"PowerMill for laser-based manufacturing technologies"

What do you like best?

Its flexibility and automation capabilities. Even PowerMill is a software developed fpr machining purposes, we used it for laser-based technologies (surface treatment and additive manufacturing). We could do it thanks to its high possibilities of automation by macros and API.

What do you dislike?

Comparing with other softwares such as Siemens NX, which includes all the CAD and CAM functions in the same software, Autodesk has split the CAD/CAM capabilities into two different softwares: PowerShape and PowerMill. This is sometimes quite uncomfortable and time-consuming.

Recommendations to others considering the product

It is not the cheapest software, but it gives you a level of flexibility and automation that other softwares don't.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Research in laser-based manufacturing technologies, mainly surface treatment processes and additive manufacturing of metal parts. Some client's parts have been successfully treated/manufactured thanks to PowerMill.

"Good for complex surfaces!"

What do you like best?

Simulations, post process, surface config

What do you dislike?

Integration with their CAD software is too messy

Recommendations to others considering the product

If you are currently using a 3-axis machine, add your own machine and simulate complex machine, those features may fit you well.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Positive impact, easy to learn the basic configuration, a lot of features to perform complex surfaces

What Computer-Aided Manufacturing solution do you use?

"PowerMill has been a lifesaver for me and my company by providing resources better than others"

What do you like best?

So many companies worldwide use PowerMill which makes it so easy to share information with such a well-known and exciting software program.

What do you dislike?

PowerMill often has multiple updates that I have to install on my personal software, so it would be nice if PowerMill could more easily be updated.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

With the amazing 3D technology, I can easily convey new ideas that I can bring to my company. I was actually able to virtually create a prototype for a new medical instrument I am working on.

"Powerful but Overcomplicated"

What do you like best?

There's lots of control over certain aspects of toolpathing strategies

What do you dislike?

There are some very simple features that are useful on simple machining processes, that are not included - or that require some odd workarounds to accomplish.

What business problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

5axis CNC machining
