What I like most about Grafana is its vendor-agnostic approach and overall flexibility. You’re not locked into a single ecosystem; instead, you can pull together metrics, logs, and traces from a wide range of data sources (Prometheus, CloudWatch, Elasticsearch, SQL databases) into unified, highly customizable dashboards. The visualization features feel mature, alerting is easy to set up, and the large open-source community provides pre-built dashboards for nearly every common workload or infrastructure stack. The biggest challenge for me is the learning curve. If you’re not already comfortable with query languages like PromQL or LogQL, building custom panels and drilling into specific metrics can feel pretty intimidating at first. Bringing on team members who aren’t deeply technical also takes some extra time, along with a bit of coaching to get everyone up to speed.

A smaller but still noticeable pain point is dashboard housekeeping. After the team has created dozens of dashboards and folders, keeping things organized—especially permissions—and avoiding duplicate or overlapping views can get messy. The main thing I’d point out is the learning curve. It looks simple on the surface, but as soon as you want to do anything beyond basic panels, you end up diving into PromQL and alerting configuration, and the docs kind of assume you already know what you’re doing. Responsible for infrastructure and deployment of Web apps. Traffic drops Real Time Monitoring, Server Health Monitoring and Custom Application logs monitoring are achieved using Grafana. It's connected primarily to Prometheus and our AWS CloudWatch data to monitor all from a single browser tab.What's great is you don't need to create things from scratch very often. Of course if I require a dashboard for our Nginx servers or Node backend, with an easy way to grab a community dashboard ID, then whip that thing in and customize the panel names to my own ones. Did not interfere with a high-resolution dataset anymore, and didn't colorkill the browser like our old monitoring tools did. I really appreciate the ability of putting annotations onto the graphs as well. Doing a push for new web hotfixes, that exact time will be marked on the graph, allowing us to be 100% certain if that time and push resulted in a rise in CPU or API errors. Offices with a medium size can get quite messy when it comes to dashboards. Users overwrite each other's panels by accident as built-in version history can be difficult to use. You'd need to export every dashboard as a JSON file, push that file to a Git repo, if you want to do a proper version control, which is yet another painstaking step to take. Moreover, there is always a chance of community developed third party plugins breaking when Grafana has a major release. I like the excellent dashboard and visualizations, which make monitoring data easy to understand. Monitoring is very useful for checking service availability and reachability. I also like being able to monitor uptime, latency, SSL expiry, and service frequency all in one place. It’s easy to spot unusual latency spikes or performance issues, and the flexible time-range selections help when investigating historical incidents.

It supports multiple data sources and integrations, and it provides a strong centralized view of overall system health. I find the alerting setup and notification policies in Grafana Labs to be overly complex. Debugging routing labels and configuring non-intuitive contact points create unnecessary friction during incident triage. Additionally, the alerting configuration can lead to silent failures with complex contracts and PromQL issues. It would be much more user-friendly if there were an intuitive visual alert builder with interactive policy dry runs and real-time debugging capabilities. A visual routing flowchart and built-in dry simulators for alert paths, along with simplified rule builder templates, would also enhance the user experience significantly. I find Grafana Labs particularly useful in the Fulfillment Innovation Technology (FIT) project for monitoring our application and supporting services in one place. Instead of checking different services separately to find errors or performance issues, I can use dashboards to view important metrics such as API performance, CPU and memory usage, Kafka activity, and other system metrics. This makes it easier to understand the overall health of the application, especially in a production environment.
