What legal billing software is best for remote law practices?

We’re a mostly remote law practice, and billing can get messy fast without the right system. I’m looking for software that makes it easy to track time, send invoices, and accept payments from anywhere — ideally something cloud-based that clients also find easy to use.

From the G2 Grid, here are the top options I’ve been looking at:

  • Clio Manage: The clear leader, with cloud-based billing, invoicing, and payments built in. Widely used by remote and hybrid firms.
  • 8am MyCase: Strong all-in-one with billing, payments, and a client portal that’s great for remote collaboration.
  • 8am LawPay: Legal-specific payment processing, perfect for firms that want secure online payments, though it’s more payments-focused than full practice management.
  • Smokeball: Includes time tracking and billing automation, good for smaller firms that want streamlined workflows, though cloud adoption isn’t as wide as Clio.
  • PracticePanther: Affordable, cloud-based option with billing and payments included, though reviews suggest it’s not as polished as the leaders.

For those of you running remote practices, which tools have actually made billing easier for distributed teams? Do you go for full platforms like Clio/MyCase, or stick with dedicated billing tools like LawPay?

I’m also curious, for remote practices, what ends up being more important in billing software: giving clients flexible online payment options, or making sure time tracking is super accurate across a distributed team?
