"Magento CE experience"

What do you like best?

Great user and customers interface that is very easy for using. Great security of the platform and data transferred over it. Extendable in any way your business needs.

What do you dislike?

There is no stock management that works on multiple stores, stock management that is implemented by default works on the main warehouse and there is no possibility for managing warehouse for each store. This is important feature for many businesses. There are custom modules and extensions for this, but this feature should be included in Magento by default.

Reporting system does not work well on multi shops systems, does not shows correct data, especially in cases where there is a multi level users assignment system where for one territory there is Master user which divides territory on smaller parts to franchisee users and these franchisee can divide territory to smaller parts on distributors. In such cases report is taking sale data from each user level, not only from the last assigned and for the same sale you can have double or triple report for TAX and quantity.

Recommendations to others considering the product

great eCommerce platform with a lot of available modules and extensions (free and paid). It is regularly updated by the Magento Developing team and it is in line with latest security updates. Customizable theme is one big plus since you can also make your shop with modern design look.

One thing that is important is that there must be some good PHP developer in-house or from some third party developing company that will install and configure the shop, and it is advisable this developers to install all modules that you would like to use since everything must be well tested before going live.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We have modern shops.

Expandable system in any way we need

In line with all security steps

Possibility various payment options to be used

Easy to manage users, customers and orders

GDPR Compliant

"Magento really grew up!"

What do you like best?

Magento is a really flexible e-commerce platform, started to use it 4 years ago, since then I even created some modules for it.

If you are looking for a decent modular e-commerce solution, you know what to choose, Magento.

I was a little sceptic when I started using it, but its really great!

OK, you need skills, but with a PHP/MYSQL background you will manage easily.

What do you dislike?

Some module makers, cause I do not like to reinvent the wheel, are not always programming as clean and that give sometimes errors, which can give some headaches, the error reporting could be a bit more human readable.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you like to make an already perfect default e-commerce solution even better and like to program yourself, you're good to go!

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Online Webshops, speed, an awesome speed with Magento / Redis

What E-Commerce Platforms solution do you use?

Thanks for letting us know!

"Magento can be powerful, but also very unreliable."

What do you like best?

The powerful capabilities that can withstand companies with hundreds of products and variations. Magento is open source which is great for continued work on code for the platform to get better and better.

What do you dislike?

Magento is kind of like a DIY...you do not have a great "customer service" option if something goes wrong, and if you have a ton of products then something is bound to go wrong. We experience a lot of users that go to checkout and they get the "circle of death" spinning loader that does not allow them to check out. It is an issue that happens now and then but too often than we would like and who knows how much money was lost due to that.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Research your company's or client's goals before deciding which platform to use for eCommerce. There are differences in each platform that will make a huge difference in accomplishing those goals.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We have more control with Magento websites. We custom code websites anyway so for our eCommerce clients, this is a great source as far as having more control compared to BigCommerce, Shopify, etc. It's definitely something you want to research thoroughly though because BigCommerce works better for some of our other clients for different purposes.

"Fully featured ecommerce that you can support yourself... to a point"

What do you like best?

Powerful, many advanced features and of course open source so no pesky monthly fees. Excellent multilingual and multistore support. A large pool of Magento experts around the world who can help. Some excellent themes available for purchase at a reasonable fee and a wide range of plugins to extent functionality.

What do you dislike?

Needs to run on a powerful webserver to get the required response times. Every Magento expert I turned to told me I needed hours and hours to do each task I asked. Was very frustrating and in the end I learned to do it myself although there is certainly need for a tech person in the background and available to answer questions and help out where needed. This is not a plug and play system that you can setup and just let run.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Make sure you have someone who can give you support at the terminal level and a fast server, preferably with something like Litespeed caching.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Ability to create multiple stores on one back end without having to replicate software and multiply the management tasks. Turned out that I could install and maintain this myself without too much effort so the overall cost to implement was relatively low. I bought a theme and a couple of modules and integrated with facebook pixel tracking, google adwords and yotpo reviews.

"Decent but Unwealdy"

What do you like best?

It's a great and versatile eCommerce platform, which gives plenty of flexibility and has support for a vast amount of features and products. Being open source, you have carte blanche to change whatever you want and are only limited by your skillset and imagination.

What do you dislike?

Although it is flexible and customisable, the Magento platform is overly complex and it's greatest strength - the huge support of third-party developers - is also it's greatest weakness. There is no central support and if Magento of any of its TP components break down, you are on your own.

It also becomes way too problematic if you have a large database. In our experience, a large MySQL database gives rise to a myriad of speed and indexing issues.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Have a good team of developers behind you and make sure you log every implementation and change to the original code, because with every update of issue, you will need to unpick and re-implement what you have done before.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

That being said, the ability to have a huge database and host the thing on whatever server you like, has been a boon for us in the past as there are no monthly subscription fees to pay and we have been able to use the site unchanged for the last 5 years.

However, due to switching developers mid-term, we have found that as the original developer did not keep a log of changes/additions, we are unable to update Magento as this will make the bespoke code unusable.

"Excellent platform for creating ecommerce sites for clients"

What do you like best?

The software is highly extensible if you are qualified. It's very powerful and flexible. With the right hosting in place it can also be very fast. The admin are is easily customizable without recreating the user experience for each new page. The filtering on admin grids is excellent.

What do you dislike?

Magento 2 is still pretty buggy. That has been frustrating during our first migrations. But it seems to be getting better with each new release. It can be slow if you don't have a good hosting environment.

Recommendations to others considering the product

My biggest recommendation is to not go cheap on the hosting. Get a good solid hosting environment managed by Magento experts. Hire a certified developer. Make sure you do all custom work in the proper way so that you can upgrade with less stress in the future.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Building ecommerce platforms for clients. We are able to solve their business problems since Magento allows us to spend more time working on their custom needs and our designers can focus on the theme designs.

"Magento Is Great For Building Highly Customized Online Stores"

What do you like best?

Magento's open source version is free to download install and customize., saving you money especially if you know a bit of html and php. Like all "open source" shopping carts, you own and control the complete code on your own hosting account, and are free to do whatever you'd like with it, change it in any way that you can image. Download other developers' "ad ons", read, learn, and understand many ways to customize your shopping cart website to your own liking.

What do you dislike?

The support for the open source version is lacking. Although the user base is very large, the quality of the user base comments and replies you get might not be as easy to obtain, understand, or replicate the exact same issue in the same way.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Use a template right from the start for a fast setup and install that already has the design you want.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Magento transforms my clients' brick and mortar retail stores into ecommerce websites with complete online purchasing and inventory.

"End of the Road for Self-Hosted E-commerce Solutions?"

What do you like best?

Clearly, as an e-commerce solution that you can configure and design to your heart's content, Magento Community edition has a lot to recommend it. There's a lot of plugins, wide support and resources available out there, and a lot of existing customers. To have a reasonably close to enterprise standalone e-commerce solution, it isn't terrible. It has a lot of decent features that check the box for most basic store needs.

What do you dislike?

Reporting is pretty basic and can't be customized in any way.

Using it as a self-hosted solution has its share of concerns including security and updates. No matter who you are a business, you are at risk of having your instance tolled and probed for weaknesses if you aren't 100% up to date. These days, the risk of being compromised is so great, you have to ask yourself if it's a good idea anymore to be using a solution that you have to host yourself, instead of a cloud solution.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We brought e-commerce online in a relatively short period of time and have kept it running quite successfully for a long time.

"Fantastic for control freaks and tekkies"

What do you like best?

Scalability.

Customisability.

Amount of third party integrations and modules.

Number of themes and templates.

What do you dislike?

Steep learning curve.

Now owned by eBay - makes me feel insecure as to the future of the open source model and the separation between ebay, paypal and their other interests.

Competition law issues and conflict of interests for ebay to own this sector as well as owning the worlds biggest marketplace - most magento shop owners and site operators are competing with ebay and ebay sellers - this is a serious issue.

We may be controlled by ebay and our successes dictated by their development of magento, which will inevitably be head to head in terms of priorities, when looking at the small traders.

Ebay could wipe out most competition for their marketplace if they later choose to bring magento community / open source model to an end. Thereby forcing online consumers to shop on ebay marketplace, and so ebay will benefit from commissions on sales there.

MARK MY WORDS - this will happen - and this is why they bought magento out.

This is precisely how large American corporations work - and how they succeed at dominating global industry.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Ease of use.

Administration requires complexity and knowledge and tech savvy users.

Not necessary for small shop owners who do not have IT skills or IT admin staff.

Overly complicated in most cases for such users.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Free access for the common man and everyday person ie no barriers to entry - to be able to compete with major companies, utilising highly scalable, well developed e-commerce software at no cost.

"The robust eCommerce experience"

What do you like best?

Very good working platform with one of the largest community. You can use it for almost everything in eCommerce as it is extremely customizable and extendable. There is an extension for almost everything you want. The new 2 version is also much better looking and optimised.

What do you dislike?

The main disadvantage comes from its main advantage: being too complex make it too clumsy. You need really a good hardware to make your store fast enough. Caching helps a lot, but there is room for improvement.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Think about developer if you plan customizations.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We sell online and use Magento for our online store. The biggest benefit for us is customization, extendability and integration with other systems.

"Immensely in depth program but hard to customize"

What do you like best?

I love how in depth this program is and how it seems like they thought of almost everything that you would need to use for an e-commerce business. The product structure is straight forward. Also helpful that I used this at more than one company and my experience with it helps when applying for jobs.

What do you dislike?

I loathe that they haven't figured out a better way to upload products or images. The import/export feature is horrible and not helpful. Unless you are versed in magento and have prior knowledge it is really hard to teach someone else how to use these features. The export of products is just useless and there is no feature to upload images which becomes tedious and time consuming.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

W are using them for our CMS as well as all ecommerce data for customers, orders, gift cards, promotional codes, product creation. It is nice to have all of this in one main dashboard that all customer service reps can use.

"Hands down best in features and scalability. "

What do you like best?

No matter how you look at it Magento is the most feature-rich out of the box and scalable platform there is on the market. You could spend weeks, countless hours, and thousands of dollars playing with the other platforms out there but in the end, they won't hold up to Magento when it's built right.

Almost limitless configurations, open source, tiered pricing groups, product scheduling, product staging & preview, grouped products, bundled products, single page dynamic checkout, full page caching, RMA, shipping, inventory management, and more right out of the box.

What do you dislike?

It does require a developer even if you're savvy enough to get it up and running on your own and you install and set up all your extensions you're going to run into what we call (conflicts), some people call bugs. That developer is going to come in handy and they're worth the money because they can get things fixed relatively quickly.

Recommendations to others considering the product

You should choose Magento if you are wanting a platform that can scale as your business grows. When you weigh out the pros, cons, and costs versus the other platforms you're going to come in cheaper using Magento. The majority of the other platforms on the market are SAAS based and thus and feature enhancements, improvements, or integrations are going to be extra and also SAAS. Remember that SAAS is for the life of the store, meaning as long as you host the store on a SAAS based platform such as Shopify, Big Commerce, Mivo, Demandware, etc, the more it's going to cost you in the long run.

Do your homework and I think you'll agree.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Content staging, product scheduling, B2B features, and the ability to run multiple domains/stores from one instance of Magento.

"Robust but complex"

What do you like best?

We like the versatility and open source nature of this product and have customized it with tools critical to the unique nature of our business. I like the versatility of the tax rules I can apply, as well as the detailed and customized way I can manage listing complex as well as simple products. I LOVE how Google responds to the format of this platform. I like the options around payment methods as well as shipping methods, which are critical to the way we do business. I also like the coupons and tools we can add to this platform to make the marketing fit our needs.

What do you dislike?

The security of a PHP site is not for the light of heart, and the vulnerabilities are many. I wish we had known more about this software sooner, and we would have built the site differently - using more attributes instead of custom code, Some of the modules we can buy are not wonderful, so I wish Magento did more to grade the quality of the modules out there. I don't expect you to exactly be Apple, but absolutely no grading or quality credentialing is a rocky road. I don't like HOW MANY FOLDERS THERE ARE. That's a runaway train and makes it hard on everyone.

Recommendations to others considering the product

big budget for development

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We run a rental service that ships, so customization is key. We have been able to make this work for our unique business needs with Magento, and find that the detailed tools are valuable to our rental business.

"Robust but heavy"

What do you like best?

Magento provides robust, powerful support for a variety of needs that the common merchant would require. Multi-store management, solid SEO support, import/export product management, and caching for performance support.

What do you dislike?

Magento is heavy - very heavy. Before you can even consider using Magento you will need to have your hosting provider and dedicated server picked. In addition to that, Magento relies very heavily on XML documents to manage its settings. As a PHP developer, I find this reliance on XML a perplexing choice when data formats such as JSON are much less verbose, and as a result, smaller. Even YAML would be a better choice.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Consider Bigcommerce if you have robust e-commerce needs.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I was involved with a company that relied solely on its Magento-powered web presence. Due to the huge catalog of products we were able to leverage Magento’s stability and SEO features to support the business financially.

"Powerful Solution for savvy users"

What do you like best?

Magento Open Source offers extensive configuration options and lots of cart functionality out of the box. Once configured you will find that the default themes and flows are adequate for pushing cart sales and directing your customer through the process to a successful transaction. I have also found that the cart runs very well on hardware spec that are less than recommended and lower cost cloud servers work well.

What do you dislike?

Theming, or even making small changes to the look and feel of the site require an extensive knowledge of web technologies. While updates and security patches are frequent, I have found that installing the patches to be a hassle with a high failure rate as well.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I have tried several big name products, both hosted and self-hosted, and can say that the value is definitely with Magento. Other products are easier to setup and initial implementation is faster, but benefits and long term use is much better on the Magento platform.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Provide a robust online shopping cart without the cost of a hosted solution.

"Powerful & reliable e-commerce solution"

What do you like best?

Magento biggest benefit is, it's an free open source and has a lot's of online communities and forums to help with lots of examples. Magento has lots of magento connects, themes and it's so vastly used platform that you'll get lots of developers for your customization needs.

Magento is best platform for small and mid sized e-commerce stores with lots of inbuilt features like detail reporting, product customization, checkout process, cart, coupons, gift cards, return & exchange etc.

It's the best platform for your ecommerce store.

What do you dislike?

If you're lacking technical skills, it's not good for you. You need somewhat technical skills to manage it or you need a technical person or team with PHP/MySQL expertise. Also you need a good server to run magento store, you cannot run it on shared server.

You will have to be very careful when an new version is released of a plugin. Sometimes the 3rd party plugins create problems because of version conflict.

If you have technical person in your team or if you've expertise in PHP/MySQL then this is the best platform for e-commerce store.

Recommendations to others considering the product

First read, understand and test it completely before going live. It takes time to learn but the end result is very satisfying if you have learn it.

Just make sure you have some technical person in your team with good server to sustain.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We're an e-commerce agency, we develop e-commerce store for our clients. We're using this platform and our customers are very satisfied with this platform. Best part is, it is highly customizable and has lots of 3rd party plugins and themes are available online.

"Magneto Help us a lot in developing great e-commerce stores for our clients"

What do you like best?

Magneto community edition is the best platform for small and mid sized segments, it has everything you need. It's a great platform which contain everything Customer management, customizable products, downloadable products, multi lang. support, multi store support, coupons, customizable checkout options etc.

Magento has thousands of Magneto connects, themes. It's very easy to customize it as per your needs with the helps of these plugins and themes.

It's highly customizable open source and best for e-commerce platform.

What do you dislike?

It is not the user friendly tool, if you lack technical skills. It's better if you have some Php/MySql expert in your team for customization. Sometimes the platform leaves you vulnerable to plugins incompatibilities when an new version is released. You also need at least VPS hosting, you can't survive on shared hosting for magento.

However, with proper knowledge of magneto if a very powerful open source for e-commerce store.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It's not recommended for very small stores who has less then 100 products, if you're mid sized store, go for it. It will cater every need of yours, but make sure to have a technical person in your team and a good server.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

"Magento open source experince"

What do you like best?

It offers both robustness and flexibility but just have a detailed requirement analysis first in place and with some platform studying. Also, there many ready built plugins available that can be used to fulfill your needs. For example, the marketplace has many plugins including digital marketing such as SEO, online advertising, email marketing and social. Also, you can find accounting and finance related plugins and user experience related tools as dozens of themes. To complete the cycle, you can check payment integration as PayPal.

What do you dislike?

Apart from both learning experience curve, I believe it is a good tool for e-commerce business. Also, it needs significant performance optimization. Either you pay premium support or be ready to invest a lot of time to do it yourself.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I recommend Magento to users who work on a large-scale project when you consider robustness and tailoring.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Flexibility to have tailored customizations. Either your own customization or with many available plugins, you can tailor according to your needs. I worked with a team and built an e-commerce platform with significant customization in the billing cycles.

"Powerful but clunky and high-maintenance"

What do you like best?

Magento has a lot of features, some great themes, and frankly makes a professional-looking ecommerce website that makes our company seem much bigger than it is.

What do you dislike?

Many of what you might consider basic features are only available as third-party plugins and while they may work great individually, they frequently don't play well together. If you do not have a dedicated developer, be prepared to pay a not-insignificant amount to hire someone to work on your site. If you only need a simple site, this won't apply to you, but then you also have no reason to use Magento when simpler, more stable products are available.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you need it, you need it. There doesn't seem to be anything as broadly configurable short of coding your own ecommerce system from scratch. That said, if you don't need it, avoid it. It's a headache.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We outgrew our previous ecommerce platform and we made the move to developing a Megento-based site. Our business has a wider range of products and services than most, and the smaller platforms were not configurable enough for our needs.

"Great for customization"

What do you like best?

Magento is a great software for big online business. You can easily get what you want to be in your website. No need to install too much plugins because it was already there, you just need to ON/OFF it, easy updating, uploading and execution of promos but ofcourse it really needs a skilled and knowledgeable person to handle this cause it was so complex.

What do you dislike?

"E-commerce Simplified and Made Beautiful"

What do you like best?

Magento is about is good as it gets for off the shelf e-commerce plat forms. The front end templates are robust and elegant and the backend UI is pleasure to work with. One gets the immediate feeling that great thought and planning went into making Magento a platform that just about anyone can easily adopt in their web presence. Under the hood Magento really shines as well, the MCV architecture along with a CLI tool (although more complex in version 2) is really a developers delight.

What do you dislike?

Sites can grow into huge platforms and file systems, thus some more robust backend file management tools would be very welcomed, although noting that a developer with decent bash scripting or powershell experience cant over come. I would like to see some more 3rd extensions for various LAMP/LEMP/IIS caching made available.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Consider developing your own theme from the ground up. In the long run The return on investment might be greater than using a commercial theme.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Rapid development, ease of use, and almost instant ROI. Many commercially themes and templates are available for rapid launch awith unique banding which is a good option to get started, but investment in development hours will be needed in the log run to produce a more unique and heavily branded UI/UX. Good new is the platform framework is ready to expand and grow when the owner is.

"Magento -- With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility"

What do you like best?

If you dream it, and have very good programmers, you can create it and make it so

What do you dislike?

You need programmers and seemingly every time something new is installed it requires customization. This causes conflicts and more development work. You definitely need a strong testing platform and you will have some down time on your live platform

"Extremely Powerful Ecommerce Solution"

What do you like best?

Magento is delivered as a fully functional webcart from the time you install it on your webhost. We were able to launch our first Magento store with very little engineering time, and the multitude of themes, extensions, and modules make it an extremely robust ecommerce solution. As an open source solution, you have full access to the codebase which is great for customizing the functionality of your site.

What do you dislike?

Unfortunately, the extensible nature of the platform leaves you vulnerable to module/extension incompatibilities and version lock when an new Magento version is released. You definitely want to have a Magento developer handy or be comfortable working with PHP and mySQL yourself to have long-term success with this platform.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We adopted Magento CE to build our ecommerce offering. As a distributor for various hardware manufacturers, our Magento-based store has definitely helped us extend our reach and gain many new customers.

Magento has everything baked into it: product management, customer administration, order management. We've been able to further extend the system with a third-party ERP solution to reduce the amount of time it takes to process orders. Due to our Magento solution, we can process payment and ship an in-stock order in about 10 minutes. Compared to traditional B2B/offline order processing, that alone is huge.

"Magento is nice for small businesses, but has many limitations"

What do you like best?

Out of the box Magento is pretty neat for a small business. It can set up your products and categories pretty easily, and makes it easy to add seo data like meta descriptions and keywords in a text box. No major knowledge of html is needed.

What do you dislike?

As a search analyst the search configuration is very limited. We were able to utilize the SOLR platform, but only by weighting attribute fields in a 1 - 5 basis. Also, there is no major thesaurus library, everything must be done on a per term basis. Same with URL redirects.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Only for small businesses that do not want too much customization. If you plan to customize, plan to have a dev team at the ready.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I did not work for the company before they had switched to this platform. I came from a company that used Oracle Endeca. Endeca had many more available options for the search world.

"Easy to use e-commerce platform"

What do you like best?

I like Magento because of its simplicity. e-commerce is one of the growing business and providing an open source software for such businesses, in itself is wonderful. Since Magento is open source (though it has paid version as well), it can easily be customized as per the needs. I think Magento is one of the fastest growing platforms in the e-commerce industry.

Magento has three different versions: Magento Go, Magento opensource and Magento Enterprise. One of the best features of Magento which makes it different from its competitors is its multistore functionality. So basically, if you sell two completely different variety of products, you can do it very easily with Magento. Everything from the backend to inventory management, logistics everything is under one roof.

Magento is also very good for search engine and very robust. You can customize it in a very customizable way.

What do you dislike?

Though Magento is a very powerful platform and comes with an opensource version also, it also has few issues as well and one of them is to set up Magento on a new server. It's quite tedious to set up Magento. I have faced some issues while setting it up but those were due to some additional entries in my host file. However, I think Magento should be able to solve these issues on its own.

Recommendations to others considering the product

I would certainly recommend Magento to everyone.

"Great at handling a large catalog, some frustrating aspects"

What do you like best?

We have a somewhat large catalog of products that can be hard to distinguish other than their specifications. Magento provides easily adjustable specifications (attributes) that can be used to help adjust in bulk or helpful for sorting and other website uses.

What do you dislike?

Search isn't as good as we would hope, cannot search CMS pages/blocks without purchasing an additional third-party tool. URL Rewrite can be a huge mess!

Recommendations to others considering the product

We found it useful due to its ability to sort and adjust attributes easily in bulk.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Created a great organized platform for our products on our main website.

"Magento 2 Lots of features, but difficult to develop for."

What do you like best?

I like that Magento 2 has a ton of features and allows you to have multiple stores and multiple carts.

What do you dislike?

The fact that it's very difficult to develop for. It takes a long time to actually learn and get a great understanding of how everything works.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Just note that if you're going to be developing for it, that you will have a lot of problems with setting it up and learning how to develop.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We needed to use it on a client site that wanted to have a shared cart across all their stores. It was one of the few options that gave us this ability.

"Too Complex, Poor Ecosystem"

What do you like best?

The capabilities for inventory management and shopping cart/catalog rules (promotions and discounts).

Order management seems good but we haven't used it too much (we proccess them throught another system). SEO seems pretty fine. It's a powerful system but maybe you don't need that much.

What do you dislike?

The complexity of the system. The ecosystem is poor: few plugins and extremely complex to make them work. Too expensive also if you want to find reliable alternatives.

Making changes is complex, Magento has 20,000 files and it's over Zend (PHP Framework). That makes changes too hard.

There are some templates but definitely it's not that there are too many options as in Woocommerce.

The system is pretty heavy so be ready to spend on resources for your server.

It seems like too much to me.

Recommendations to others considering the product

They say that Magento is for larger businesses.

For me, TLDR:

Pros:

- rules and promotions work nice

- cache implemented

- robust enough to scale (many features to manage high volumes. Magento Entreprise is available too for that)

- inventory management has many options for variations, bundles, etc.

Cons:

- Hard to grow. Marketplace is poor, few choices. Woocommerce is way better and quicker.

- Making changes to theme is too complex. Over 20,000 files in total. Forget about anything, Zend is painful.

- Too heavy, high server resources.

- User management (for customers) and checkout process sucks.

In the end, I wouldn't choose it again. I'll go with Woocommerce, powerful ecosystem, lightweight and easy to customize (in fact, we are migrating).

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are using it as an eCommerce for our company. We connected our API to Magento (not easy and we still have problems).

We needed to connect some third party plugins, very hard and prepare to suffer Magento pain. Random errors when installing plugins.

Making theme changes is long and complex. Definitely could have been easier.

"Horrible experience"

What do you like best?

Solves all the common retail problems - stores, products with variants, etc

What do you dislike?

The whole thing. Try to setup Magento 10 times, you'll get 6 different experiences, with different problems each time. The problem extends all the way even when developing it, some parts of the entities has repository API, some don't - resulting in spaghetti codes all around.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Unless your developers are absolutely sure that they want Magento, don't do it. The whole thing reeks of unsolvable bugs (forcing you to change the core, but then you can't publish the thing if you do it), poor support and just downright poor design decision. Absolutely hate Magento.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

e-commerce solution. The only good thing is I don't have a hard time setting up store, products, promotions, currency and all its relationship.

"Powerful & flexible ecommerce option"

What do you like best?

Magento Community Edition empowers any sized business to get online and sell. It is very powerful and flexible in terms of features that many shops will want for their online stores. Customer management, catalogs and products that can be customized with attributes, multi-store setup, coupons, campaigns, shipping, its all there. If any additional features are needed, plugins, or custom development can facilitate those.

What do you dislike?

This tool is not the best for very small shops with just a few products. It is also not the most user friendly tool for those who lack technical skills. I definitely recommend having a tech-savvy team member or partner for configurations, installation of plugins and any custom development needed. Business class hosting is also recommended, preferabbly VPS, dedicated, or cloud based hosting with CDN support.

Recommendations to others considering the product

For mid-sized stores, or stores that need flexible options and functionality, this is a great tool. Just make sure you have the tech support team and server to sustain.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Helping customers successfully run and manage various online stores.

"Great Tool For Small Businesses"

What do you like best?

The terrific functionality and ability to handle small to enterprise level stores make it an easy choice for most. The way that Magento CE handles and processes order is remarkable. The backend for the consumer is also very easy to use and I love the recurring subscription functionality. The API features cannot be beaten either.

What do you dislike?

It is not exactly the easiest software to use if you are not computer literate. I don't like how you cannot upgrade from 1.9 to 2.x. For a few of my clients who want to take advantage of this new functionality, I find myself having to remake these websites from scratch. I would also like to see an ease-of-use similar to Shopify and WooCommerce. I would also like to see an easier builder. Other small web design companies like ours who operate with smaller budgets would appreciate this.

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you are going to use Magento CE - make sure that you are using the newest version. Make sure if you buy a theme that it is compatible with the newest version of Magneto. Magento 1.9 is very difficult to use but the new version is much easier.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Magento CE has helped us (as designers and developers) design a good looking and flexible website for our clients. For my clients, Magento CE also helps establish a view of their margins and better establishes an ROI for the site design, maintenance, and marketing.

"Powerful, low acquisition cost but high technical proficiency required"

What do you like best?

Very powerful and expandable solution. There are numerous 3rd party add-ons to extend the already full feature set of the base software.

Lots of community and professional support options available.

What do you dislike?

Installation, configuration, maintenance and on-going security updates are non-trivial and require a fair bit of proficiency and maintenance.

Updating the software (security updates) could be much more automated to reduce administration.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Make sure you do your testing before implementation. I'd seriously look at one of the professional Magento hosts rather than either self-hosting or hosting on a general webhosting company. The specialist Magento hosts will assist in maintaining site security and reliability

"Magento Community Good Option but Not for Everyone"

What do you like best?

Fully customizable

Can run multiple stores within it

What do you dislike?

Costly to maintain for a smaller company

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you're a smaller company with not a lot of resources to use toward development and IT support then there may be better solutions. However, it is a great solution to set yourself up for scaling the business. Just keep in mind that you are not an IT professional who can manage the admin of Magento yourself it will be expensive. Have had to get help form IT with product upload problems, plug-in installation and trouble shooting, etc. It's typically not a once click setup when new features are added and the new plug-ins can effect other systems so you really need someone who keeps an overview perspective when adding and maintaining the site.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Over 100 variants of products not a problem in Magento. This is a Shopify limitation requiring work arounds and/or making it not an option.

Customized drop ship programming an option because open source

Various plug-ins for admin and customer experience. A good amount of options available for whatever our needs are.

"A powerful tool - but only for folks with powerful developers"

What do you like best?

If you run a multi-store with thousands of SKU"s - it's really your only bet. It's the only e-commerce platform that will not hold you back from your "what if's" (assuming, of course, you have the money to pay the developers to execute the "what if" dreams)

What do you dislike?

We've operated a multi-store Magento company for nearly 9 years. Unlike fine wine, it does not age well. With every update, every extension, every passing month - it begins to deteriorate or dysfunction. If one developer made a mistake in the base code 7 years ago - you'll feel it for years.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Don't make our mistakes: don't hire small developers that can't keep up: go with a powerhouse firm that can ask the gal/guy in the next cube if they're stuck. If I had a time machine: I'd hire better developers, but I'd still pick Magento.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

It's the only platform for multi-stores with thousands of SKU's - everybody's else requires we split our shops apart, pay per/shop bills, etc.

"Magento CE 1.9"

What do you like best?

Magento's biggest pro is it is open source, has a large help community and lots of examples available. It's open source architecture allows for a great deal of customization as needed.

What do you dislike?

The same open source nature of Magento also means there can be a lot of code conflicts from poor implementations of code, particularly as the number of third party modules used on a store increases, and lots of old examples from outdated documentation. However, with proper attention to detail Magento is a very powerful platform for an eCommerce site. I have not tested Magento 2 extensively to know if some of these issues are better in the new version.

"Like a jumbo jet cock pit. It can do everything, but it's complicated."

What do you like best?

The system feels robust and it's scalability is obvious. Although intimidating, the user interface is very easy to use once you get past the initial shock. Things just seem to make sene and are where you would expect to find them.

What do you dislike?

It is quite complicated and v1 now looks very out of date.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Support will soon end for V1, V2 looks good but I can't fully review it yet.

"Upgrading to Magento 2 not recommended"

What do you like best?

Magento 1 was easy to use and had a flexible theme and plugin management system. Although the caching system worked out well the search went

What do you dislike?

Magento 1: Although the caching system worked very well the search performed terribly with large amount of data. Solutions for this issue are rarely available.

Magento 2 is based on thousands of XML files gathered together which makes things complicated. The XML files create a large overhead wich requires the use of many compilers and caching. If you don't know the exact structure of the XML files and theme definitions very well the structure is not straight forward so you need much time to get very easy things done (like removing simple elements)

Recommendations to others considering the product

Do not use Magento2 - since Magento 1 worked well Magento 2 makes things more complicated and created a large overhead. The new admin is modern but not intuitive to our customers.

"Great Product To Help Get Me Into The Big Leagues of E-commerce"

What do you like best?

Free is good - of course there are other associated costs - but it's a great way to start.

What do you dislike?

I wish it was more user friendly and didn't rely on 'experts' so much - why can't they make a Magento that is more intuitive to use? this is the age of WIX and Shopify -

Recommendations to others considering the product

"Awesome"

What do you like best?

With over 250,000 merchants on board, Magento is one of the eCommerce industry’s most popular self-hosted platforms, and it isn’t hard to see why. Magento’s expansive feature set and complete customizability make it an excellent platform for merchants who have the resources to best implement advanced technology

What do you dislike?

There is a paid tier available for enterprise users, but at a basic level the software is free for you to use. Magento is used by massive retailers like Samsung and Nespresso, as well as countless small e-commerce operators, so it’s a serious contender for any business looking to make the move into online retail

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Currently, Magento comes in two versions: Magento Open Source (formerly Magento Community Edition), Magento Commerce (which is intended for enterprise level businesses with developers on hand). Not sure which to use

"Most customizable shopping cart platform"

What do you like best?

Very much developer friendly. A full packed powerhouse of a platform. Customizable in all sorts from the front end as well as backend. Easy to maintain and debug. Contains multiple store views for different languages. Every store view act as a separate website instead of just changing some variables in the base store.

What do you dislike?

A very much resource Intensive application. The user has to have technological skills in order to debug issues or has to have an in-house development team to maintain the webstore. The database structure is pretty complex as compared to the other shopping cart software in the market.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Consider this if you have a large number of features in mind to integrate into your webshop. You might be needing a development firm to maintain it but worth the effort. It is also future proof as compared to other platforms in the market, in terms of scalability, robustness as well as maintenance. A complete all-round solution to all your e-commerce requirements.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

if you are using Magento then you can implement any feature that you can think by creating custom plugins. All the e-commerce solutions from shipping to payments to ERP in one place doesn't matter how complex are these.

"Magento - It allows you to do anything, and has a very steep learning curve"

What do you like best?

Magento is very extensible. When we wanted to create a store that was capable of synchronizing with our CRM and product database Magento was a good choice. Magento can be difficult to learn, but after mastering the PHP based MVC and database driven model design, it can be used to solve most all needs of your business. Magento is very stable.

What do you dislike?

The learning curve of magento is extraordinary. At first, it seems quite impossible to find the 'meat and potatoes' of things. The software developments starts making sense after awhile, but be prepared to invest significant time learning how to do basic adjustments.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Magento can solve almost all ecommerce needs, at the high expense of development expertise.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Our e-commerce website needs to synchronize with our CRM, providing single sign on capability. Customers in magento need to be created automatically, registering the user and sending over address details automaticaly. By extending magento, we were able to accomplish this goal.

"Best CMS for e-commerce out there"

What do you like best?

Easy to use, HUNDREDS, if not thousands of free apps, not to mention the payed apps, which are really, really good. What's not to like? I've developed 6 e-commerce sites on this platform so far and I've always been amazed how easy it is to get from 0 to a premium e-shop, with basic programming knowledge. You can get an e-shop running in about 2-3 months, depending on skill, with less than 1000$. The cheapeste I could make was 50$, not including server costs!

What do you dislike?

Can be a bit tricky to master the programming side if you're building custom apps by yourself or trying to integrate an API. It requires a strong server if you have a lot of products. Sometimes the full page cache apps can be a pain to setup and might require some advance knowledge, but for small shops you can live without it.

Recommendations to others considering the product

Looking for a cheap alternative with hundreds, if not thousands of free apps? Magento is what you need.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Selling products to our customers was never easier. We build our last e-shop in less than 60 days, from idea to launch, giving us more time and money to think of marketing, sourcing and other startup issues that might have appeared.

"Great platform for flexibility and customization."

What do you like best?

I love that the community for Magento is so big. A lot of themes, extensions and upgrades that you can do to make any type of website work. Magento 2 is also a big step from 1.9 and offers a lot of speed increases. I use to do most of my stuff in WooCommerce but that only seemed to be good for companies with under 50 or so products. Once it was anything above that it seemed to get complicated managing products.

What do you dislike?

Size seems to still be an issue, so make sure and cache and use performance extensions to help. You also seem to need a lot more server / hosting power with Magento.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I realized I needed to be flexible with offering solutions to different customers. One size does not fit all. Magento helped me solve that problem and had a lot of functionality out of the box.

"Good product, less than perfect documentation "

What do you like best?

The setup process is pretty straight-forward. It did encounter some bumps that I had to just dive deep and figure out for myself as the documentation was poor.

I liked the order customization I received and the custom shipping and tracking options.

What do you dislike?

I believe the documentation was lacking. It looked more like a changelog and less like a manual.

I needed to navigate user forums to find help for basic issues. These basic ideas and issues could be included in a DOC file to make start-up easier and less daunting of a task for the end user. This delayed roll-out because I could not change a simple header bar..

Recommendations to others considering the product

Get help via websites and community forums and not from documentation.

Product placement on the website and order management. Magento has been great for this use.

"Magento has been a wonderful platform to grow our online business"

What do you like best?

I like the flexibility and product management aspects of Magento the most.

What do you dislike?

For Magento you should really have a developer on staff to properly execute your online store.
