I think it is silly that sometimes certain screens get locked by other users, even though they are not in the screen. Also the fact that we cannot use spaces in invoice numbers is forcing us to change invoice numbers that vendors send us which is not proper. When you have an issue it can take several days for it to be fixed. **What problems is Aderant Expert solving and how is that benefiting you?** Aderant Expert is solving imaging for our team. We are able to go back later and look at the image and know what it is we did and why. ### 2. There have been some good and bad with Aderant, but I feel like that is all software. I like that Aderant auto populates information as you type in certain fields which makes the data entry time go down and that you can attach images to your invoices and payments so all information can be in one place. **What do you dislike about Aderant Expert?** There are a lot of glitches and sometimes things get stuck where you have to contact support to fix it as there is no way to fix it yourself. I think the software is good for billing but it's sometimes a lot of work to get something fixed through support. Also reports take a long time to run in Appshell. We have to run monthly aging reports and it can take hours to get it done. **What problems is Aderant Expert solving and how is that benefiting you?** They are constantly doing upgrades but currently I have not seen any that benefit Accounts Payable. I have only been a user for a little over a year though, so I'm excited to see how it grows and changes. ### 3. It is a very confusing way to create bills. **What do you dislike about Aderant Expert?** Where do I begin! The system is not user friendly. I have worked in Legal Billing for over 10 years and have worked with a few billing systems. EA Pro is by far the most complicated system to understand. I don't know if it was the product or the people training, but when you are being shown a new system, they should have a complete knowledge of the system. It was not "cut and dry" training and that is a big part of the problem. I could not follow the training at all and it was a very frustrating when you are trying to learn a system and the trainers do not have a good way of explaining. We actually started learning one system that did not include E-billing and they had to start all over again!! **What problems is Aderant Expert solving and how is that benefiting you?** The firm I work for just converted to Aderant Expert and so far, I do not see any benefits. ### 6. The user interface is troublesome to use, unpredictable, inconsistent, and graphically hard to read and navigate. The elements on the screen don't respond to user input in real time, leading to errors. Choice lists are slow to appear, and selecting list items from the first few characters can be tough without switching constantly from the keyboard to the mouse and back to the keyboard -- lots of wasted input. Window maximizing/resizing behaves erratically, and on some screens, text input runs invisibly off the side of the screen. Users have minimal control over the appearance of the screen, and the as-supplied font face, size, and color is a chore to read -- maybe attractive to a designer but a real penance for a user. The tabs/ribbons with commands are not intuitive, are conceptually inconsistent ,and result in unpredictable consequences. Space on the screen is used inefficiently, leaving a lot of unusable screen real estate, and forcing a user to have to waste time scrolling and repositioning the insertion point. There is a lot of distracting screen animation (e.g., highlighting when the mouse pointer moves, color changes when you enter a field, puzzling color coding of fields). Overall, among the worst of my user experiences in 46 years as a power user. **What problems is Aderant Expert solving and how is that benefiting you?** I'm a practicing attorney. We use Aderant for time entry, billing, and accounting. I, personally, have realized no benefits; Aderant saps my productivity. My firm has realized some back end benefits (those functions apparently work), and when we went to Aderant in the first place, we had completely outgrown our prior time, billing, and accounting applications. ### 15. And, it flags in red when you enter a word it does not recognize. **What do you dislike about Aderant Expert?** Sometimes if you make an error, it puts an time entry in the "incomplete" section and you can't figure out what you did wrong. Product teams are open to customer feedback and provide opportunities for direct input into the development of new upgrades/applications. **What do you dislike about Aderant Expert?** Deployment, upgrading, and customization of the applications built on the new framework is still far more complex than it should be. Support and professional services teams are often understaffed, especially in regards to cases involving the newer applications. **Recommendations to others considering Aderant Expert:** Stick to the "out of the box" versions of the software as much as possible unless you have dedicated developers that are able to maintain the customizations specific to your environment. Luckily, Aderant has become more keenly aware of this problem and addressing it via their Design Studio suite. **What problems is Aderant Expert solving and how is that benefiting you?** Legal time and billing solution. We've realized efficiency gains through use of the Aderant workflow solution. ### 17. I really wish there were 40 characters worth of positive feedback I could give, but unfortunately there aren't. **What do you dislike about Aderant Expert?** 1) The inability to have multiple screens open simultaneously, 2) The "Comments" screen set up is horrible, with tiny font that is unable to enlarge and very difficult to read. 3) Fields from customized settlement screens do not merge properly in form letters. 4) We had to wait over a month to have the ability to sort defendants alphabetically. After we were able to see the names and not random numbers. 5) Myriad data was transferred incorrectly - tens of thousands of claim numbers were deleted from settlement screens making it impossible to run certain reports. 6) Some clients transferred over as both dead and alive; tens of thousands of contacts were not transferred or associated to their proper client; 7) It was determined by Aderant executives to link all the missing contacts to only 2 clients (instead of their proper connections) thus crashing the system every time anyone tries to access the files of those 2 clients. 8) Almost 2 months in and we still do not have a bulk post tool. 9) Almost 2 months in and we still cannot run proper defendant reports. 10) All emails were transferred in as Word documents. 11) Every time one issue is fixed, another one is created. 12) Almost all of our daily tasks require multiple steps - Not very user friendly. 13) Users with similar names have their IDs mixed up. 14) The Summary page offers no vital information and is totally useless. 15) We still cannot mass merge form letters or bulk post data into customized screens. 16) The only "reminder" for "TO-DO" items is that the font turns red - no alarm, no pop up or anything. 17) The only way to print out work histories is to export into excel. The headers are the coding for the names in the screen rendering them almost completely useless. It does not include any personal data - not even their name. **Recommendations to others considering Aderant Expert:** Don't do it! Maybe it would be better for smaller firms that have a type of law that each plaintiff has only one defendant - NOT MASS TORT. However for our department's purposes it is utterly useless. **What problems is Aderant Expert solving and how is that benefiting you?** After 2 months there have been no problems solved. Just created and compounded. New problems are appearing every day. Productivity and morale in our Department has hit an all-time low. Everyone is constantly angry and frustrated. ### 18. Sometime you'll get up to go for a coffee, or someone will stop by to chat, and you'll turn off your time without remembering to turn it on 5 or 10 minutes later when you're back at it. Sometimes when I'm working on something intensely I don't realise this has happened for an hour or so, so it's always a bit of a pain to accurately estimate how much time should have been recorded but wasn't. This would be much easier if Aderant Expert could show you when you last turned off your time keeper (ex: Bob stopped by at 2pm, he was there talking about baseball for ten minutes so then I got back to work at 2:10. It's 2:40 so the manual addition is half an hour). **Recommendations to others considering Aderant Expert:** It is pretty good, but in 5 years I'm not sure I've seen significant improvements in Aderant Expert. Maybe we just haven't upgraded. **What problems is Aderant Expert solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use Aderant Expert to keep track of the amount of billable time. I find it significantly more efficient and accurate than manually recording time on a piece of paper. ### 26. Billing, timekeeping and quicklook are the menu options I use most often, they are easy to navigate and work very well. Especially for trying to find information quickly for a lawyer on the go or before motions/trials. **What do you dislike about Aderant Expert?** sometimes the program is very slow. I also don't like that you have to close out a billing window to get into a quicklook window (closing out windows to navigate to other parts of the software. **Recommendations to others considering Aderant Expert:** Aderant is very easy to use. The timekeeper (clock) option is great and the quicklook menu is also very helpful for finding information quickly. Users will need training in order to properly use the program and navigate to different menu options (so they will know which menu options they will need to use). **What problems is Aderant Expert solving and how is that benefiting you?** The business is moving from Aderant to Mattershpere, however, Aderant will still be used used for certain functions. ### 27. I like that you are able to release and unrelease the same day if there are changes to be made to time entry. I also like that you are able to search certain words if the client/matter number is not known. I also like how you are able to look up past invoices and client balances. **What do you dislike about Aderant Expert?** It's not that I "dislike" it, but a change needs to be made to the entry the next day, then additional steps need be taken in order to edit. i.e. looking up Time ID and retrieving the entry that way. If you could simply "unrelease" the next day, then it would save time. **What problems is Aderant Expert solving and how is that benefiting you?** The tool is used for Attorney Time Keeping/Billing Purposes. We're solving the problem of having time unaccounted for. The benefits of using this software is your able to see copies of all invoices, A/R, date that the Client/Matter was opened and is it is still active. ### 32. Quicklooks are a very good method to quickly find information. **What do you dislike about Aderant Expert?** The basic reports generated by Appshell are difficult to read and cumbersome to execute. The Report Writer and Docudraft tools are challenging to use.
