I think one thing I have been wanting, and the Ai tool has partially addressed this, is to be able to set rules for specific account codes rather than just a supplier. For example, if an expense needs coding to Directors Loan Account, I'd love the VAT to default to No VAT. For an accounting practice, what I like most about Dext is that it pushes document collection and data-entry work upstream—so it’s handled before the bookkeeping even reaches your accounting software.

The biggest benefits for me are that receipt and invoice capture is straightforward: clients can photograph, email, or upload documents, instead of sending over a messy pile of PDFs and paper receipts. Dext then extracts key details like the supplier, date, invoice number, tax, and amounts automatically.

I also find the supplier rules and auto-publish features really useful. Once recurring vendors are mapped correctly, Dext can automatically apply the right account, tax treatment, and other coding, and then publish the transactions.

Finally, the Xero integration is excellent, and it’s probably the biggest advantage for a firm already using Xero. Dext can push both the source document and the transaction information directly into Xero, so the receipt ends up attached to the accounting entry rather than being stored separately. For an accounting firm, the main things I dislike about Dext are the cost and the way the limits have changed. The price can be difficult to justify, especially for smaller or low-volume clients. I like how easy it is to get documents across and how efficient the processing is. Clients can send or upload documents from wherever they are, so they don’t have to drop them off or rely on the post. It takes geography, time, and some costs out of the equation, helps us capture information more timely and in greater quantity, and reduces lost documents. I like that Dext automatically extracts receipt and invoice data quickly and accurately, which saves me a lot of time on manual entry. I also appreciate that it integrates directly with QBO, since that’s the main bookkeeping software we use at our firm, so it fits smoothly into our existing workflow. The main downside with Dext is how it handles Canadian taxes in its exportable reports, particularly GST and PST. Most of the Dext reports we use don’t differentiate between the two taxes, and if we need to adjust the amount for one of them after posting—such as reducing the GST ITCs for meals—we have to go back to the original receipt. The integrations between Dext and other third party apps (not accounting legers) is blocked for certain fields, such as product and services. Dext has changed the way accountants and business owners alike record and manage their expenditure. The app allows on the go capture of expenditure and is easy to show clients how to use. The app has very high accuracy levels using AI and data capture technology which reduces manual entry and saves time for all users. The downside of using Dext is it is another app to train clients on in addition to the accounting platform, however we sell this to clients as Dext is used alongside Xero. The pricing structure sometimes needs to be reworked, it has been through a lot of variations on how it is prcied. but as an accoutant customer, selling the product on to a client, this should be straigthforward for us to buy in bulk.

I love the functionality and how easy it is to use Dext. Their support team is incredible, and they're always there to help, offering training calls with your subscription, which is a big plus. Managing subscription packages is straightforward, and I find it fairly affordable for what it provides. I also appreciate being able to submit feature requests that other users can like, leading to the development of features that truly address client needs. I'm impressed with their integration with QuickBooks Online, which works fantastically. Dext University offers great training resources and webinars, which are incredible as well. I absolutely love the ability to extract bank statements into line items and upload them into QuickBooks bank feed. Mixed-language documents can cause extraction errors, particularly when invoices contain multiple languages, Vendor names and descriptions may be interpreted incorrectly, especially with accents, special characters, or unfamiliar terminology, The same receipt or invoice can occasionally be submitted more than once, requiring additional checks. its AI function can sometimes misinterpret transaction details or suggest incorrect coding, so the information still needs to be carefully reviewed by a bookkeeper rather than relying entirely on the automation Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

In the Dext Approvals section, there isn’t an easy way to see which items have been approved, who approved them, and related details. Once something is approved, it just moves into the Published section under costs, which isn’t very helpful for tracking approvals. There also doesn’t seem to be a straightforward way to backtrack and review the approval audit trail within Dext.
