The usage of sphinx tabs by creating nested tabs in order to save page sizes and creating a better view for user helped me a lot. ### 4. As a developer, I need to show my code highlighted that made easy with the use of sphinx. it also checks for the validation of the code. Faster then Lucene/Xapian or any other indexing engine I have tried. In addition it has one of the simplest configuration files I have had the pleasure of using. I consider it the Nginx to Lucene's Apache. **What do you dislike about Sphinx?** Possibly the only issue you may hit is that it you cannot easily write your own indexing pipeline. **Recommendations to others considering Sphinx:** If you want a no frills indexing solution that works best when coupled with your existing SQL database then look no further. Unless you are sure you need the functionality of Lucene at least try Sphinx out. It takes less than an hour to configure and try. **What problems is Sphinx solving and how is that benefiting you?** I needed to index literally billions of lines of source code. Not only was sphinx able to do this quickly and reliably it also produced excellent search results with high performance. ### 12. Documentation is a bit dense. * By the former point, the learning curve is a bit steep, just enough for the cost/benefit to be rewarding. * Pluginization: More functionality than I expected is provided by third parties, but as this doesn't seem to affect the workflow (since the current state of the plugins I used is great), could bring problems if one of the plugin devs stop supporting their code. **Recommendations to others considering Sphinx:** Don't stay in the tutorial, read as much documentation as you can so everything is 100% clear. Sphinx is as powerful as you want it to be. **What problems is Sphinx solving and how is that benefiting you?** I'm documenting a huge project, with a lot (i mean A LOT) of components, and the docstring-based documentation generator just works. Picked up a beautiful clear theme and I have a documentation website in the looks of the Flask homepage which is great! One of the best (basic) features: you design one survey (questionnaire, ballot, poll, report form...) and can use it - in different designs - as online or offline (paper) tool. The design and extent of real time results (publishable online) appear to be endless. Beautiful graphics make results easily understood. Once you know your way round Sphinx you can even construct an individual score for one person (e.g. a personality profile) as well as a summative report for the whole sample, using various statistical procedures. At least in Germany (may not be true for all countries) the support is superb, friendly, helpful, highly committed - to your interests, that is. **What do you dislike about Sphinx?** The statistical procedures available are somewhat odd and limited. If Sphinx would improve here, a lot could be gained. However, it is possible to export data (e.g. to Excel, SPSS, csv ...). Tools for qualitative analysis of data are available as add-on, but somewhat rudimentary. **Recommendations to others considering Sphinx:** It is a "big", but scalable solution. Depending on usage you may want to use their online services (can be fairly expensive in the long run). With regular usage your own Sphinx server may well be worth the cost. **What problems is Sphinx solving and how is that benefiting you?** Ongoing evaluation of workshop trainers by participants of the workshop, results published in real time, individual scores available to each trainer. Various research projects have been supported by Sphinx.
