When it comes to unfavorable things, I'd say it's the learning curve. For beginners it's not easy to understand at all. It take time to understand All the modeling options and workflow specially if you are new to database designing. And also some parts of the interface feel cluttered even I used to stuck initially. In our backend architecture for the FD (Fulfillment Dashboard) project-a centralized system displaying real-time order summaries and fulfillment details for our client Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS)-we had to manage complex data models spanning both Oracle DB and PostgreSQL. What I appreciate most about SqlDBM is its browser-based reverse engineering capability. Instead of installing heavy desktop clients, our backend team could directly import existing Oracle DDL scripts (CREATE TABLE statements, foreign keys) and visually map out the target PostgreSQL schema. Having this visual blueprint made generating our Spring Data JPA entities highly predictable. While the reverse engineering from DDL scripts is excellent, the CI/CD integration requires manual intervention. SqlDBM can generate the clean PostgreSQL forward-engineering scripts, but we still cannot execute migrations directly. We have to manually extract those SQL files and wire them into our GitHub Actions and AWS CodeBuild pipelines to apply the changes to our actual AWS infrastructure. I mostly use SqlDBM to learn about the databases I am working with. Since you can visualize it helps me understand how the different tables relate to one another. Which is super helpful if you're trying to learn a database you're not familiar with. Helps avoid going through many SQL files or having to ask data engineers basic questions. I like that SqlDBM is browser-based with no setup, which made the initial setup very easy. I just signed up in the browser, and we were able to import our database in minutes. The reverse engineering is perfect, and the clean DDL export is a great feature, helping us design ER diagrams and manage our database efficiently. I also appreciate the real-time collaboration feature, similar to Google Docs, which is very useful for our team. There's nothing major that bothers me with SqlDBM, but having a dark mode, more document export options, and better performance for large models would improve it. I like that modelers in my company can work together on the same project in parallel. In addition, the recipients and users of the data models we create can view them easily, which helps them answer their business questions much more efficiently. One area that can definitely be improved is CI/CD. Everything around releasing and deploying could be handled much better, so we wouldn’t have to implement our own custom scripts to manage changes and then rely on additional external tools to deploy everything. Automation and integration options are limited. For example, the APIs feel lacking. SQLDBM is part of the collaboration stack we use as our platform, but integrating it with the rest of our collaboration tools is challenging, and in some cases seems impossible. I don’t want to send stakeholders to SQLDBM, Airtable, Confluence, and other separate tools.
