It provides us with address, jurisdiction, and tax rate information that we can compare against SAP. TaxJar is valuable because it helps us double-check our SAP tax setup by validating the ship-to address, confirming the correct city/county/state jurisdiction, and showing the tax rate breakdown. This allows us to identify incorrect tax codes, rate mismatches, missing rates, or addresses that require manual review. Although it’s not perfect every time, it has been very useful for our sales tax validation process, especially for checking addresses, jurisdictions, and rates against what we have in SAP. I would recommend it for these reasons. **What do you dislike about TaxJar?** TaxJar works well overall, but it is not perfect every time. Sometimes we still need to manually review results when there is a missing rate, a rate mismatch, or an address that does not validate clearly. I think TaxJar could improve by making the results clearer when something needs manual review. It's great that we're able to use the API to automatically calculate taxes and help validate addresses, which is huge for my gifting business. Easy to Use but Lacks Certain Features **Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Verified User in Retail | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.) **Reviewed Date:** November 20, 2020 **What do you like best about TaxJar?** It is a very simple platform, the interface is user friendly, and allows you to get things done fairly fast. They are constantly updating it with new features, and they have easy to follow tutorials when you want to get things down by yourself. The interface is pretty easy to handle without much room for doubt or questions. **What do you dislike about TaxJar?** It does not allow for customization to the extent needed. Not all businesses are subject to the same sales tax rules in every states. They don't have options to exclude yourself from certain taxes like the B&O tax in WA when using their automatic filing system. Until recently you could not change if shipping was taxable or not based on your particular business situation. They also don't fully integrate with Shopify, meaning they can take the information from Shopify, but they are not the ones calculating the sales tax at checkout, Shopify does, and Shopify does wrong a lot because they use zip codes instead of addresses. Also, when doing refunds, more often than not tax jar records them wrongly, so I have to download the file, fix it manually, and re upload it. Not very friendly. Also, the refund ID is different than the transaction ID which makes it harder to find the original transaction to then go to Shopify and see how the refund was done. Their customer service is good but slow, too slow sometimes given that some things are tax sensitive. They only solve one issue of the problem, calculating taxes right, but the other half, having the filing done correctly, I can´t do it, because their system makes me over pay for taxes due to the lack of customization and exemptions I can apply if I file on my own. **Recommendations to others considering TaxJar:** Understand that their automatic filing might make you pay more than you should and that refunds are not always correctly logged. Also, support is slow, not nearly as fast as one would want for a tax company. **What problems is TaxJar solving and how is that benefiting you?** I am getting an accurate amount of what I owe in sales tax to different states, which is a big issue for us since we sell to all 50 states. Avalara is the more commonly used system, but having used both extensively, I believe TaxJar is the better solution. **What problems is TaxJar solving and how is that benefiting you?** TaxJar syncs with all e-commerce sales platforms and your accounting system, and provides state-by-state sales tax reports according to your filing frequencies. It keeps track of what is due when, and for an additional fee it can even do the filings for you. Furthermore, it keeps up with any changes states make to sales tax (down to a county & city level), which are regular. The monthly reports are outlined in the way the state requests the information which is a plus. **What problems is TaxJar solving and how is that benefiting you?** Tax Jar integrates to our Shopify store and gives us the ability to file our monthly sales tax in states which we have established nexus as a remote seller. It has all of the info in one location. It clearly breaks down which states are marketplace states and which ones aren't so you can keep that straight. You also have the option of automating the task of filing with the state and letting TaxJar do it for you. **What do you dislike about TaxJar?** The service itself is a little pricing for some folks so you have to assess if it's worth it for you and your business. It's well worth the time savings for me. It is also a little misleading that the filing automation is included in the monthly cost, when in reality it is a per filing charge under most plans. **What problems is TaxJar solving and how is that benefiting you?** To put it simply, TaxJar handles my Sales Tax filing for both Amazon FBA and eBay. It's quite easy to setup new states. I previously filed our sales tax manually which was always a pain in the backside. Another upside is that it gave me the option to file manually or use their services, and that they pulled all of my data—QUICKLY! to tell me where to get licensed and the depth they go into with sales down to the gradual level (helps me figure out localized taxes when you know exactly to what city and state your stuff shipped). **What do you dislike about TaxJar?** Only downside about Taxjar is that the Autofile costs $100 per state, I did like the free Autofile offer, but...it’s more for people with larger-scale businesses. If TaxJar is reporting lower revenues there should be an Autofile plan that makes more sense and scales based on the volume of people’s sales. Another thing I’d say is the least helpful about TaxJar is the fact that counties are not shown for individual sales all the time, so I have to Google what county a certain city is in. **Recommendations to others considering TaxJar:** Seriously consider this for any electronic business. You can even use it for local business, if you do manual entries. What I’d recommend is to get your licenses and accounts set up as quickly as possible no matter what volume you anticipate, because sometimes you’ll have to file back taxes and some states will charge huge penalties for this. **What problems is TaxJar solving and how is that benefiting you?** The major problem I’m solving is figuring out what sales are taxable and what are not. Taxjar knows exactly what is exempt and what isn’t, therefore allowing me not only to not overcharge customer unnecessarily, but also to make sure that I don’t pay more than I actually collected. It’s also very helpful in calculating the state discount for filing on time, although it does not always relate this information in its calculation. ### 25. You need to hire a third-party service or do it yourself. I wish they could do it in-house and set up Autofile. Taxjar also doesnt easily display the information you need to file returns on your own, its all there but you need to transcribe it to the sales tax forms if you dont use Autofile. They also offer automatic filing options for a reasonable fee, but I have not tried that feature yet. **What do you dislike about TaxJar?** Not many complaints about it, maybe the fact that once an order enters the Sync Queue it doesn't sync right away. I believe there must be some type of interval when TaxJar initiates a sync, so I just leave and come back later and the sync is finished. The syncing happens automatically, so it is not usually an issue. Doing an autofile myself for zero sales take sme about 3 min, and paying $25 or more for this service to do it automatically (on top of the membership cost) is very expensive. **Recommendations to others considering TaxJar:** My best recommendation to other users is to be aware that there is a lot of research that needs to be done in order to fully understand sales taxes and how to automate them using taxjar. Not using taxjar is a NIGHTMARE, so I really don't know how can I do it without it. **What problems is TaxJar solving and how is that benefiting you?** The best solution I have found is the fact that taxjar keeps track of all the sales tax rules and keep you updated on everything. This is the best solution I have found so far (besides the fact that I no longer have to file every single state and keep track of this which takes a lot fo my valiuable time.) ### 45. We had to do it manually for a few times at first. There's also no way to get tax-exempt sales from Shopify so those need to be tagged manually. I'd recommend in a heartbeat. First is the obvious handling of our sales tax payments. There's no way we would be able to dedicate the hours needed to remit the tax to every state/county/street. It's just insane it was all setup that way. 2nd, are the nice apps/plugins for our ecommerce sites to calculate the tax rates. Works very well. **What do you dislike about TaxJar?** Not much that I can think of. Seems to work well. **Recommendations to others considering TaxJar:** You may have to bug support a couple times if you need to get a hold of them. Thankfully it's pretty rare I ever need to get in tough with a human.
