It has all the basic functionalities of a CAT tool and is great for connecting LSPs with freelancers. **What do you dislike about Smartcat?** The "find and replace" function doesn't work. The Machine translation could be greatly improved. However, my biggest problem with them as of late has been a lack of payments. I have been in contact with the SmartCAT support team for almost 6 months about this delayed payment (which is worth a substantial amount), but as the payment has not been made by the LSP, SmartCAT have been brushing me off, to the point of stopping replying to my emails. SmartCAT say they guarantee to make payments for jobs completed and accepted within SmartCAT, but have failed to deliver. I have therefore lost complete trust in them and would not recommend. **Recommendations to others considering Smartcat:** SmartCAT is good for use as CAT tool, but don't rely on them to comply with payments. **What problems is Smartcat solving and how is that benefiting you?** SmartCAT is all online, so it means you can work from any device and pick up exactly where you left off. It also allows you to chat to project managers quickly and easily and negotiate rates and deadlines. As you re online, you have access to all your projects, the current and archived ones. You don’t have any limitation, you can convert your source files and choose the machine translation or automatically filling the similar segments and work with the client directly-now you can request a payment from the client. **What do you dislike about Smartcat?** Unfortunately it s not a well known platform. Its popular only in Russian speaking countries, so when I send my profile link to the clients in other countries - 95% of them don’t know it. As well I can’t use it well on my mobile phone or ipad which is so sad if you are in a hurry to deliver your translation **Recommendations to others considering Smartcat:** Smartcat is free and smart enough to save your time! **What problems is Smartcat solving and how is that benefiting you?** It is not supported on mobile phones or ipad. Like memsource, you can’t work offline on your local computer. Always need to update the glossary ### 4. It can accessed anywhere which is a plus. It is easy to use. **What do you dislike about Smartcat?** It doesn't support Arabic very well. The different text direction works, but in tables it doesn't. i have to manually mirror the tables afterwards. There are other nuances that the tool doesn't capture (such as punctuation spaces, and the lack of 'th" or "nd" in Arabic. I also don't understand why it doesn't use the translation memory sometimes and gives me instead machine translation, which for Arabic - as you can imagine - is a disaster! I don't like that i can't compile one full translation memory per client. In addition I can't seem to be able to scroll down fast when in the translation window, it seems to be always "refreshing" and pulls me back up to where i started! Finally, the downloaded translations come in three fonts or more. The Bold and Italic are almost always inverted. So, as a result, i spend a lot of time formatting. As a final note, it seems to me that SmartCat puts most of its effort in the corporate side of the business than retail (freelancers). All the updates i get are about managing projects better and facilitating payments rather than updating the linguistic side of the tool. **What problems is Smartcat solving and how is that benefiting you?** Saving time - most and foremost. Consistency is also a good benefit. I haven't used other CAT tools so I can't really compare it against others. ### 5. The software is very clear and simple to track with through the course of my work on a text. **What do you dislike about Smartcat?** I have had some issues around with the "word-wrap" of Tibetan texts that I work with. Typically this is resolved through adjusting the widow of my browser, but there has been at least one time where there is some deeper issue and we cannot resolve the problem with the source text and several lines were persistently illegible. While this tool certainly has enough meat on its bones to get the job done from most angles, the core of SmartCat is in its simplicity: it encourages buyers to purchase services from freelance translators in a non-terrifying way. If you look at resources like Proz or do a Google search, despite the availability and readiness of translators all over the world, the barrier-to-entry for the new buyer is daunting and almost off-putting. This platform/community/eco-sphere is important to connect service provider to buyer. Functional and educational at the same time. **What do you dislike about Smartcat?** The editor itself needs to grow in terms of spellcheck/auto-populate/auto-suggest/track repetitions. Compared to the top CAT-tools specifically, linguist workflow and efficiency is still a bit slow. This upgrade is important to keep translators/editors engaged and excited in the tool. The other area for improvement would be custom service. The SC crew has always been the best of the best, but I think adding numbers to their staff might help take tech support email turnaround from 2-3 days down to 1, perhaps. It hurts to say but, be patient. **Recommendations to others considering Smartcat:** Don't be discouraged if your support requests arent answered immediately. **What problems is Smartcat solving and how is that benefiting you?** As a linguist working in-house, I chose SC because it offered the basic tools I needed with the possibility of quickly outsourcing what I couldn't handle alone through the marketplace. Like many industries still getting to know what professional L10N means, my current field requires getting higherups to BUY IN to the whole idea first. By being free for me to set up and start using, Ive been able to get the L10N program off the ground with minimal up front investment, minimal risk, and it was very easy to get going. The easy interface is a nice selling point when educating other departments on what's going on (compared to the more linguistically powerful OmegaCat which I've used as a translator). ### 28. 2 Months with No Response From Support.
