lot more colors and graphics that would cost a lot if I printed them. Also, I can leave a lot more space on the page. as a language teacher, I want students to look at one sentence at a time. Having to compress a lot of text onto a small space to fit leaves less space for work and corrections, as well as more 'background noise' and 'static' for kids focusing o the sentence they are translating. ### 45. I can also limit which websites they are allowed to go on during class to help them focus better on the tasks at hand. I am also able to email an entire class at once - Gmail no longer offers an easy method of creating email groups in bulk. Hapara allows the teacher to pre-schedule focus browse sessions, which has come in handy when I had a substitute and/or a test. **What do you dislike about Hāpara?** The only feature I wish was available is a way to create a recurring focus browse session. This would be particularly beneficial if I could select dates from a calendar and apply a focus session to all of those days at the same start time each day. **Recommendations to others considering Hāpara:** This program is incredibly easy to use once you're accustomed to it. There are a bunch of YouTube video tutorials on how to get the most out of the experience. It will also help you back up your communications to parents and administrators because you can take screenshots and track data. **What problems is Hāpara solving and how is that benefiting you?** I can easily keep my students on task, so it has made classroom management and multitasking much easier! I also love that I can add students and links to a session while it is still in progress. I can create groups of students to check in on specifically or look at the group as a whole. I can see what all of my students are doing and make sure they are on task. If they are not on task I can close out the unapproved tab they are in and send them a note (either one that HAPARA has created or one that I write myself) so the student knows that they need to be on task. The most amazing part is that the student does not have to be in my immediate vicinity for me to watch what they are doing online! For example, at my school, I teach 4th, 5th and 6th Science/SS/Technology. When my 6th graders are in their reading class I can still keep an eye on them and let my partner teacher know if they are not doing what they are supposed to be doing. **What do you dislike about Hāpara?** The only thing that I wish was different is the ability to access their school email accounts directly from HAPARA. I have to log in as them on my computer to see if they are sending inappropriate emails. A minor detail, but it would be easier if I didn't have to complete the extra step. **Recommendations to others considering Hāpara:** Use this product only if you want to be a superstar at classroom management, especially if you teach upper grades. **What problems is Hāpara solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have seen a huge decrease in off-task online behaviors since implementing HAPARA. I no longer have to walk around the room or have them face their monitors the same way. I can just check in on my computer and see all the tabs they are accessing. It helps them to be accountable when they know that I am watching their online activity. It also allows me to give them kudos for being on task and working hard! It has truly been a game-changer for our school, especially with middle school kids. I can also visit the sites they are in and this keeps me from wrongly accusing them of being off task. They might be on You Tube so it looks like they are not doing what they are supposed to be doing, but they are listening to a book or accessing a tutorial. This ability helps with behaviors because I don't have to scold anyone and everyone can keep working. ### 47.
