**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Eric S. | Architect/ Specification Writer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 24, 2025

**What do you like best about Deltek Specpoint?**

It is intuitive, but I feel like it takes too long to make edits, Not efficient yet. I still revise Word documents with another software.

**What do you dislike about Deltek Specpoint?**

It is too slow to edit and create sections. I am much faster in Word documents editing with a different software. I wish Specpoint was faster. It doesn't let me set up custom headers/footers. I have to import into Word and still use another software to complete the final product to meet my office standard format.

**What problems is Deltek Specpoint solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Masters updates.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Architecture & Planning | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 24, 2025

**What do you like best about Deltek Specpoint?**

I appreciate that all applicable codes/standards are included and I have a "library" to pick from. It saves a lot of research time and helps a lot with code compliance. The "tips" included throughout the specification are also very informative and make the process of writing even clear.

**What do you dislike about Deltek Specpoint?**

The website tends to be glitchy, and I frequently have to refresh the page for all parts of a section to appear. Unfortunately, the refresh process itself can be quite slow.

**What problems is Deltek Specpoint solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Because of Specpoint our firm is able to offer reliable, clear, in depth information to our clients and subcontractors.

  ### 8. MasterSpec Integration and Product Library Make It Stand Out

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Architecture & Planning | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**What do you dislike about Deltek Specpoint?**

Not as much customizable writing as hoped.

**What problems is Deltek Specpoint solving and how is that benefiting you?**

There are many cases on the support center website that have been submitted that are underway. The new workspace UI is much cleaner. Copying a spec section from one project to another is critical to be used.

  ### 9. Informative, exciting, concise.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Hannah G. | Instructor, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 04, 2024

**What do you like best about Deltek Specpoint?**

I appreciate that it is trying to bring a part of architecture into the 21st century that has been left out of the technology revolution of the industry.

**What do you dislike about Deltek Specpoint?**

I wish the updates could roll out faster, but I know you all are working hard on making them as beneficial as possible

Dela is integrated selectively and does not cover every business process

**What problems is Deltek Specpoint solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Specpoint houses AIA MasterSpec content directly, with automatic updates and built-in guide spec standards

  ### 11. A case study in bad roll-outs, but they are listening

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kyle J. | Architectural Associate, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 06, 2024

**What do you like best about Deltek Specpoint?**

It has a nice way of combining Uniformat and MasterFormat, although there is currently not a way of exporting Uniformat in some type of Preliminary Project Description deliverable that I am aware of.

The way that it breaks down products under each section is also quite helpful. It can be a bit confusing at times, but mostly due to sections being a bit inconsistent in how products are called out. I do know they are fixing sections to have more consistency, but I'm sure that takes time when you have over 900 spec section templates.

The tech support team is very responsive and super helpful. Most of my issues ended up being bugs in the system that needed to be escalated to the development team, but they would regularly check in with me with updates during that process.

**What do you dislike about Deltek Specpoint?**

*EDIT NOTE January 31, 2025*
I meant to change my review to two stars during my last update. Everyone I have talked to from Deltek have been wonderful to work with, and that definitely counts for something. I am now on the Customer Advisory Council to be able to see previews of planned updates and offer my critiques and suggestions with other industry professionals. My understanding is that the major upgrades to the system are in the works and scheduled to start rolling out April/March of 2025. Once that update is out, I will update my review.

*EDIT NOTE December 26, 2024*
The company has gotten in contact with me and we’ve had some very productive meetings where they shared plans for the future of the platform. I know that they were continually working on fixing bugs and adding features as I kept a close eye on all their release update documentation. But it seems they have been working with an independent software development team and are working to release some sweeping changes that should fix a lot of issues. I think they also said they changed up their beta testing process.

I think most of my frustration comes from the fact that I saw the value in the idea of the product and wanted it to work and be successful. Most everyone in my company gave up on trying to use Specpoint and continued to edit in Word, but I kept trying because I wanted to be helpful to them to make the product better. I especially like using the assemblies feature to add products to a project. However, I had so many projects come in with quick turn-arounds that I needed a solution and paid for a competitor’s product out of my own pocket just for my own sanity. Due to my meetings with Deltek, my company decided to renew their subscription to Specpoint.

I still think this is an excellent case study for other software development companies on how not to roll out new software to paying customers, but they definitely recognize that they made mistakes and seem to be working very hard to fix it. I have updated my review below to reflect some of the things they have fixed, and since I will be working with the software again, I will hopefully be able to update this again in 2025 to be a positive review.

*EDITED REVIEW*
Not only have they created an unbearable software experience, they have completely abandoned their old systems of specification format and delivery. I would understand not having backwards compatibility with their old Word files if the software could do everything that the Word files and their Word plugins could do. So now we are in a limbo where the software is incapable of outputting a project manual without needing post-processing manually in Microsoft Word, but the old Word Plugin can't assist in making those corrections. Any time savings during the initial selections is often outweighed the amount of manual work to get exported files ready to be sent to clients. I have suggested that if they don't plan on upkeeping their Word plugin, they should release it on Github as an open-source project since there can still be value in it for post-processing for specialty use cases. For example, I have had to come up with my own Word Macros to go through and add a page to odd-numbered sections with "This page intentionally left blank" since I work with several clients that require that for hard copies of project manuals.

I consistently get errors when trying to add specification sections to projects, I've seen errors when trying to make selections inside the sections, I've had entire sections fail to export, and I've had issues of text appearing in exported files that do not exist in Specpoint, the list goes on...Given that I have a background in IT and software development before going into architecture, I feel like I could make things better by giving detailed reports of every technical issue I had. I had to file a support ticket literally every day I opened the software because something new came up, and the amount of work it takes to write a good ticket was taking away billable time from my projects. I would have to clear my cache, document the steps I took to get the issue, check to see if I could replicate the problem in other sections or when using other browsers, or would sometimes be asked to send logs from the browser. This is the reason most companies give out beta versions for free. Instead, I feel like I’m paying them to be a beta tester.

Regular content updates (which is a huge part of paying for specification templates) have no system in place to pull into already started specification sections. The old way of sending out updates came with a PDF outlining all the added or removed sections, as well as a thorough write-up of the content inside sections that were changed. But that doesn’t seem to have made its way into the software. So unless you download and keep all the PDFs of those changes, you have no way of knowing what changed, when, or why. They have recently updated the office masters page to include dates that sections were updated, but you can only see it by clicking on a specific section, so its not particularly helpful.

When I asked how Deltek's internal specifiers feel about the software for managing the masters, I was told they don't use Specpoint. At the time, they were still editing all the master files in Microsoft Word and then give the updates to the Specpoint team to manually pull into the software. The reason I was told is that they have a very different job writing masters compared to users who use the masters to write specs for active projects (i.e. customers). I think Specpoint should be able to be a system to write masters within it, and even write specifications from scratch when need be. I hear they have been working on getting their internal spec-writing team on the system, but I feel like if they would have built it from the ground up with writing and managing masters to begin with, they could have found and fixed most of the bugs before a paying customer ever saw the software.

**What problems is Deltek Specpoint solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It is intented to be a cloud-based tool for writing 3-part specifications for architecture, engineering, and construction fields.

**Reviewed Date:** December 04, 2024

**What do you like best about Deltek Specpoint?**

I like the supporting documents, content, and overall format, or look, of the interface.

**What do you dislike about Deltek Specpoint?**

It can be really glitchy when making the selections.
I would like more options for the headers and footers. For example, adding a line in the header and a page number format that includes the page number and the total number of pages (2 of 8)

**What problems is Deltek Specpoint solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Having an option for which office master you can use is really nice.

  ### 15. SpecPoint in Practice

  ### 17. A concise comprehensive specifications platform

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Eugene N. | Managing Principal, CEO, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 12, 2023

**What do you like best about Deltek Specpoint?**

Using Deltek Specpoint, I reduce my time specifying by 50%. It is a huge time saver. Having on screen research of industry products with specifications writing SAVES TIME. This provides clients with VALUE for their money.

**What do you dislike about Deltek Specpoint?**

I have no dislikes. I know that software development takes time and listening to customers like us to continually IMPROVE the software through Specpoint customer service. In the end I can count on Specpoint to improve helping us because in the end our industry is a TEAM sport. It takes all of us, not just one or a small group.

**What problems is Deltek Specpoint solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Delteck Specpoint customer service works closly with us in working through software learning and issues we sometimes do not understand, yet in the end they provide the answer. Long term we have mentioned to Deltek Specpoint customer service that integration with BIM would be ideal to further increase productivity and provide better value for the client

  ### 18. Starting over

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Elaine B. | Founder | Architect Project Manager Healthcare, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 22, 2023

**What do you like best about Deltek Specpoint?**

Not too much right now. When Deltek stops access to specbuilder in the cloud I will probably look for another resource to provide specs.

**What do you dislike about Deltek Specpoint?**

I may be off base, but my initial impression of specpoint is I will have a few issues if my firm transitions to using specpoint instead of specbuilder in the cloud.
1. It seems deltek is starting over and have not launched a program that is as good as specbuilder is to use right now and are abandoning improving specbuilder for specpoint.
2. Deltek seems to be abandoning the Architect way of specifying materials that the industry has been using to specify building materials. Maybe I am just old school, and like the CSI numbering system over the building system way specpoint is headed.
3. Specpoint does not support an office master spec that you have edited down for your typical bread and butter building type, and you have to start over each project editing from out of the box specs that specpoint provides. You know, we each have those quality control things we put in our masters for each building type. With this quality control, we avoid the gotchas that caused change orders in previous projects.

**What problems is Deltek Specpoint solving and how is that benefiting you?**

None

  ### 19. Specpoint Automation Breaking Barriers

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kimberly P. | A Spec of Support, Inc.; EDWOSB, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 16, 2022

**What do you like best about Deltek Specpoint?**

Being an assembly based spec writing program offers efficiencies that are not currently offered in other spec writing programs. The fact that is is assembly based provides positive encouragement to our specifiers as it reduces editing time for them.

**What do you dislike about Deltek Specpoint?**

Since Specpoint is still adding attributes, it's hard to nail down dislikes. Main one right now would be being able to produce a Master TOC showing all specs and assemblies. Also, QC discrepancy verification reports would be super helpful, however I hear it's coming.

**What problems is Deltek Specpoint solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They are listening to the users and implementing the hurdles we face in our projects. Being on CAC for them allows us a voice to the developers and we love that interaction.

  ### 20. Very good company to work on

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Reynell T. | Design Architect, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 08, 2023

**What do you like best about Deltek Specpoint?**

It can easily collaborate internally and externally with the team. Production is easy with the help of the program. Everything is working very smoothly.

**What do you dislike about Deltek Specpoint?**

Nothing I can think of. All is pretty well.

**What problems is Deltek Specpoint solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps me a lot organizing and specifying the product's specifications. A lot quicker than the usual conventional way of writing and making specifications.

  ### 21. I have experience in MasterSpec, but see the benefits of having it digitized more fully.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Thomas B. | Architect and Project Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 06, 2022

**What do you like best about Deltek Specpoint?**

Deltek is more fully digitized and integrated and can be altered, saved, and retrieved more easily. These benefits will save the Spec writer time and money with more accurate and up-to-date specifications that are more integrated with the drawings.

**What do you dislike about Deltek Specpoint?**

Deltek program has a learning curve and Sections are not fully integrated into the program yet. Deltek appears to be assisting users and newcomers in learning the program facets.

**What problems is Deltek Specpoint solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Deltek is updating a good process used for decades in the Design and Building industry. Koodoos to them for updating an excellent system to make it even better for the A &E and Construction Industry!

  ### 22. Looks like a huge leap forward

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Timothy V. | Vp, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 16, 2022

**What do you like best about Deltek Specpoint?**

Assembly based spec development will save lots of time

**What do you dislike about Deltek Specpoint?**

Many features still in development and not guaranteed

**What problems is Deltek Specpoint solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Improving spec quality and completeness

  ### 23. Senior Architectural Specification Writer, with over 13 years-experience in specification writing.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Architecture & Planning | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 30, 2021

**What do you like best about Deltek Specpoint?**

"Supporting documents" is quite a remarkable extension to Masterspec, enabling spec. writers to meticulously select their parameters.

**What do you dislike about Deltek Specpoint?**

Masterspec does not include much of the performance criteria needed for many materials and systems, especially when manufacturers' names are removed, following Clients' requests not to include any manufacturers, but rather to include detailed performance properties to enable Contractors to identify the proper materials specified.

**Recommendations to others considering Deltek Specpoint:**

Masterspec is an all-encompassing specification writing source and tool, and would recommend it to all spec. writers, especially when concise, broad in scope and content specifications re required.

**What problems is Deltek Specpoint solving and how is that benefiting you?**

we utilize Masterspec to create, develop and update our master Office Documents. The continuous quarterly updates of masterspec helps us further maintain our office masters.

  ### 24. So Much Information at Your Fingertips

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ivette B. | Senior Associate|Specifications, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 19, 2021

**What do you like best about Deltek Specpoint?**

I really like the Supplemental Documents. I like the summary, industry references, and code references. Some sections include tables comparing products. When I first started writing specifications, these supplemental documents helped me understand the products/systems.

**What do you dislike about Deltek Specpoint?**

Spec Agent does not work as well as it potentially could. I use 4specs.com instead. They stay on top of changes in companies. They also have groupings of companies under a parent company so that we can see the connections. I would like there to be a discussion forum so that specifiers can discuss common issues with the specification sections.

**What problems is Deltek Specpoint solving and how is that benefiting you?**

There is always language that I like to add and language that I like to delete. However, overall, MasterSpec offers the assistance to edit specifications and tailor them to a specific project. Not sure what I would do without this software. It has definitely made my job easier and helped my development as a specifier.

  ### 25. Used Masterspec daily for several years

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Architecture & Planning | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 09, 2021

**What do you like best about Deltek Specpoint?**

Aside from being an industry-recognized format that is easy and intuitive once you dig into it, the fact that it was so easy to customize within the format made tailoring to projects very easy. Also, the fact that reference standards are kept up-to-date is a big time-saver. When new sections were needed, Masterspec is the first place I'd look.

**What do you dislike about Deltek Specpoint?**

Often, though, for more obscure or specialty sections, I'd open them to find placeholders...essentially empty skeletons. Also, too often, a section would read like a list of paid product placements with boilerplate info tacked on. Not as intuitive as it should be for "lessons learned" subparagraphs to be included consistently.

**What problems is Deltek Specpoint solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It all comes down to time. We didn't want to waste the time it takes to maintain spec sections to the level that Masterspec maintains them. There is still maintenance on our end, but not to the level that would be required without Masterspec. When you look at the cost of labor to do it ourselves vs. the cost of Masterspec, it is worth it. Problem solved and benefit realized.

  ### 26. I have used the product since 2000

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sharon A C. | Architect, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 30, 2021

**What do you like best about Deltek Specpoint?**

1) LIsting of Material Suppliers and quality requirements of certain products

**What do you dislike about Deltek Specpoint?**

1) lack of some unique sections - examples metal canopies, fireplaces, fire pits, swimming pools

**What problems is Deltek Specpoint solving and how is that benefiting you?**

none

**What do you like best about Deltek Specpoint?**

The best thing about Masterspec is has the backing from the AIA for its use as an industry standard. Most specifications that I've had to find are usually referenced back to Masterspec format.

**What do you dislike about Deltek Specpoint?**

The software is antiquated. The interface in microsoft word is cumbersome. The overall feel of Masterspec feels dated to a couple decades ago and needs to be brought into a more streamlined universe immersed in BIM modeling.

**Recommendations to others considering Deltek Specpoint:**

if you need a program to be fully integrated into your BIM modeling, there is a lot of improvement needed. If you need a basic program to give you the specifications from scratch, there isn't another program that has a wider range of material to start from.

**What problems is Deltek Specpoint solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Our documents are dependent on creating specifications for our projects. These are required by all principalities in our area, so without using the tool of Masterspec, our job to create the job specs would be a very long and tedious process.

  ### 28. The gold standard for specs

**What do you like best about Deltek Specpoint?**

I like that this is universal. We work with people all over the US and having a standard for specs makes communication so much easier. Editing is a breeze.

**What do you dislike about Deltek Specpoint?**

I would like it if more sections were included in the base spec rather than having to buy additional sections. We are residential architects and I would like to see more residential sections included in basic.

**Recommendations to others considering Deltek Specpoint:**

Do it. It is easy and customer support is fantastic.

**What problems is Deltek Specpoint solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We produce a very high end product and rely on MasterSpec to make sure our subcontractors adhere to our standards.

  ### 29. Masterspec may have lost its "master" status.

**What do you like best about Deltek Specpoint?**

Masterspec has been the go-to spec software for at least 15-20 years in my memory. It has an extensive and thorough database of specs to use for just about any project type.

**What do you dislike about Deltek Specpoint?**

Masterspec seems to be 2-5 years behind the industry. For example, if I get a new, yearly Revit releases, I don't feel like Masterspec moves adequately at the same pace. I would like it to better integrate into current software.

**What problems is Deltek Specpoint solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Like I said, It has an extensive and thorough database of specs to use for just about any project type.
