**What do you like best about Avalara?**

Unfortunately, nothing met our expectations.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

Costly, painful onboarding, unnecessary state registrations, software incompatibilities, and zero accountability. Their team admitted to unresponsiveness and miscommunication, but refused any resolution. We’ve moved on, but still deal with state notices from our time with them. Working with Avalara added to my stress and workload. Their complete disregard for customer satisfaction made this one of the worst vendor experiences I’ve had in a long time.

**What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They were supposed to ensure sales tax compliance, nexus monitoring, state registrations, and filings through a seamless Shopify integration backed by world-class support. We got the exact opposite. No benefit at all. A lot of headaches and wasted time/money.

Automate the calculation of taxes charged on invoices and taxes paid on purchases.  Interfaces with all valid exemption certificates that are loaded in the software so that taxes are not charged when appropriate.  Very easy to use and is very user friendly.

Technical support is not the fastest when trying to figure out why something is not working the way we expect.

Saving us large amounts of time and money.  Makes servicing audits very easy.

If this was years ago, my review would different. But Avalara has truly made strides to improve. The biggest improvement was to their customer support, they have really turned things around. I was an avid hater of this company, that has changed and they've won me over.

Sometimes when troubleshooting, issues can go on for quite some time before a resolution is found.

**Recommendations to others considering Avalara:**

Make sure you get a good onboarding team and never be afraid to ask as many questions as you need, other than that you should be good!

Time spent is definitely a big one, we've cut down on the downtime for all of the admin work required with sales tax record keeping. Accuracy would be another huge benefit. It's so hard to know all of the laws and state legislations regarding sales tax calculation.

Avalara makes the sales tax compliance process as painless as possible. When I need to adjust my return, its done quickly and accurately. It's easy to calculate tax based on products.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

Difficult to understand which specific selections to make when I have a customer service question. I had one customer service agent close my ticket and tell me I sent it to the wrong area and resubmit. I also have a big problem with FX translation as we accept invoices in multiple currencies. I should have the option to translate in Avalara, not my ERP.

Avalara has allowed our transactional tax process to maintain accuracy for audits, reduce the amount of time our Finance and IT departments have to spend on data updates and allows us to see system errors in our monthly review of reports.

Avalra's Univeristy and knowledge base has helped to increase our own research but when reachign out to support I only get redirected to the knowledge base articles I've already read.

Avalara has benefitted our company for 15 years in providing great tax calculations, returns and tax exemption management. It has been managed by a staff of one to two people for all those years.

**What do you like best about Avalara?**

What they said they would solve, but actually they made everything worse.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

First, the product:  AvaTax doesn't work well.  Avalara clearly doesn't care about maintaining an excellent product with their QBO integration. We had tax calculations change after we sent the invoice to a client, even though we didn't change anything on the invoice. Most recently, Avalara has failed to support an update the QBO rolled out, and now tax calculations tax 3-5 minutes to calculate... what a huge waste of time?  You want to create an invoice, and then send it to your customer, right?  Nope, create that invoice... sit around for 3-5 minutes, make sure the sales tax shows up, then send it. Absolutely horrible.

Next, the service:  Avalara's support is the worst I've experienced, of any company, ever.  We paid for a higher level of support, and we were assigned an Account Manager.  Our Avalara Account Manager will not respond to me unless I send at least 3 emails.  Average response time is 8 days.  Technical support is worthless as well.  They just tell you what you already can see in the AvaTax dashboard and will not help you find meaningful answers. If your ticket gets escalated, be prepared to spend 4-5 hours showing Avalara how you QA'd their product and found their bug, and then once you've proven to them, multiple times, that the bug exists, they might just fix it.

Finally, the price:  Avalara will automatically upgrade you to higher usage tiers without your permission.  They will charge exorbitant "Upgrade Fees".  Because their QBO integration is so bad, you end up having to use 3x the usage you expected, which then costs you 3x what you expected.  We literally paid more because their product was worse than expected.

None. The were supposed to solve our sales tax calculations, but they keep changing and messing up the calculations.  You ask the support team why their system is changing the sales tax amount afte you've sent the invoice to your customer, but they don't know.

It's simple to use and uderstand. I can have peace of mind that my returns are filed properly.

Support is not the best and they sometimes have billing issued that take a lot of time to receive credit or have them solved.

I just have to bill my clients and Avalara does the rest with the tax authorities.

Once Avalara is set up and configured, it is a virtually hands-off solution to sales tax calculation, collection, and filing.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

The biggest drawback to Avalara is "one-size-fits-all" nature of their model. The set up for a very small company is not much different from a large organization. If you situation does not fit in their box, you might run into difficulties at times that require a hand-holding solution.

What they are great at doing is calculating, charging, filing, and paying US sales tax. It is very hands off for me. The calculations are accurate and filings are timely.

Avalara takes all the guess work out of sales tax. We've integrated with three different systems so far and have been super simple to get started.

The price is on a the high side, but if you can afford it, it's completely worth it.

UPDATE:  Avalara Customer Care reached out on 7/1 and offered a conversation to help address the issue (see comment below).  I reached out that same day to follow up -- and have received NO response (or follow up response from their Customer Success team).  Sadly, this illustrates my point -- its frustrating to be a net promoter of a great technology, but unable to recommend the company due to unacceptably poor Customer Service.  Avalara has solved the hard tech issues...however, they need to sort our their customer support & customer success functions, which have been MIA for the past year.

Avalara helps you manage your complex tax nexus by caculating sales tax and filing sales tax returns.  It integrates nicely with quickbooks and their sales & implementation teams were terrific.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

Thier customer support doesn't exist.  Sadly, customer success is overloaded and doens't respond to emails.  Support tickets to address simple billing issues go unanswered (after almost 2 months)...and you're never actually able to speak with someone...unless you're patient enough to wait 45 days to get a 10-min slot on your customer success reps calendar.

I'm by nature an Avalara Net Promoter, but they've unwisely spent their equity with me as a champion for their product by wasting my time trying to solve simple issues.

Sales tax calculation for a saas product, which has an uneven sales tax nexus across states.

My favorite feature on Avalara is the AvaTax Returns! It makes return filing so effortless for our small team of 2.

The customer service support can be a little slow at times, but they ensure that the cases are resolved appropriately.

Prior to Avalara, we used to calculate sales tax (with our own homegrown workbooks) and file returns manually or through import templates provided by the State. With Avalara, our returns filing process has become incredibly easy and it saves our tax team so much time, and let's us focus on more important tasks.

Sometimes many of the compliance decisions although there should not be "grey area" per say, it often comes down to a decision of the business owner, the software will always only do so much. --However that's appropriate and most likely a positive at times.  Sometimes, you just wish they could tell you a little more EXACTLY what to do.

I really appreciate the scalability and customization of all of Avalara's solutions. Fom Avatax to MRA, Avalara realizes its diverse needs of its users and does its best to cater to those needs through all of its solutions' functions.

My only compliant would be some of the support that I have received has not been of the quality that Avalara's products can provide.

We use the MRA solution which has greatly improved the sales tax preperation function that we provide to our client. This improvement looks like reducing human error and increasing efficiency.

Upside is that it has the same tax calculations that QBO has built into their product.

If you have an error their front-line support does not know the product and in my experience will give incorrect advice. 

Support will close tickets without providing a solution and claim that the issue was user error. After repeatedly following up they will admit the error was internal and not user error but not offer any explanation.

It works well with e-commerce platforms like Magento. Does okay with WooCommerce. Our CSM has been willing to resolve issues with us directly and has been a transparent communicator. I did not know that our CSM managed 800+ customers. Knowing that now, I can appreciate the Avalara CSM being available to escalate issues at a higher level.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

Tech support has been a challenge to work with, but we are committed to resolving the issues we've encountered. We no longer trust that our CSM will put us on the radar for expedited support. Flying blind with this application and with this company.

Avalara helps us solve the Sales Tax integration with our Magento E-commerce stores. In that regard, it helps us with sales tax compliance and sales tax remittance in our nexus regions.

We use ECM which helps us centralize certificates, keep track of expiration dates and tax id numbers. It also provides us a resource center with a lot of important information.

It does not automatically reject certificates with missing informations. It does not allow to create customize report which contains tax ids. We asked our account support to create a customized report for us but it does not capture all the customers with uploaded certificates.

Filing returns accurately and on time, takes the need for extra staffing out of our office.  Integrates into Sage 100 Advance seamlessly.  Takes care of SST returns which helps reduce exposure and eases our burden.  We also use exemption certificate servuces,  Different Avalara systems work well together.  Easy of reconciliation to our general ledger monthly to insure to two system stay in sync.

For most part everything works well.  Sometimes delay on service response time.

There is a faily steep learning curve when first setting up a client. I don't find the knowledge center very helpful when searching specific issues. For example I am not able to search "Company Code" in the knowledge center because there will be no matches.

We are able to expand greatly due to returns being consolidated into one area. The fast filing with transmission and EDI uploads create allow us to file more returns.

I love the reports I can get out of Avalara and the ease of being able to edit my transactions. Avalara calculates sales tax using updated tax rates so I don't have to worry about not collecting or filing the correct amounts. The new Exemption Certificate Management tool lets me keep PDFs all of my certificates which makes it easier in an audit.

**What do you dislike about Avalara?**

I only wish a customer service rep checked in with me more often and not just time to renew my contract.
There are other features I am not utilizing that I have questions about and don't know who to contact.

Avalara is integrated with our accounting software so we're getting real time tax calculations. No manual calculations are needed.

Nothing.  Seriously. Neither the service they provide nor the technology they deploy provides the value it seems like they would provide.

Registered us for multiple states in which we do not need to be filing sales tax reports resulting in thousands of dollar of fines and fees. 

Does not work with Quickbooks Online regardless of what they tell you.

Consistently incorrectly altered customer invoices.

Despite multiple attempts to resolve issues, our account manager just swept everything under the rug and we ended up stuck paying for a service we could not use for 12 months.  100% wasted money.

Saves me a ton of time. It is very scalable as your company grows, so you don't have to think about switching to a different solution when you get big. Also offers a lot of products that each satisfy a different need.

Obviously would be worse without the software, but their support is really a struggle. Getting someone to understand your needs via a support ticket is near impossible, and they close them far too quickly without actually resolving your issues.

Returns are calculated and filed monthly as needed with minimal review required on my part. Saves me a lot of time because calculating the quantity of returns I need myself would be near impossible.

It is great to have Avalara calculate all taxes and create and submit the returns

The customer service is abonimable.  When there are issues and support cases created the response from Avalara is very slow and the responses are as if computer gnereated, supplying information directly from the Knowledge Centre and not addressing the actual needs of the customer.  One has to ask multiple times to have a person respond, Avalara reists that at all costs, continuing to send e-mails with the robot responses.

None!  We have an issue that is now almost 2 years old that is not resolved.

Avatax api integrations and plugins are fantastic. We not only use it with our ERP system but also on our website. It is very beneficial to also factor in customer tax exempt forms when calculating tax

Submitting a new ticket is not as simple as expected. Once a ticket is submitted, it takes a few hours for an initial response.
