Prior to Memberful, we were selling subscription-based homeschool curriculum through another platform and had a less-than-desirable experience. At the end of the day, running a business like this requires a lot of troubleshooting, and I understand hiccups will come up that must be navigated. However, the old platform simply did not provide the support necessary to equip us to run things smoothly. Enter: Memberful. From the very beginning, without any commitment yet on my part, they helped me feel so confident in my decision to move platforms. They response time was (and continues to be) lightnning fast, their interactions are warm and personable, and you can tell that they care. PLUS, they are so thorough! Every question I had already had a linked article dedicated to answering it. I am so grateful for the role that Memberful has played in helping elevate my business to the next level. **What do you dislike about Memberful?** So far, nothing! Even when there was an issue with migrating our members (which was not Memberful's fault, but rather had to do with how our finances were set up), customer service walked me through my options very clearly. **What problems is Memberful solving and how is that benefiting you?** My favorite thing about Memberful is that it is not its own platform that our users go to their site to interact with, instead it let's me keep all our content on our site for a smooth, integrated user experience. ### 2. It's integration with Wordpress is a breeze. Having reviewed the code of the plugin they provide, it is just as simple and effective as it can be. It offload the membership registration, management and payment from your Wordpress code base, letting you focus on what matter the most. I had to get in touch with their customer service for a domain-related cookie issue, and they could provide a quick and good answer: I had the feeling that I was really in touch with someone that knew the service and its technical operation. **What do you dislike about Memberful?** Even though its functionalities are great, Memberful pricing is quite high: the platform takes an amount slightly higher than most other platforms. The service makes it easy for us to connect our own custom, self-hosted WordPress website with our third-party newsletter-sending service and even a self-hosted forum setup. It handles all of our member payments and renewals and gives us the tools we need to make this wacky operation work. The customer service and support is also consistently exceptional. **What do you dislike about Memberful?** The service certainly isn't cheap. But, considering everything you get for what you're paying, it ultimately pays for itself. And I've not seen any other comparable option that's anywhere near as simple, polished, and user-friendly — particularly for anyone with a self-hosted setup like ours, where connecting all the disparate pieces and bringing everything together into something cohesive and attractive is typically anything but easy. **What problems is Memberful solving and how is that benefiting you?** Allowing us to maintain a membership offering with many different pieces and services all brought together into a cohesive and user-friendly whole. ### 4. It provides freedom and flexibility you won't get from the likes of Substack or even Patreon (which owns Memberful). Customer support is also excellent—super responsive and it's always the same two or three folks that you'll likely get to know over time. **What do you dislike about Memberful?** Increasingly Memberful's product development seems to be moving toward hosting your own content on Memberful itself. I disagree with this direction as it's not what I signed up for, and the resulting product is still far behind other site creation and newsletter tools. If I wanted something like Beehiiv or Substack, I would just use Beehiiv or Substack. There's still plenty of room for improvement on the core membership side of things. Would love to see a way for members to provide guest passes for friends/family, targeted retention discounts based on survey results, the ability to pause a subscription, self-serve tools for group subscriptions, a rewards program for free referrals, a wider range of API hooks, etc etc. My concern is these things will be neglected as Memberful tries to turn itself into yet another Substack clone. **What problems is Memberful solving and how is that benefiting you?** Memberful helps me run a subscription business on my own terms, serving as the glue between memberships, my members-only website, and my newsletter. ### 5. Every time I've had an issue, it has been solved by the team quickly and easily. I've been using it for years and love it a lot! **What do you dislike about Memberful?** Sometimes clients can find it difficult to navigate the back end of their membership on their own, but usually I can help direct them easily to the info they need. It is SO hard to know who your members are, what team members are there, what are the trends. Having a clear dashboard with downloadable reports would be so useful. Even being able to segment by date. I don't understand why I need to download ALL my members everytime I want to analyze data. I wish I could just select the last week, or month, or quarter. Instead of pulling five years of data. I wish I could easily have a report of all my team members; which teams have signed on, which teams have lapsed, how long have they been around for. **What problems is Memberful solving and how is that benefiting you?** We want to grow our membership and we're now over 2,000 members. They also added changes to their system when I submitted feedback on users having a slight issue getting signed up, which corrected the problem. One of the most popular features turned out to be our members-only Discord server where the fans can talk amongst themselves (and our podcast hosts and staff). We've checked out competitors to Memberful (including their parent, Patreon), but Memberful is by far the best option for what we do. **What do you dislike about Memberful?** We've only experienced two downsides to Memberful...and they're fairly minor. 1) By offering paid subscriptions, we've occasionally had to do some user support to people who are confused and claim to still get ads (when they haven't actually signed up to the new ad-free feeds available to them via Memberful...even though they've got the instructions on how to do so) 2) We have video podcasts and people occasionally hit subscription options which are audio-only (like Google Podcasts) and tell us it's "broken"...so we have to tell them to try one of the podcast apps that supports video if they want to subscribe to our video podcast feeds. (Memberful is working on a fix for this though.) **What problems is Memberful solving and how is that benefiting you?** By offering ad-free podcast feeds (and exclusives and bonus material) via Memberful, the income we earn though these subscriptions helps to offset the need for advertisers to pay for the production of our podcasts. It would be great to continue to grow our paid userbase so that we can eventually not need advertisers at all. ### 16. I have had great interactions with customer service over the last three years. They are polite and help me problem solve issues or questions that may arise. I love that I can protect content on my website as well as make downloads only accessible to my paid members. Additionally, the members rewards and email feature have been great additions. **What do you dislike about Memberful?** Memberful must continue to expand its connections with other platforms. For example, adding email service provider SendFox is something I have requested to both companies. Recently I found out that at the Premium level you have a 2GB limit for ALL of your downloads. They do not allow me as an admin to do a password reset for any of the members for so-called security reasons. But what actually happens is the user cannot do a password reset on their own because the system is clunky, for the reset email ends up in the user's spam folder, and they don’t have the means to access it, so I ultimately have to refund members on an ongoing basis because of this issue. Memberful has built their system so that an admin cannot change or see a user's password. All I can do is send an email reset email to the member, but this is 100% useless if that email never reaches the member .. as it leaves me with the only option of refunding their money and losing them as a customer. I have discussed this numerous times with the developers of Memberful and they have never once come even close to addressing the issue. I am locked in with these guys just because I set up with them from the beginning but honestly, I would not continue using them if I had a chance, and I do not recommend their service. **What problems is Memberful solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use Memberful to manage the subscriptions to my paid content WP website. ### 18. They take on feedback and are constantly improving. It would be good to be able to disable the Memberful hosted posts site completely when using the Wordpress integration instead. **What problems is Memberful solving and how is that benefiting you?** Wordpress membership plugins are unreliable and they slow down websites.
