"Fast, Secure Team Messaging with Full Control and DevOps-Friendly Integrations"
What do you like best about Mattermost?

What I like best about Mattermost is the control it gives you without sacrificing collaboration. It delivers fast, reliable team messaging while letting organizations self-host, customize, and meet strict security or compliance needs. Channels keep conversations focused, integrations plug neatly into DevOps workflows, and everything feels purpose-built for teams that value transparency, ownership, and serious work over noisy chat. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Mattermost?

What I dislike about Mattermost is that it can feel less polished out of the box compared to some mainstream chat tools. Initial setup and administration require technical effort, and advanced features often need configuration or plugins to shine. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Flexible Self-Hosted Control, But UI and Plugin Ecosystem Feel Behind"
What do you like best about Mattermost?

What I appreciate most about Mattermost is the level of control and flexibility it gives me. Because I run it self-hosted, I can keep everything within my own infrastructure, so performance, privacy, and compliance stay in my hands instead of being tied to a third-party SaaS environment. For engineering teams, that kind of autonomy is a genuine advantage.

I also value the developer-friendly workflow. Channels and threads remain easy to follow even when conversations get busy, and integrations tend to behave predictably. With webhooks, slash commands, and custom bots, it’s straightforward to tailor Mattermost to internal workflows rather than forcing the team to fit a rigid tool. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Mattermost?

The biggest downside for me is that parts of the platform still feel a bit dated compared with newer collaboration tools. The UI is functional and reliable, but it isn’t as polished or modern as some alternatives, which can make the overall experience feel a little utilitarian.

Self-hosting is definitely a strength, but it also comes with extra overhead. Upgrades, backups, and plugin management require ongoing maintenance, and even small configuration issues can take time to troubleshoot. If you don’t have a solid DevOps setup in place, that operational burden can add up quickly.

The plugin ecosystem also feels more limited than Slack or Teams. While the core integrations work well, there are times when I wish there were more out-of-the-box options, rather than having to build custom bots or scripts to fill the gaps. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
