"Mostly". **What do you dislike about Avalara?** They discontinued their small business plan resulting in us going from about $3k a year to nearly $15k a year. No ramp up, no discussion, no nothing - just here is your 5X increase. Not only time, but gives me less anxiety about making sure our filings are submitted in time. We currently use Avalara with an integration to SaaSOptics (Maxio) which streamlines much of the reporting between billing and fiing. **What do you dislike about Avalara?** There are times when I setup a new juridictioin only to find out I need to continue another step in the process to actually automate filings. It's not the most intuitive process within the UI, and I've heard that others have experienced the same. However, with that said, I've just had to learn to add that part to my personal workflow. **What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?** With the recent sales tax changes, I don't think I would be able to manage the filings and reporting without Avalara's integration with our billing system. I've had very few issues since implementing Avalara five years ago and have to say that those issues stemmed from our own mistakes. Occasionally, the automations built into our platforms like NetSuite will de-sync, and sales invoices will generate without sales tax; this is an easy fix, but sometimes it happens without any warning. There are some teams within the company that are very good. **What do you dislike about Avalara?** Avalara (in our case we used mostly Avatax) is an amalgam of acquired software that does not work well together. There are regular technical issues. But the worst part is the customer support and incompetence among the people you have to interact with regularly. Anytime you contact support they put all the burden on you. Everyone is just following a script and it is hard to find someone who actually thinks about your issue. Their systems are manual and antiquated and the usability of their websites is very poor. And because they cobbled together pieces from multiple tools and products, there is no single place to log in and get to everything you need, the naming conventions are inconsistent, the site fails and gives errors constantly, and the user has to come up with their own ways to find an navigate. The craziest issue has been that one of their teams can't seem to consistently charge my card or bank account and I can't even get their attention to fix this issue. I've never had to work so hard to pay a company in my life. The ignored repeated messages in the support case and then finally just closed the case without responding. Now I am fearing that they will stop filing my returns for non-payment. They are simply incompetent in certain areas of the company. In other areas, they can be very impressive. We began on the TrustFile product, which worked for our needs (accountant filing using Avalara summaries). With ZERO warning, Avalara sunset the TrustFile product and forced a completely new product on users, requiring complete setup of all marketplace connections. The product functions very differently from the previous and we are currently unable to even get reports for filings. There are many errors that prompt to contact support. Utilizing Avalara support only increased the frustration -- overseas support with a script and a host of links that we've already reviewed (hence the need for support!). We have been on an esclation "pathway" for more than two weeks now with zero responses. The only company that has a tax app that Restrict Content Pro uses. This company may be great for larger companies, but not for small companies. And the connector for Restrict Content Pro does not work properly with Avalara even after six months. I cannot take orders overseas, and the tax calculation is wrong. Avalara says it is the connector that is the problem, not them. **What do you dislike about Avalara?** The app is not working correctly. I have not been able to take any sales outside the US for a month. I contacted support and they could not help. They referred me to my account manager and so far I have heard nothing. I am paying a lot of money for something that isn't working correctly, and it makes me really mad because they are charging me for the support they aren't able to provide. I use another tax collection program on another website that is working great. I have had no problems with it. This company doesn't seem to care or doesn't know how to fix my issues or even who can help me with this. (Update) - After six months of complaints, they have refunded the support part of my bill which I wasn't able to use because of the defective connector after giving a poor review on this website. They seem to be motivated by poor reviews, but it would have been better if they took complaints seriously before the bad reviews. I'm not sure what my account manager's role is in this company. Another problem with this app is that they don't let you know how many transactions you have for each state until you are reaching a taxable amount. This is a problem if you have more than one website and have to keep track of both. You should be able to know exactly how many transactions for each state at all times. I decided to go with a different format and cancel my Avalara subscription. This company makes you pay for the full year even if you don't use it. You are trapped into paying the complete year, not only that they have automatic renewal. The contract says you have to contact them in writing 90 days before your expiration or they will charge you for another year. I tried calling them to ask where I can send my letter but the person I talked to would not give me a physical address. She said I had to talk to my account manger. I explained that my account manger does not reply to my emails or my phones call. She said she would start a case and send him an email. She wanted me to reply to the email she sent about starting a case. I asked why? and she didn't really say why. I told her I wanted to send a certified letter saying I didn't want to renew and that I needed a physical address. She wouldn't give it to me. It seems like if you require a letter to cancel your subscription, they ought to be able to give you a mailing address, and not waste your time. (Update) - after working with my web app people who created the connector for six months, I still am not collecting the correct tax and can still not take orders overseas, anywhere outside the US and Canada.
