Giving this control to the organisation would be a good option. But filters are not that easily seen, so in a way it looked as if goals have disappeared. Unlike Goals or OKRs, the reason a conversation fails to be completed isn't the fault of Betterworks, but the instiution not configuring the conversation to allow for success. **What do you dislike about Betterworks?** Goals and OKRs module - There are just many features, buttons, options within this module that seem useless or wasted space. The whole "transparency" seems excellent on paper, but in practicality, how many times will users need or even should be reviewing other associates' goals/OKRs outside their department or even team. I would like to see internal analytics on how many users utilize Nudge and Cheer or leave valuable comments within Goals. It seems like a wasted opportunity to tie the conversations module back to the goals module. All you need in Goals is the Name of Goal, Progress, Due Date, and Score (including the additional actions). Overall, that is the main reason I'm not too fond of BetterWorks; there are, in our case, at least three separate modules: Goals, Conversation, and Appreciations, and they don't connect in any significant way at all. I should click on a Goal and start a conversation right off of it, directly referencing the goal in question with my manager. I should also be able to link an appreciation directly to someone making progress on their goal. I like the appreciation module in theory, but it's so basic. I like how it notifies your manager when you receive one, but what about your whole team. Betterworks needs to stop tacking on more things just because companies are asking for them and look at their service as a whole. The modules are too segmented and do very little to entice users to engage with it other than complete a required task and leave. **Recommendations to others considering Betterworks:** I recommend understanding exactly why you need a service like Betterworks to achieve your new process before purchasing. Admittedly software adoption failure for these types of services doesn't always rest on just the product but the institution themselves. I would say Betterworks does some basic things very well; however, if you are an institution that wants to set up a somewhat complex process or requires constant flexibility and iteration, then Betterworks is not a great option. **What problems is Betterworks solving and how is that benefiting you?** No problems solved, just different ones plus the added pain of a learning curve. **Official Response from Daniel Sisson:** > Hi Kevin, First I want to say that we really appreciate the time you took in your thorough review. It can support pure OKR methodology as well as variations. Being able to do objectives tracking, alignment analysis, talent management, and development planning in one place makes our people program much easier to run. Most of the features are intuitive, with low maintenance requirements. While we ended up customizing a few elements, this is one of the best turn-key solutions I've encountered. **What do you dislike about Betterworks?** There are some counter-intuitive elements, particularly around objectives roll-ups as well as accounting for objectives that are not % progress based (e.g. pass/fail types of metrics). We found workarounds to all these, but of course would have preferred a solution that contemplated a few more use cases and styles. Some newer features such as Talent Calibration still require more refinement and adherence to best practices. A higher confidence level in what an employee sees versus what a people manager sees would be helpful as well, as many of our leaders were not clear on which fields were confidential at the outset. **What problems is Betterworks solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are on a cultural evolution journey that involves a greater focus on outcomes rather than activities, and getting more focus on what matters versus having a proliferation of metrics and dashboards. It's about humanizing the business, fostering transparency, furthering trust. You can have your OKRs updated in just a few minutes and do a follow-up of your CFRs without any difficulties. We did realize we had to still keep Performance Improvement Plans separated out of the system because if a manager started it the employee could see it listed in the conversation field.
