## SoftChalk Reviews
  ### 1. Faculty-Friendly, Student-Interactive Online Course Design

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Heather V. | Instructional Design and Faculty Development Coordinator, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 30, 2020

**What do you like best about SoftChalk?**

Softchalk Cloud lessons integrate easily with our Learning Management System, and they allow interactive, self-grading activities to engage students with the content. The lessons are extremely customizable and easy to develop for most faculty.

**What do you dislike about SoftChalk?**

There are times when Softchalk Cloud formatting can be glitchy. There have been times when content has been lost when the desktop editor freezes between times it is saved. There are times when it is necessary to code in HTML in order to make necessary formatting changes, and many faculty do not have that knowledge or ability.

**Recommendations to others considering SoftChalk:**

Be sure to make use of the Softchalk Cloud Tutorials included on their website. They are excellent and some of the most thorough tutorials of any company I have seen in the field of education.

**What problems is SoftChalk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

A problem with developing online content is finding engaging, interactive learning activities to go along with the subject matter. Softchalk has a large variety of activities, such as quizzes, crossword puzzles, matching activities, and others that are customizable to the content.

  ### 2. User friendly and clean

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ashley Z. | Spanish Professor, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 24, 2020

**What do you like best about SoftChalk?**

SoftChalk Cloud allows me to create lessons that have clean lines and are easy for students to follow. It is user friendly for both my production purposes and for students engaging with the final product. I like that it doesn't look clunky and my students can come in, get the info they need, and be able to move on to complete the assessments for what they have learned. It is streamlined and the product is really made with both the teacher and student in mind. It even integrates into other Learning Management Systems like Canvas.

**What do you dislike about SoftChalk?**

I don't see a downside to using SoftChalk Cloud, nothing to do with this product has inhibited anything in my courses or effectiveness in teaching and learning.

**Recommendations to others considering SoftChalk:**

If you want an easy way to publish content online, this is a great program for that.

**What problems is SoftChalk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I'm finding ways to connect with my students and deliver learning resources.

  ### 3. Make learning engaging

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 04, 2019

**What do you like best about SoftChalk?**

You can embed just in time learning so students practice over time and learn repetitively through remediation. You can create an interactive journey of knowledge.

**What do you dislike about SoftChalk?**

The formatting is finicky and it often creates unwanted areas based on html code. If you do not know coding it is difficult to create an aesthetically pleasing form.

**Recommendations to others considering SoftChalk:**

Make sure you review ADA compliance and how to ensure that your formatting in softchalk is not affected by unseen code (HTML)

**What problems is SoftChalk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Create engaging activities to help students and teachers interact with content in a meaningful way.
Gamification of content
Embedding content when it is useful so it is a click away and not a search away.

  ### 4. Served me well for years!

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Susan J. C. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 11, 2020

**What do you like best about SoftChalk?**

Ease of use and built in accessibility features.

**What do you dislike about SoftChalk?**

That it is more promoted for K-12 instruction instead of higher education. Not many in higher education are familiar with it.

**What problems is SoftChalk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

In the past I have created Entire courses in SC. Easy to incorporate accessibility and to post on LMS or link to website.

  ### 5. An excellent product to support online learning materials

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ian M. | eLearning Manager, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 22, 2017

**What do you like best about SoftChalk?**

Softchalk is so easy to use. You can create online courses in less than 30mins. When you load them to the Softchalk cloud you can deliver to any LMS using the cloud links. It is a very flexible way of delivering materials online in many different ways including ebooks.

**What do you dislike about SoftChalk?**

Although the product is great it looks a little dated in the way it looks and I look forward to a new look and feel in the future.

**What problems is SoftChalk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have wanted a way to create and build learning materials outside our LMS so that we can deliver anywhere. Softchalk Cloud delivery allows this function with revisions and auto backup so materials are not lost. There is also a private cloud option if you require a very secure delivery.

  ### 6. Softchalk - great capabilities when not slow and glitchy

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in E-Learning | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 12, 2016

**What do you like best about SoftChalk?**

The ability to create content in a cloud format that works with our creation goals. Fairly easy to use and intuitive.

**What do you dislike about SoftChalk?**

So incredibly slow saving to Softchalk Cloud. Glitches and won't save often enough. Very frustrating. I think we are finally used to the lack of speed.

**What problems is SoftChalk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Benefit is working together and all having access to the files in a private cloud format.

  ### 7. Softchalk, LMS

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in E-Learning | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 08, 2016

**What do you like best about SoftChalk?**

It is often difficult to update course content when we are running multiple sections. SoftChalk allows us to make a single change to the page and provide updated information to all sections.

**What do you dislike about SoftChalk?**

The online editor is a little buggy so I still rely on downloading the SoftChalk lesson, make changes and upload it back to the cloud. This process can be time consuming.

**Recommendations to others considering SoftChalk:**

Improve the online editor.

**What problems is SoftChalk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use SoftChalk to provide student training. Again, any change will be pushed to all of our courses.

  ### 8. SoftChalk Cloud:

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Elizabeth M. | Statewide Lead Coordinator for Minnesota Online Quality Initative, Higher Education, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 23, 2015

**What do you like best about SoftChalk?**

I most appreciate that SoftChalk Cloud allows me to create lessons and other content that includes interactive features, the ability to easily add multi-media, and focuses on usability and accessibility throughout. If you know how to work in a basic word-processing program, creating great-looking lessons or content in SoftChalk requires a very small learning curve. I also like that I can use the Cloud feature as an LOR and link my content into multiple places in our LMS or point users directly to a lesson or web resource by providing the URL without having to go through the LMS or hosted web site.

**What do you dislike about SoftChalk?**

I appreciate being able to create page names for ease of navigation but wish that it would be possible for the page names to be more than 7 characters long. Sometimes 7 characters just isn't enough to have a descriptive page name that makes sense.

**What problems is SoftChalk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Using SoftChalk Cloud makes it possible to create web-based help resources that can be linked to directly rather than having to embed the resource into an LMS or other hosted site.

  ### 9. Not for Mac Users

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Media Production | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 29, 2016

**What do you like best about SoftChalk?**

I like the ability to layout in shortened pages rather than long pages.

**What do you dislike about SoftChalk?**

The support for safari or macs in general is abysmal. I've stopped using SoftChalk because of it.

**Recommendations to others considering SoftChalk:**

Stick with HTML. While soft chalk offers some nice features, it is hard to use especially on a mac requiring extra steps that just don't make it worth the hassle.

**What problems is SoftChalk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

In the beginning I was looking to dress up my online lectures and Softchalk allowed me to do that. Now, I find I can accomplish the same with HTML and it is easier to upgrade and make changes.

  ### 10. Great Online Course Content Creation Tool

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Adam F. | Adjunct Faculty, Higher Education, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 06, 2015

**What do you like best about SoftChalk?**

SoftChalk Cloud is by far the easiest and the most flexible way to create and manage online course content that can also be LMS-independent. Educators do not need to obtain or learn any computer/web programming skills in order to create both interactive learning content that can be easily integrated into their online courses.

**What do you dislike about SoftChalk?**

The major disadvantage towards using Softchalk Cloud is that it requires a Java-based app to in order to create and edit content. Although, this allows content to be viewed on multiple platforms (Android, iOS, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, etc), the required use of Java slows down the application's overall performance and has even caused several software crashes.

**Recommendations to others considering SoftChalk:**

A great feature to Softchalk Cloud is their media repository. This allows users to easily search for any related content (videos and images) that they an implement into their lessons. In addition, this content comes through the Creative Commons license, which implies that users can use the repository's content without worrying about any copyright infringement violations.

**What problems is SoftChalk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Many of our full-time faculty wanted to share their course content with adjunct faculty. Softchalk Cloud makes it very easy for instructors and professors to create content folders allowing them to share their lesson folders with other faculty members.

  ### 11. Softchalk cloud lesson building review

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Cherie V. | Senior Instructional Developer, Higher Education, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 03, 2015

**What do you like best about SoftChalk?**

The fact that faculty can edit from anywhere an ALL places where the module exists is updated is a plus. With multiple sections of a class this feature is crucial to quick updates. I also like the widget feature. In particular the timeline widget and Quick self checks. These are extremely helpful. Being able to embed a video and then stop to self check can be helpful for a student to make sure they understand the concept prior to continuing on with the lesson. The quick and easy interface seems easy to use and learn. We trained about 4 faculty who were interested in using it. it went well and they said it wasn't too hard to use.

**What do you dislike about SoftChalk?**

The only thing we had issues with was the LTI integration with Moodle. We did struggle a bit with getting that to work on our new fall server. Once we went through the help materials in more depth and looked at our settings we were able to get it up and running smoothly. The quizzing feature took a bi to get to go into the gradebook, but we eventually got it to work.

**Recommendations to others considering SoftChalk:**

Make sure if you plan to use LTI integration that you have the proper support information.

**What problems is SoftChalk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The problem we are solving is how to interact and create lessons for students that are easy to update, interactive, and easily integrate within our systems. We want to do more flipped classroom and blended learning environments. Softchalk seems to be a good solution for faculty who want to see how their students progress and to create self-contained lessons for students to view OUTSIDE class and then they come into class and actually engage more in depth wit the content as a class. So far we are in the early stages and have not gauged any measurable benefits yet. After this fall semester we will be able to get some feedback from our faculty who are using it.

  ### 12. SoftChalk Cloud makes it easy to maintain consistency

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brenda B. | Director of Professional Development, Education Management, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 30, 2015

**What do you like best about SoftChalk?**

We are able to maintain consistency across our professional development workshops and courses by using SoftChalk Cloud for our lessons. When we update one lesson, all sessions are updated.

**What do you dislike about SoftChalk?**

There is not much to dislike about SoftChalk Cloud. The Creative Commons licensing features are not useful when all content is copyrighted, but the "CC" licensing can be turned off. The linear construction doesn't allow for "branching" but there are work-arounds for being able to structure lessons to branch in different directions.

**Recommendations to others considering SoftChalk:**

SoftChalk Cloud provides a centralized repository for our lessons. We've been very happy with the ease of getting up to speed and the support provided by the cracker jack support team at SoftChalk!

**What problems is SoftChalk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We are solving the problem of having to manage updates across many individual sessions that are short in duration by using SoftChalk Cloud which has increased efficiency and brings our participants the latest information in a timely fashion.

  ### 13. SoftChalk Cloud for use as a content and lesson repository

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nathan T. | Senior Systems Specialist; Research & Development Coordinator, E-Learning, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 29, 2015

**What do you like best about SoftChalk?**

I like that it allows the for content to be updated seamless while it is shared in multiple systems( LMSs, Websites, email flyers). These update are done once while all your systems will receive the updated content without you having to request it or perform duplicate work (this is the real treasure of Softchalk cloud). Softchalk is also HTML5 based so as long as the content you put into it is as well it will work on multiple platforms.

**What do you dislike about SoftChalk?**

There are still some limitations in the development environment. It requires a java based client app to design the content. Although, this offers some strength in some areas of development it truly limits the product for its dependency on a 3rd party tool and it would just be nice to develop most of the content online. Having both as option would make the product great.

**Recommendations to others considering SoftChalk:**

Definitely consider carefully the private cloud option as this make administering users easier.

**What problems is SoftChalk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I work for a Virtual School and we are developing a great deal of our content in Softchalk Cloud because it offers us LMS independence and the flexibility to share our content with whoever we want. The single point of update to the content is vital to us as we offer multiple section of many courses and often will share lesson across these sections. So, having the ability to perform quick fixes content is paramount and saves us time.

  ### 14. My experience with SoftChalk Cloud has been fantastic with all the activities that are available.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 30, 2015

**What do you like best about SoftChalk?**

It is easy to access for the students. The students have interactive activities and quizzes to practice and the instructor receives immediate feedback. You can also upload a video within your lesson and ask questions about the video using the quizzes.

**What do you dislike about SoftChalk?**

There is not anything to dislike with SoftChalk Cloud.

**Recommendations to others considering SoftChalk:**

As an educator one can use SoftChalk Cloud in a variety of ways. You can organize your lessons and present them in class. You can use the lessons as tutorials for the students. You can use the quizzes and activities as assessments with immediate feedback. As a SoftChalk Cloud user you can look through all the other lessons that have been submitted and use them as needed.

**What problems is SoftChalk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As a teacher I use SoftChalk Cloud for professional development. I have received the benefits of being recognized as a SoftChalk user, and I do presentations to introduce others to SoftChalk Cloud.

  ### 15. Works well with different learning management systems

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Danielle "Marcy" D. | Director of Faculty Studio - Title III, Higher Education, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 03, 2015

**What do you like best about SoftChalk?**

How easy it can be to use with different learning management systems, and how they are working to ensure Web accessibility (which is something that most products are struggling with).

**What do you dislike about SoftChalk?**

How it can be cumbersome to training instructors on how to use it, but really I don't have very much that I don't like about SoftChalk Cloud.

**Recommendations to others considering SoftChalk:**

Try it! It's a really fun program to work with, so if you are looking to implement something new, this is the way to go!

**What problems is SoftChalk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Trying to make courses more engaging and collaborative

  ### 16. Excellent tool for entry-level content authoring

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 29, 2015

**What do you like best about SoftChalk?**

It is an excellent tool for those (in particular teachers) who are new to content authoring and would like to move away from "dumping content" into their LMS

**What do you dislike about SoftChalk?**

In their effort of keeping things simple, stupid, they are neglecting the more advanced/proficient who would want some of the functionality that other competitive tools have.

**Recommendations to others considering SoftChalk:**

If you are looking for any easy to use authoring tool for your learning materials then SoftChalk is the way to go. Not sure about the price-value for money ratio as the institution has previously paid for the license but it's definitely worth considering it as an entry-level solution compared to the some of the more complex solutions like Articulate Storyline or Adobe Captivate.
Consider SoftChalk as an important stepping stone towards making your content more engaging, structured, taking it beyond the "repository" status. Easy enough to use, complex enough to cope with your basic needs, it will become a good companion for you until you decide it's time to move on to something better (although I have found that many teachers are happy with it and have been using it for the past couple of years).
Definitely recommend using the trial version and make the most of it!

**What problems is SoftChalk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

SoftChalk has been useful in authoring content for courses that have a weekly structure and due to the simple navigation menus and tools it makes it easy for students to find out what they need, helps them get into the rhythm of things and gives them a sense of structure for each weekly activities.

  ### 17. A Cloud-Based Solution that WORKS

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Education Management | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 06, 2015

**What do you like best about SoftChalk?**

Excellent service and support, the ease with which users are able to navigate the system and access content. The smoothness of the interface, its clean look and overall good UX.

**What do you dislike about SoftChalk?**

The rare outage, though they're so infrequent as to be almost nonexistent.

**Recommendations to others considering SoftChalk:**

Connect with other users considering a cloud-based course design solution. Take advantage of SoftChalk's resources, review the case studies and take a look at the testimonials. Attend information sessions and visit company representatives at meetings, conferences and other events where they display.

**What problems is SoftChalk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We sought to leverage our existing subscribers to attend targeted information sessions leading up to one of our national events. SoftChalk partnered with us every step of the way to ensure a seamless experience. We saw an increase in positive impressions and improved relationships with attendees.

  ### 18. SoftChalk

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 02, 2015

**What do you like best about SoftChalk?**

Easy to set up and to use. There are a lot of functions that might need high skills in JAVASCRIPT or HTML Language but Softchalk made it easy to create those learning objects without such knowledge.

**What do you dislike about SoftChalk?**

The trial period is too short and the software itself still need minimum knowledge of HTML.

**What problems is SoftChalk solving and how is that benefiting you?**

N/A
