What is Magento Open Source, and what problem is it built to solve?

Magento Open Source is an e-commerce platform used to build and manage online stores. Its flexibility lets businesses shape storefronts and commerce workflows around their needs, though that customization often calls for technical expertise.

What company sizes and industries is Magento Open Source the best fit for?

Magento Open Source has a strong presence among small businesses, with mid-market organizations also represented. Positive experiences span several industries, especially retail, software and IT, and apparel.

How long does it take to implement Magento Open Source across a team?

Implementation most commonly takes one to three months, though simpler launches can take less than a month and more involved projects can extend longer. The reported time-to-go-live ranges include:

What customer support options does Magento Open Source provide, and how do users find the overall support experience?

Magento Open Source is open source, and users often turn to its developer community, forums, and online resources for help. The support experience is mixed: community assistance can be useful, while official support and troubleshooting for platform or extension issues can feel limited.

What is the experience like for teams switching to Magento Open Source from another tool?

Switching to Magento Open Source has often been driven by the need for more flexibility, customization, and control than previous commerce platforms provided. Transitions from platforms such as Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix, and OpenCart have brought access to richer commerce features, more adaptable storefronts, and room to tailor workflows; the trade-off is a more demanding implementation and maintenance effort.

What features or capabilities could make Magento Open Source even more useful?

Magento Open Source could be more useful with simpler day-to-day administration and less dependence on developers for routine changes. Improvements users would value include:
  • Make common admin tasks, storefront edits, and product updates easier to manage without specialized technical knowledge.
  • Improve setup guidance and documentation so implementation and troubleshooting are more straightforward.
  • Strengthen extension compatibility and upgrade processes to reduce breakage and maintenance work.

Is Magento Open Source considered safe and secure for handling data?

Magento Open Source is described as having security features and protections, but keeping a store secure requires careful setup and ongoing technical attention. Users also raise concerns about vulnerabilities, patching, and the effects of extensions or updates, so security depends in part on how the store is configured and maintained.

"Full Control for Multi-Market E-commerce"
5/5
What do you like best about Magento Open Source?

What I like best about Magento Open Source is the level of control it provides for managing complex e-commerce operations. In my day-to-day work, features like catalog management, advanced pricing rules, and promotional configurations allow me to handle large product assortments efficiently across multiple markets.

The flexibility of the platform is one of its biggest strengths. It enables deep customization and seamless integration with external systems, which is essential when working with different partners and operational flows. While the learning curve can be steep, especially for non-technical users, this is balanced by the powerful capabilities it offers.

From a workflow perspective, Magento has significantly improved how we manage product launches, pricing updates, and customer experience. Once processes are well defined, it becomes a very robust and reliable tool.

In terms of value, Magento Open Source delivers strong ROI for businesses that require scalability and customization without the licensing costs of enterprise platforms. Its wide ecosystem of extensions and strong community support make it easier to scale and continuously adapt the platform as business needs evolve. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?

What I dislike about Magento Open Source is the complexity it introduces, especially for non-technical users. Many configurations, such as catalog rules, promotions, or integrations, require a deep understanding of the platform, which can slow down operations if the right expertise is not available.

Another challenge is the dependency on development resources for relatively simple changes. Tasks that should be more flexible from an operational perspective often require technical intervention, which can impact agility in fast-paced e-commerce environments.

Additionally, the onboarding process and documentation can feel overwhelming, particularly for new users. While the community is strong, finding clear and structured guidance is not always straightforward.

Improving the user experience in the admin panel, simplifying common workflows, and reducing the reliance on development for day-to-day operations would significantly enhance the platform’s usability without compromising its powerful capabilities. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Massive Extension Ecosystem Backed by an Active Community"
4/5
What do you like best about Magento Open Source?

The massive ecosystem of third-party extensions and active community support means we rarely have to build complex features like custom payment gateways, ERP connectors, or CRM integrations entirely from scratch. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?

The platform’s complex architecture requires specialized, highly experienced developers to build, maintain, and upgrade. Simple customizations often demand significant time and deep technical knowledge of Magento's framework. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Deep B2B Customization and Control, but Extensions Can Hurt Performance and Cost"
3.5/5
What do you like best about Magento Open Source?

deeper customization of storefronts logic, checkout, and pricing, and backend workflows. Ui/UX is also very customizable. Better to work with B2B, more controle on hosting and Database. Less constraints on platform level rules. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?

It gets quickly very expensive since the base product does not offer much performance. Depending on how many extensions you use, it slows down the performance of the website. open source as now support, but you can find a lot of tutorials. AI integration is only available with extensions. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Flexible Custom Modules and Themes, but Magento 2.4 Setup Takes Patience"
3.5/5
What do you like best about Magento Open Source?

As a developer, I really appreciate being able to create my own custom modules to generate API endpoints. You can also design your own UI/UX theme from scratch, or build on ready-built templates. The use of elastic search improves search performance, and you can buy inexpensive modules for lifetime use. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?

Magento setup 2.4 is a bit complicated at first. you may require several tries to setup it up properly. A lot more helpful guides online compare to the official documents. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Flexible Yet Costly and Complicated to Maintain"
2.5/5
What do you like best about Magento Open Source?

I used Magento Open Source to host and run my e-commerce store for four years. I found it to be a packaged backend with a very robust feature list and full customization. I liked the price and the fully customizable features that allowed us to make our store look however we wanted. We were able to do things like create a custom loyalty points app and other customizations that you would generally purchase an app for. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?

The general upkeep of Magento caused us to leave. The issue that I have with Magento is that you need a developer on staff to be able to make changes and fix issues or you need to hire a developer a la carte. Overall, it became more expensive to use. First of all, we needed hosting off-site using a different provider, and a lot of the time you are managing a handshake between two services, and it sometimes does not work. Also, issues would arise like a broken link or banner missing. Because of the heavy code aspect of Magento, these issues were not able to be resolved ourselves. It was nowhere near as easy as Shopify - we required an onboarding team and marketing company to handle the setup. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"A Financial Vampire: How Magento Repeatedly Nearly Bankrupted Our Small Business"
0/5
What do you like best about Magento Open Source?

The thing I like best about Magento Open Source is that we are finally moving away from it. The absolute highlight of our entire experience with this platform is the upcoming date when we officially migrate to Shopify. Knowing that we will never have to deal with Magento or Adobe Commerce ever again is the only positive feeling I have regarding the software. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Magento Open Source?

I dislike almost everything. It is a catastrophic drain on resources, acting like a blood-thirsty vampire that has nearly killed our business several times. We have been trapped in a cycle of never-ending technical problems and unreliable "security patches" that are both mandatory and ridiculously expensive.

These updates frequently break existing functionality, creating a "quicksand" effect where you are constantly paying developers to fix things that shouldn't have broken in the first place. The architecture is needlessly complex, seemingly designed to maximize billable hours for agencies rather than providing a stable environment for a merchant.
