I used Magento Open Source to host and run my e-commerce store for four years. I found it to be a packaged backend with a very robust feature list and full customization. I liked the price and the fully customizable features that allowed us to make our store look however we wanted. The general upkeep of Magento caused us to leave. The issue that I have with Magento is that you need a developer on staff to be able to make changes and fix issues or you need to hire a developer a la carte. Overall, it became more expensive to use. First of all, we needed hosting off-site using a different provider, and a lot of the time you are managing a handshake between two services, and it sometimes does not work. Also, issues would arise like a broken link or banner missing. Because of the heavy code aspect of Magento, these issues were not able to be resolved ourselves. The thing I like best about Magento Open Source is that we are finally moving away from it. The absolute highlight of our entire experience with this platform is the upcoming date when we officially migrate to Shopify. I dislike almost everything. It is a catastrophic drain on resources, acting like a blood-thirsty vampire that has nearly killed our business several times. We have been trapped in a cycle of never-ending technical problems and unreliable "security patches" that are both mandatory and ridiculously expensive.

These updates frequently break existing functionality, creating a "quicksand" effect where you are constantly paying developers to fix things that shouldn't have broken in the first place. The architecture is needlessly complex, seemingly designed to maximize billable hours for agencies rather than providing a stable environment for a merchant. I do not like that for every login I need a MFA. Plus after a couple of minutes of no activity it asks me to extend my session, and in some cases even after I extend my session it still logs me out. From the point of view of performance, it is not as good to choose Magento, because many other frameworks are developed which are somewhat more optimised and performance friendly than Magento.
