The UI was fairly intuitive and the help center was actually helpful solving the issues I had. Additionally, our analytics team also gets a ton of value from Census creating new data pipelines easily. **What do you dislike about Fivetran?** The pricing model is confusing -- even after review, we don't understand exactly what we are paying for. The biggest obstacle we've actually had is figuring out if new reports will add to our bill. Despite this, we still got an unforeseen price increase and had to go back and remove fields. **What problems is Fivetran solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use census to connect a number of platforms without having a dedicated data engineering team. In particular, we use the connection between Pipedrive, BigQuery and Google Sheets to develop most of our standardized reporting. ### 2. Census is one of the quickest and easiest ways I've ever used to get product data from a data warehouse to a connected system. I don't even know SQL, but I was able to modify a query that our data team outlined for me to test and deploy a sync in under half a day. I'm looking forward to learning basic SQL so that I can start self-serving the data my team needs through Census. **What do you dislike about Fivetran?** My biggest con of Census currently is not knowing SQL, which is just a gap in my skill set. Once I build knowledge of basic SQL, I don't think I'll have many complaints about the system. Of course, the usability of Census is dependent upon the cleanliness and organization of our DWH, which could use some work, but that's our problem. :) **What problems is Fivetran solving and how is that benefiting you?** I've used Census to push product usage data from our data warehouse into a connected business system. There, we use the data to measure and score customer health, drive action to customer-facing teams, and visualize product usage in the system our reps are working in. ### 3. Right now, this is only offered when creating new sync * If a sync has too many fields, it is challenging to browse through to find the one you are looking for; a search feature would be beneficial here * Setting up an initial sync takes up some time, and it has happened before that I have been logged out when trying to save the sync only to realise that it has all gone and now I need to re-do * A feature to copy an existing sync would be helpful for situations when the same sync needs to be set up for different environments **What problems is Fivetran solving and how is that benefiting you?** * Allows non-technical stakeholders to view the data directly in the business application they use, which now has data from other sources synced to it through Census. * No need to setup any personal infrastructure to do reverse ETL * Using real-time data to feed Braze, which handles our email communications. ### 4. It's a huge time saver and allows us more freedom to experiment & add new things. **What do you dislike about Fivetran?** Not a lot of things! There are a handful of integrations that I'd like them to add, but they are typically super responsive and add them pretty quickly. I hadn't set up my error notifications correctly, so I missed a handful of times when a sync broke. But the notifications are there, you just have to remember to customize. **What problems is Fivetran solving and how is that benefiting you?** It solves the problem of being difficult/manual to connect the data in our Snowflake data warehouse to other tools that we use. This enables to do so much more with our data - connecting it to marketing automation tools to send more intelligent/relevant emails to our users, and to our CRM so sales reps know which users are most active in our product, and so much more. ### 5. It has great insights and notifications if there are any troubles, but honestly we set it and forget it. **What do you dislike about Fivetran?** The logging for connectors is a little hard to decipher but all in all it has the information needed to know whats going on. If they made it a little more user friendly to understand it would be helpful. The other thing that I wished was they were quicker at getting to connector requests. I have a couple I have been waiting for that I would love to see added. **What problems is Fivetran solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are solving getting our data source data to our data warehouse in near realtime with minimal effort. This allows us to focus time on true engineered solutions without getting bogged down in how I get data from point a to point b ### 6. It works well with other lean-team modern data warehouse-type technologies such as Snowflake and DBT. I got 850 Shopify tables and a few other AD sources setup really quickly **What do you dislike about Fivetran?** Whilst Fivetran runs interchangeably across data warehouses, 1) There lack support for low-latency refresh which means if you need data in your apps or dashboards within 5-10 minutes you'll need to build your own custom pipeline 2) APIs are interpreted and landed nicely for you, but this also means there will be a huge switching cost once you build your pipeline on top of the Fivetran loaders. 3) More complicated or large connectors just don't live up to the low-fuss no-code philosophy. There isn't enough architectural knowledge on the Fivetran team to help deploy these connectors successfully. 4) Their logging could be better, troubleshooting really complicated issues like wrong writes has been a non-starter since no write logs take place we simply can't tell how a wrong write ended up there 5) Primary Tables work great (tables with updated timestamps), but not everything syncs and we often have missing records on secondary tables - these are REALLY hard to verify (you only find out when the business points it out) Some Examples of 3: 1) E.g. We've tried to set up a NetSuite connector for over 6 months, the lack of an ERD or data-dictionary map just makes it really tough to get it going 2) Google/Facebook Ads ==> Some connectors don't really drop data as expected - for web marketing you end up receiving jinja variables rather than the actual attribute {{ UTM }}, other tools such as Supermetrics tend to do better in imputing these for the end user. **What problems is Fivetran solving and how is that benefiting you?** Bootstrapping - As the person leading up a newly formed team, there was literally no way to build a Data Warehouse within 6 months without one of these low-code points and click connectors. I had a look at Stitch vs. Fivetran and decided to go with Fivetran even though Stitch had more connectors because Fivetran had developed DBT packages. Even though I no longer use them (the packages), they were a huge timesaver when I first started out. ### 7. Exposes an API for Airflow (or other orchestration tools) to trigger syncs with upstream dependencies. The alerting features are also useful to keep the team up to date on any issues. **What do you dislike about Fivetran?** Currently, you cannot dual schedule on a connector ingest e.g. run every 15 minutes between 08:00-17:00 then run hourly between 17:00 and 08:00. People rarely need 15-minute refresh schedules overnight! It would also be useful to decouple the ingest and transform scheduling so that they don't auto run together in sequence. The costs of high-volume connectors are not the cheapest on the market. **What problems is Fivetran solving and how is that benefiting you?** Fivetran is allowing our data engineering team to ingest and transform data (via DBT) in our environment at speed and with reliability, the tools are designed to reduce significant overheads of maintaining and monitoring data ingestion connections and feeds. The ability to pair with DBT allows for us to run our ingest and transform processes with more ease vs. some of the competitors that we assessed. ### 17. The product itself is always growing and anytime I've submitted feedback it's been reviewed and implemented quickly. **What problems is Fivetran solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are a PLG company and on the revenue side, we are most successful when we can leverage product data.
