From an employers point in view the software is clunky, very hard to use, missing basic functionality, countless bugs and lacks any form of automated integration with accounts software (Xero). The so called integrations made available are 'CSV imports' or '3rd party integrations which do not work' - so no integrations. We have been using this provider for many years and there have been little or no improvements.

Monthly fees were introduced in October 2021 to support "new features and products" (see below), and fees increased again in 2023 as Smart Pension apparently continues "to invest in new features" (see below) - *** NO new features have been released (or that make any form of difference to the above pain) since October 2021 (as of November 2023) ***.

The email in October 2021 from Smart Pension:

"To improve the service we offer, we are introducing a new £REDACTED + VAT per month employer charge from 1 December 2021. This will allow us to invest in our platform so that we can improve our service, as well as introduce new features and products to make your and your employees’ lives easier."

Then in August 2023:

"That’s why we continue to invest in new features and improve our customer service, making your monthly pension administration easy so you can get on with what you do best – running your business. We understand that things aren’t easy at the moment and so, alongside investing in improvements, we’ve tried to keep the costs employers pay as low as possible. Like other businesses in the UK, we have faced increased costs in the last year and have tried our hardest not to pass them on. That’s why the charges employers pay have not gone up since 2021. However, we are now increasing the monthly charge employers pay from £REDACTED +VAT per month to £REDACTED +VAT per month from 1 October 2023."

Over the past couple of years, Smart Pension has made the process of Auto Enrolment and managing staff pensions so simple for a small business like mine, which only has three employees.

It walks you through the whole process, explaining what needs to be done and when. The checklist function is particularly helpful as it appears every time you log in.77

It also integrates with our Brightpay payroll software, enabling pension contributions to be uploaded at the touch of a button. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

There's not much to dislike about Smart Pension. They have recently introduced a monthly fee of £18.00 per month, but I understand other pension providers are doing the same.

Given the user-friendly system that Smart Pension operates and the fact I know the platform so well now, it seems pretty pointless looking for a new provider that might save me a couple of pounds a month. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
