Effortless Setup with Powerful Translation Capabilities **Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Ahmed S. **Reviewed Date:** December 09, 2025 **What do you like best about Wordfast?** I like that Wordfast is straightforward to use. You can work absolutely right away without having to set up different things, like with Trados. The initial setup of Wordfast was very straightforward and smooth, with no issues at all. Everything worked absolutely fine, and I could start working on the translation right after finishing the installation. The enhanced and newer versions of Wordfast can convert PDF files to DOC or DOCX, allowing me to start working on translations right away, which I really appreciate. I also found the support for Google Translate plugins valuable when agencies started working with machine translation. **What do you dislike about Wordfast?** Yeah. You see the trial version is somehow limited to a specific word count, so I can't exceed that word count because, you know, this is actually about licensing. It is not something bad with the application itself. Let's say it's more about the limits that as a demo user of the software, I may face. **What problems is Wordfast solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use Wordfast for English and Arabic translation. It supports a plugin for Google Translate, unlike other programs. Wordfast simplifies my workflow with its straightforward setup, converting PDFs directly for translation. ### 2. When I started using it, I really did not know much about CAT tools but I stared with the free trial and then, once I got acquainted with the main features of the product and how to use it, I downloaded the free version. Wordfast works well with other CAT tolls and there is an array of language service providers that use this tool, not only in America but in Europe as well. **What do you dislike about Wordfast?** I don't think there is anything I am not happy with. And the fact that it is free is great, specially when some other CAT tools are so much more expensive. Although, now that I think of it, the fact that Wordfast is not compatible with Trados was quite annoying and difficult to integrate. On the other hand, I am Mac user, and Wordfast was so much easier to install that Trados, as I was able to install it without the need of any additional software, while for example, when I had to install Trados in Mac, I had to use Windows and Parallels. **Recommendations to others considering Wordfast:** I think Wordfast is a great tool if, for example you are a beginner translator or you are an experienced translator but you do not use CAT tools so much on your projects. It does work well, as well as some of the more expensive CAT tools out there such as Trados. I really recommend Wordfast. **What problems is Wordfast solving and how is that benefiting you?** Terminology management. When using a CAT tool, translations are more consistent in terms of terminology. ### 3. A handy tool to translate. **Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Carolina G. | Contador general, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.) **Reviewed Date:** May 17, 2019 **What do you like best about Wordfast?** It is a good tool when it comes to translating documents online, with a good storage memory, good capacity and that translates a large number of varied documents with Excel, Word, etc. It is not as optimal as it could be, but at the time of an emergency, it is always good to have several options available. **What do you dislike about Wordfast?** Despite being a good tool for translating documents, it has certain disadvantages that make using this tool a bit cumbersome. It does not update automatically, which requires you to update it to always have optimal service and there are many complicated and confusing words that prevent you from finding a translation as clear and transparent as possible. It would be great if they improved the tool, for a better quality of use and results. **Recommendations to others considering Wordfast:** I could recommend this tool, but only as an option at hand for an emergency. Clear communication is too important when transmitting certain information and the least we want as professionals is to give an incorrect about the work we are doing. I think they should improve the summary of words to make this tool a simpler and easier help when communicating. If I have to waste time looking for less sophisticated words I'm wasting energy. **What problems is Wordfast solving and how is that benefiting you?** I have made little use of this tool, because when I translate I find words so sophisticated that I lose the practical and simple sense that I try to give my documents. Accounting is a profession that needs the greatest possible simplicity, since in itself it is too exhausting a career, how to make it worse with words of exaggerated meanings. The simpler and more transparent what you propose to your clients, the better they will understand you. An improvement in this tool would be great, considering the varied needs of its users. ### 4. Additionally, it has a free version which is great if you’ only need to use a CAT tool casually and not as your everyday job. The documentation on how to use it is also really good and clear to understand, especially when you need to find an answer on the fly while you’re getting work done. **What do you dislike about Wordfast?** It’s not always intuitive and sometimes it’s hard to remember where to find what you’re looking for. On a similar note, there are plenty of functions and icons that you see but that are kind of obscure as it’s not always clear what each function is exactly for. It’s also always a problem if you want to install the app on a Mac unfortunately (though the online version pretty much solves this problem). I wish the interface got revamped a bit and that an iPhone app got released. **What problems is Wordfast solving and how is that benefiting you?** I was looking for an affordable CAT tool for a long time and this is the most cost effective for sure. At the end of the day, it always gets the job done at the lowest price. Because it’s so economical, it’s a tool that gets used to teach translation students, too — in fact, I learned how to use it while I was in college. ### 5. I used to work with Linux back then on one of my workstations. The experience was good, but the client has switched to another translation tool (my actuall preferred tool as well) so I haven't looked back. I like the fact that it is offered on Linux and that it is relatively cheap compared to the main competitors. **What do you dislike about Wordfast?** No option to work on server side TM's (for example with several translators at the same time). **Recommendations to others considering Wordfast:** No special recommendation offered. **What problems is Wordfast solving and how is that benefiting you?** I haven't solved any particular problems with WF. The client requested it, and I used to have a license available at the time. I use several tools and most of my clients require me to use one of the competitors. As that options includes a server side TM management, I have opted to stick with that tool. ### 6. The layout and functions are, for the most part, intuitive enough to memorise and automate quickly. It helps that it is fully integrated with Word. **What do you dislike about Wordfast?** There is not much that I dislike about Wordfast at all. Wordfast Classic handles fewer formats, compared with other CAT tools. It is usually seen as a beginner's platform with more limited functions, but it perfectly fulfils all of my needs, as an independent translator. **What problems is Wordfast solving and how is that benefiting you?** Its clear and intuitive interface has spared me a lot of time and hassle, which cannot be avoided with pricier and more "advanced" CAT tools - it is like decluttering, but for CAT tools. It also helps immensely with keeping my terminology consistent and ensuring that I do not, in my haste, skip over a sentence (as I am wont to do). ### 7. Like the fast that it is also usable on Linux and I can use Wordfast Anywhere in case of emergency. **What do you dislike about Wordfast?** Spellchecker, Transcheck with Terminology could come out with extra options. Even the latest version, Wordfast Pro does not support DeepL Machine Translation yet (Wordfast Anywhere only). **What problems is Wordfast solving and how is that benefiting you?** Does not handle multilingual glossaries. Not intuitive use of tables in Project Management view when importing/exporting tables modified with changes Benefits: able to use for freelance projects with minimum learning curve compared to other products. Cost effective, real-time quality check, complete integration with Word, great customer support. **What do you dislike about Wordfast?** Despite being light, Wordfast can be a little unresponsive, and file processing is a bit too slow. **Recommendations to others considering Wordfast:** Despite what they would have you believe, Trados is not the only choice, even when working with Trados files. There is a native compatibility between Wordfast and Trados which allows a Wordfast user to work on virtually any Trados project and produce segmented files that look and behave just like Trados’ own segmented files. However, Wordfast is not a mere clone for Trados, and frankly, it is a much better tool. **What problems is Wordfast solving and how is that benefiting you?** I was looking for a CAT tool compatible with macOS, that was lightweight and easy to use. Wordfast checks all those boxes. ### 11. I found it easier to work, than many other tools. What I like best of Wordfast is: 1) it's Mac compatible 2) gives you a solid, easy-to-use experience 3) user friendly interface: everything is clear, I like the layout and how things are organized. It's fast and everything always works perfectly. I have been able to work with ease and simplicity on large, heavily formatted documents that other software solutions handled very badly. The use of colors in the editor is awesome. It all adds up to the sense of tidiness and ease of use. **What do you dislike about Wordfast?** For sure I would love the software licence to not expire after 3 years.. but this is the company policy. This is no good for occasional translators: the purchase is worth the price ONLY if you do have a good amount of work to justify for the expense. **What problems is Wordfast solving and how is that benefiting you?** I can handle big formatted files more easily than I have done with other software.
