AWS Cloud WAN

13 reviews

AWS Cloud WAN is a managed wide area network service that simplifies the process of building, managing, and monitoring a global network connecting on-premises data centers, branch offices, and Amazon Virtual Private Clouds . By leveraging the AWS global network, Cloud WAN enables organizations to unify their cloud and on-premises environments, reducing operational complexity and enhancing network performance and security. With a central management dashboard, users can define network configurations, apply policies, and automate routine tasks, providing a comprehensive view of their entire network infrastructure. Key Features and Functionality: - Centralized Management: A single dashboard allows for the connection and management of branch offices, data centers, VPN connections, and VPCs, simplifying network operations. - Policy-Based Automation: Users can define access controls and traffic routing through a central network policy document, enabling automated configuration and consistent policy enforcement across the network. - Network Segmentation: The service supports the creation of isolated routing domains, allowing for the segregation of different types of network traffic and the application of specific security policies. - Built-in Automation: Cloud WAN can automatically attach new VPCs and network connections to the network, reducing the need for manual approvals and decreasing operational overhead. - Centralized Security Inspection: The service facilitates the integration of network security appliances, such as firewalls and intrusion detection systems, ensuring consistent security measures across the global network. Primary Value and Problem Solved: AWS Cloud WAN addresses the challenges associated with managing complex, multi-environment networks by providing a unified platform that simplifies connectivity between on-premises and cloud resources. It reduces the need for configuring and managing individual networks with different technologies, thereby decreasing operational complexity. The centralized management and policy-based automation enhance network security and performance, while the integration with the AWS global network ensures reliable and scalable connectivity. This comprehensive approach allows organizations to focus on their core business objectives without the burden of intricate network management.

Flexible, Well-Documented Scaling - But Pricing Can Get Steep

First: Amazon EC2's wide availability allows for a large number of first and third party tools for integrating the service with other services. Everything is well documented by Amazon themselves or by third parties.

Second: For our use case we needed to scale to a large number of compute instances rapidly which EC2 made possible. I also appreciate the flexibility of scaling down as quickly as we scaled up if needed.

Third: We initially focussed on a single European market, but Amazon's global reach allows our tech stack to easily enter different markets to, for example, be compliant with that markets compliance requirements.
