What do you like best?

I had personally used Apache Solr in the enterprise web application development which is basically written in java. Besides that, the Apache Solr is also written in java. It is very easy to use and very easy to understand. The main features provided by the Apache Solr, for example, full-text search, real-time indexing, dynamic clustering, database integration, rich document handling and, NoSQL features. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

The Apache Solr is an average tool use for document indexing, which can be used for searching and data retrieval. But, I would like to suggest some areas of improvement needed in this tool, for example, solr tool is a bit complex. The naive user facing difficulties in understanding the basics of this tool and also hard to implement in other computer languages. support is very slow. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

I recommend other please use elastic search. if you want faster deployment, ready to live with a lesser grain of control. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

With the help of this tool, we can optimize are applications search engine by using search indexer techniques. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

not happy that there is no inbuilt javascript library or a datagrid that can interface with solr and search say around 10 million records. solr is for faster retrival, something on the lines of datatable js library would help.this grid shoukd be available as a plugin. A very easy configuration and implementation. Good support with both RDMS like Oracle and NoSQL like Mongo DB. Great way to support type ahead search and one field search in application/product. Very efficient. Support of multi-datasource at a time from one Solr component. Good Solr client APIs for Java developers. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

it is very easy and simple to access its data via REST API. The flexibility in adjusting the query in terms of boosting, faceting and more is very useful. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

It would be good to handle authentication natively in an enterprise scale. Currently it has to be wrapped by another service that does authentication. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

It is used whenever high and large data volume needs to be filtered and classified for search and filtering.Hence this is very poweful tool to be used . Alternative tools like elastic search can also be used and utilised in multiple search engine across the organisation whenever there is need to search on large volume of data. Hence it becomes essential to deploy , handy , quick and light weight tool . I would recommend this tool for all the organisation which is looking for easy search engine on high volume of data. This is big deal when performance is critical for frontend application across any organisation Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

it is powerful search engine to serve large data of information which is best used when quick search results are requested by the frontend system Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Solr is designed from th groud up for scalability. If you are launching a search product and expect demand to grow this is an excellent option. The support community is also excellent. One of the best Open Source projects out there. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

For some tasks working with Solr requries customization beyond what is needed with commercial products. Solr lacks some data filters that commercial rpoducts offer. Entity extraction is basic. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best?

Solr is a very powerful, very flexible search engine. It is very fast and stable when configured correctly. Solr allows you to build your own custom request handlers and allows you to import data from pretty much any datasource. It is extendible, allowing you write your own plugins/importers to expand the built-in functionality. It's performance, scalability, and extendability make it a solid choice for powering real-time searches. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

At least with version 4.3-4.10, the documentation for Solr was very lacking, and it is difficult to find help with things. There are a lot of features, particularly in your configurations, that can take a bit to understand and get setup correctly. There has been a lot of guesswork in figuring out some of these features, and it seems like there is a lot that could be better documented to help identify where certain things can be used. Dealing with Zookeeper can also be a hassle. Updating the configs through Zookeeper has not been the most straightforward thing. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

If you do not have a search service and are relying on direct database reads for your searches, I'd highly recommend looking into using Solr for your search platform. Solr provides a lot of different ways to parse your search input and ways of improving your consumers' search experience. Newer versions of Solr (5, 6) are greatly improved and easier to get going with, along with better documentation, and are highly recommended. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Solr provides nearly all of the search logic for our products. Our dataset is fairly large, and Solr handles this very effectively. There have been some unique challenges in setting it up to take advantage of all that Solr has to offer, but it provides a very good search engine that works for us and our users. What do you like best?

Solr is a very quick and easy way to search for keywords within a document, the ability to add weightings to search terms to increase the outcome of search relevance gives it great flexibility.

It has a great user interface to be able to search your data and create your search query, as well as check the status of the server and cache.

It was easy to hook this search into our code base, using the search url Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

The way you index the data to Solr could be improved, it has a document feeder built in but isn't the easiest to use and is recommended to not be used in a production environment, although we have done this in the past. Which means a separate application needs to be written to insert your data.

Creating a SOLR cloud isn't as straight forward as it could be, as it needs to use Zookeeper, which means an additional server/service to maintain, other similar search products do not require this. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Making the switch was relatively easy task and the increase on performance was well worth it. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We needed to improve the relevance and performance of our existing search, and by using SOLR did both of these with the added benefit of reducing the load on our Oracle Database. We improved our relevance and customers immediately noticed the difference. That was with the 'out-of'the'box' settings, we can see how this can be improved further. What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are using it in conjunction with Cassandra for doing various queries against our large datasets. It allows us to write queries on the dataset to inspect our data in various ways that is often hard to do in Cassandra alone. This has saved us time and thusly money. It works, it's fast and very stable. It's on top of Lucene which is pretty much the only open source solid search software available. SOLR is tied in with some hadoop distributions. It works and once you understand SOLR and LUCENE you are good. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike?

Between Solr and ElasticSearch, there is a constant struggle to pick the best one. ElasticSearch is part of ELK and ties in well with LogStash and Kibana which makes it great for logs and big data stuff. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We use SOLR for two difficult business challenges:

* Type ahead search. The application needs to build a short list of match words based on users input as they typing into a search field. The search field is unified search field, that means multiple data types to be searched. For example, the field can be built for search a person. As an user typing, front end client sends the partial input to SOLR to search person's first name, last name, phonetic and spelling variation of the names, social security number, bank account number, application IDs and so on. If an user typing first two letters of name "Mike" The search needs to return a list of matching words before user typing the third letter "k". The match word can be Mike, Micheal, McMillan or a system ID of MI12345.

* Record reconciliation. The application has data feeds from various data source and data needs to be annotated and cross reference to each other. One example is using SOLR to build a ranking system to identify the like-hood of two persons from two data sources are the same person in real world, based on social security number, name, gender, birthday, address, credit card number and so on. The data source may contain one or more above attributes for person identification.

SOLR enable us to build customizable search function quickly that perform and scale well. We had extensive research on other technologies, such as database text indexing and google search but found SOLR is the best match for our needs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
