"Fast, Secure Team Messaging with Full Control and DevOps-Friendly Integrations"
What do you like best about Mattermost?

What I like best about Mattermost is the control it gives you without sacrificing collaboration. It delivers fast, reliable team messaging while letting organizations self-host, customize, and meet strict security or compliance needs. Channels keep conversations focused, integrations plug neatly into DevOps workflows, and everything feels purpose-built for teams that value transparency, ownership, and serious work over noisy chat. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Mattermost?

What I dislike about Mattermost is that it can feel less polished out of the box compared to some mainstream chat tools. Initial setup and administration require technical effort, and advanced features often need configuration or plugins to shine. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Reliable, Secure, and Perfect for Organized Team Communication"
What do you like best about Mattermost?

Mattermost is reliable, fast, and keeps all internal communication organized in one place. I like how it’s built with privacy and data control in mind, which makes it stand out from typical cloud-based messengers. Channels, threads, and integrations with tools like Jira and GitHub make it great for team coordination. It feels professional but still easy to use for quick updates or in-depth project discussions. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Mattermost?

The interface can feel a bit dated compared to newer messaging apps, and the mobile version sometimes lags or misses notifications. Setting up integrations also takes some trial and error, especially for non-technical users. A few small improvements in search speed and UI polish would make the overall experience smoother. "Mattermost could be a next Whatsapp for the Corporate!"
What do you like best about Mattermost?

I feel using Mattermost in the office is exactly like using WhatsApp, it’s so easy to use. I use the Mac version of Mattermost, so whenever someone messages me, the app icon bounces and gives me a hint with a notification sound, which is very useful. And yes, it’s also a bit addictive. We colleagues sometimes set GIF profile pictures just to add some fun while chatting this is the feature I like the most. I never require customer support. Whole day we use Mattermost only Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Mattermost?

Sometimes, finding a group or a person in the long list becomes difficult. I remember seeing some onboarding screens that explain Mattermost shortcuts, but I haven’t been able to find them again. After the latest update, the option to use a GIF as a profile picture also seems to be hidden, it’s quite hard to locate now. Files above 15 MB can’t be shared on Mattermost, and there’s also an issue with SVGs. I have to zip the file first, otherwise Mattermost doesn’t show it as a downloadable asset. Mattermost should find more ways to find new fun features that help office people feel more engaged. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Efficient, Self-Hosted Solution for Secure Team Collaboration"
What do you like best about Mattermost?

I appreciate Mattermost for its easy-to-use interface and the ability to create different channels for different teams within the company. Hosting our own server makes everything fast, and it is valuable to integrate a lot of useful systems and custom bots in the platform. Having our important data stored on the company server and the option for developers to set up and integrate various bots and tools easily are significant advantages. I find the bot commands especially useful for creating instant tickets and receiving automatic notifications for different alerts. The fact that custom bots can provide helpful information from external systems inside Mattermost is a great feature as well. Additionally, the overall setup process was pretty easy, aided by online video tutorials and documentation. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Mattermost?

I don't like that the search system is sometimes too cluttered and shows everything, making it hard to find what I'm looking for. Also, the UI design seems primitive compared to competitors like Slack. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Reliable Platform with Room for UI Improvement"
What do you like best about Mattermost?

I use Mattermost as a secure team collaboration and messaging platform to support day-to-day communication and coordination. I appreciate how it helps keep conversations organized through channels, direct messages, and integrations, especially in environments where data privacy and self-hosting are important. The platform eliminates the need to rely on multiple tools or public chat apps by combining messaging, file sharing, and integrations in one place. I like how it centers on reliability, transparency, and control, which builds trust within the team. It supports disciplined communication through clear channels and integrations, which helps teams stay aligned without noise. Mattermost grows alongside technical and organizational needs, making it feel like a platform you invest in, not just a tool you use. Its strong focus on security, permissions, and self-hosting addresses compliance and data ownership concerns while keeping conversations organized and easy to follow across teams and projects. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Mattermost?

While Mattermost is strong in reliability and security, the interface feels very utilitarian, which can make everyday use feel less intuitive or engaging compared to more modern collaboration tools. Some useful features are buried in menus or settings, making them harder to discover without prior experience. Onboarding can also be challenging for new or non-technical users, as concepts like permissions, integrations, and self-hosted configurations often require extra explanation. Additionally, managing plugins and updates can feel manual and time-consuming, especially in larger deployments. Improving the visual polish, simplifying configuration flows, and providing clearer in-app guidance would make Mattermost easier to adopt while preserving its core strengths. What do you dislike about Mattermost?

One thing I’ve always had issues with is their updates. Sometimes the updated installer fails for no clear reason, and then after a while it works fine again. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Self-Hosted Mattermost: Full Data Sovereignty with Excellent Webhook Integrations"
What do you like best about Mattermost?

The primary reason we chose Mattermost is the ability to self-host. working in a secure environment, we cannot have our operational chat logs stored on a public cloud servers; Mattermost gives us full data sovereignty. Beyond security, the webhook integrations are excellent. We have easily scripted our monitoring tools (like Zabbix and Grafana) to pipe alerts directly into specific "War Room" channels, which keeps our incident response strictly internal and organized. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Mattermost?

The mobile app experience can be frustrating, specifically regarding push notifications on the self-hosted version. Getting reliable alerts requires either using their encrypted relay server or compiling your own app, which is a significant administrative hurdle for our team. Additionally, the search functionality isn't as intuitive or "fuzzy" as Slack's; if you don't recall the exact keyword or file name, retrieving older documentation from chat history can be difficult. Managing the server upgrades also adds to our operational overhead, as it requires manual maintenance windows rather than being a seamless SaaS update. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
