But I much prefer to ultimately work with text rather than voice, so the recordings need to be transcribed before they're useful. I used to do this by hand, and because the recordings were generally 30-60 minutes long, it was very time-consuming. Rev was an enormous boost to my speed and productivity. **What do you like best about Rev?** Rev's transcriptions were accurate, returned quickly, and were priced reasonably enough that even our tiny company could afford them. Because I didn't have to do the transcriptions myself, I was able to do more research calls without fear of creating more work for myself, and I could spend more time on the analysis. **What do you dislike about Rev?** Rev had a harder time with non-standard accents, people who talk very quickly, or the industry jargon. I could add some of the jargon keywords myself, but the reality is that every industry has its own dialect, so that always needed a minor scrub. **Recommendations to others considering Rev:** Rev is a great transcription choice. I used them for dozens - many dozens - of transcriptions and was very pleased with the accuracy, turnaround, and ease of use. That's what I did. **What do you dislike about Rev?** Demoralizing culture of "grading," low pay **Recommendations to others considering Rev:** I was a teacher looking for something to keep me busy and to make a bit of extra money over the summer because the summer program I used to teach for was cancelled due the pandemic. I found Rev on a list of “summer jobs for teachers,” and I am sorry that I ever did. I am a 55-year-old English professor who has taught writing and editing for nearly 30 years. I Googled “summer jobs for teachers” and “editing jobs,” and Rev came up. I took a grammar test and experimented with the software and thought transcription, while not “editing,” might be a good fit for me. Little did I know then that a transcriptionist has little to do with proper language, grammar, usage, and so on, and everything to do with good hearing and the ability to decipher gibberish and unintelligible audio submitted by people who are too lazy to type their own notes. Rev is also the antithesis of every teaching philosophy I’ve ever read or used in my own career. For example, Revvers are “graded” by freelance Revvers who are apparently good enough at transcribing that they can judge others’ work. The scale is 1-5, but you have to maintain a whopping 4.5 to continue working for Rev. In the teaching world, that’s a B+ average. Keep in mind that this is just to keep the job. “Grades” are cloaked in useless comments called “feedback.” One grader gave me a 1 because I – following the customer’s lead – labeled a speaker by his shirt. This same customer had labeled speakers “dark green polo,” “dark blue button up,” and so on in a video I had just finished transcribing. But when I labeled a speaker “male short sleeved shirt” on the next job for the same customer, I was given a 1. My “metrics” obviously fell below 4.5. Rev graders will tell you that all grades are based on Rev’s “style guide.” I have taught copyediting for years and I can tell you that Rev’s guide is not a style guide. MLA, APA, AP, Chicago, etc. all publish style guides. Aside from telling Revvers when to spell out a number and when to use a numeral, the Rev guide is 20 pages of rules and Rev policies that will then be used to grade Revvers harshly and, eventually, to deactivate (aka “fire”) them. In my case, my metrics fell below Rev’s coveted 4.5 on a Thursday and I received a warning email. I worked most of the day Friday to bring up my metrics. However, late Saturday night I received another email that I had been deactivated. That means they fired a 30-year veteran English professor. In all, I worked for Rev for two weeks. The constant emails with my “grades” were demoralizing and humiliating, and anyone deserves more than two days to improve their work. If all of this was a trade-off for decent pay, some might think the process worthwhile. Our parents taught us that if something sounds too good to be true, then it is too good to be true, and nowhere is this more so than with Rev. Don’t let them fool you with the glamour of working from home in your pajamas. We taught through a pandemic, so we know how much fun it is to work from home. Don’t let them fool you, either, with promises that as you become a better Revver you’ll make more money. After my 45 minutes of training, hundreds of jobs did open to me. However, many of them paid 50 cents or less per minute of transcription (as low as 31 cents) and much of the audio was so bad that I couldn’t possibly transcribe efficiently. And when they say they pay by the minute, they mean the minutes of the audio recording, not the minutes that you spend working. Most jobs took me between twice as long and four times as long as the audio because I constantly had to pause, rewind, listen again and again, and try to decipher who was speaking and what they were saying. So a 10-minute project suddenly became anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour and a half of my time. When my accuracy rating fell to 4.4, below Rev’s minimum of 4.5, my account was deactivated and I was no longer able to work for Rev. At that point, I had worked a total of 250 minutes and 55 seconds and had earned $158.32. Keep in mind that those four hours (250 minutes) were the length of the audio files, not the time I worked. So if I worked, say, 12 hours, I made $13/hour, which is less than minimum wage in some states. The quality of the audio was another problem. One audio I transcribed was two heavily-accented people talking while a crew was felling trees in the background. Yes: felling trees. In other cases, people talked over each other, talked through noisy locations like a boiler room, or talked so fast that I couldn’t understand them. Rev’s software can’t transcribe these poor audio files, but Rev expects human transcribers to be correct 90% of the time. It’s worth noting the good work that I did. Of 24 jobs, 18 were graded. Of those 18, I earned 10 perfect 5’s; five rankings of 4; two 3’s; and a 2; I earned the 1 on “formatting,” not accuracy. Accuracy is why I was deactivated. My fellow teachers (and anyone, really), all of this is to say: if you want to occupy your time and make a bit of extra money over the summer, then tutor. Or just apply for a job at your local Six Flags amusement park. You’ll have a wear a silly uniform and they might (though it’s unlikely) assign you to the most degrading of jobs like cleaning the restrooms. But you won’t be “graded” (aka, demoralized and humiliated) by an invisible “Revver” and you can go home feeling good about yourself and your value in the workforce. **What problems is Rev solving and how is that benefiting you?** None ### 11. Their translations don't make any sense! They're made through automated software like Google Translate, and no native speaker of the languages they cover can understand their translations. We've spent $1500 in translations for a webinar and got completely scammed by rev.com, they don't even accept the fact that their translations are completely useless. We had to spend 5x that value having our translators manually redoing ALL of their work. I can't emphasize how aggravating that is. Many of these were conducted with participants who had various accents (Chinese, German, British). With so many interviews to transcribe, I decided to try the Trint.com's artificial intelligence transcription service. Despite previous good experiences with Rev, I was strapped for cash and time and needed the work done fast. Imagine my disappointment when, after receiving the transcripts back (and redoing some with Descript's AI service just in case it was better... it wasn't), the transcripts were LITTERED with errors and resulted in me spending HOURS of my time (and increasing my stress) reviewing, correcting, and in many cases re-transcribing the interviews from scratch (yuck!). So much for saving time. The AI had failed to pick up almost ALL the industry-specific phrases or terms (despite using various vocabulary builders that were provided). It even missed some "normal" phrases. And my "industry terms" were things like "knitting" and "knit" and "cutting" and "sewing" - not exactly obscure words. I was so frustrated I finally decided to run my remaining transcripts through Rev, and let me tell you - if I had a time machine to go back in time to do this all over, I would have just gone with Rev from the start. The accuracy was incomparable to the AI transcriptions I tried. This has saved me SO MUCH time and stress, which was WELL worth the money spent to get it done quickly and effectively. I can now dedicate my time to analyzing the data rather than slogging through listening to the interviews and transcribing them on my own. There IS a light at the end of the tunnel! **What do you like best about Rev?** Fast, accurate transcription. I like that I can indicate the accents of the speakers in advance so that transcribers can choose the files to work with based on their ability with various accents. The one file I had with a heavy Chinese accent took a little longer than indicated to transcribe, but it was INCREDIBLY accurate and I know it was a difficult file to begin with (due to the heavy accent) and I am so grateful the transcriber took the time to get it done accurately. **What do you dislike about Rev?** I wish there was a space to write notes to the transcriber other than the provided check-boxes where you can select the accent, the speaker name, and the key words. For instance, one transcript had all the speaker names allocated incorrectly, and there were additional names included for mystery speakers (even though there were no other speakers in the file). This was a very rare occurence for me, but it would have been helpful to have a space in the file submission screen to indicate that, for example, "speaker 1 is Jane, speaker 2 is Cathy, and speaker 3 is Holly, and they speak in that order in the recording". It would also be helpful to indicate a little more detail about the them of the recording. For example, mine was about industrial knitting, so if I was able to contextualize the interview rather than only provide key words, it might be helpful for the transcriber. **What problems is Rev solving and how is that benefiting you?** The accuracy of the transcripts I received from Rev has saved me WEEKS of work. It was agonizing to slog through the interviews and transcribe them myself. I do not have professional equipment and it was taking a long time and requiring a lot of focus so I was getting burnt out quickly. With 15x 2hr+ interviews to get through, it was looking like a two-week task. Dividing up the recordings to capable transcriptionists gave me back my time and I did not have to worry about reviewing the files as painstakingly as I did when I tried the artificial intelligence transcription (due to my industry phrases/terms). Also if I have to reach out to you by phone there is always a friendly person on the other side that is willing to help make things right. **What do you dislike about Rev?** Sometimes we have calls that are in Spanish but Rev is unable to transcribe them. I wish they were able to branch out and do translations to English. **Recommendations to others considering Rev:** If you have a lot of transcripts needed for a low price, Rev is the place to go. **What problems is Rev solving and how is that benefiting you?** It has saved us many hours of time rather than us doing the work ourselves and it has freed us to help our business in our area's. ### 46. These translations and captions are primarily for our global employees so that they can read and watch content that is in their native language. **What do you like best about Rev?** Our two favorite aspects of Rev is that they provide high-quality translations services very fast and very affordable. Compared to other translation vendors that we have used, they are a fraction of the cost and get us the translation in a fraction of the time. Rev has allowed us to work more effectively and more efficiently so that important messages can be sent in a timely manner, instead of waiting for translations to be completed. **What do you dislike about Rev?** Having similar terms not translated correctly is our only negative with Rev. We hope to see Rev use machine learning to better understand some of our business specific terms that we use often so that we continue to increase the accuracy of translations in the future. **Recommendations to others considering Rev:** If you use Rev, I recommend using the English video captioning service. They do all of the leg work and it is very easy to use the captions for a variety of streaming services. I also recommend using the "prepay balance" so that you don't get charged for every transaction which makes it easier for reporting purposes on your end. **What problems is Rev solving and how is that benefiting you?** With a global workforce not all of our employees speak English. With Rev, we are able to provide high-quality translations and captions for our internal messages to employees. Our employees are better able to understand the vision and direction of our company since they can read messages in their native language and apply the content to their work lives. We've been able to save time and money through Rev and have encourage other teams in our company to use Rev's translation services so that more and more content is available in employees' native languages. ### 47. Also I do coaching sessions and with my clients permission I record the session and then sent if off to be transcribed.
