Also it takes time and effort in order to learn about its implementation which can be challenging. It takes about 5-10 min to import and show in the "return section." Last software used did not do that and this helpsmake our returns more accurate. **What do you dislike about Avalara?** It is slow. Waiting for transactions to populate in the returns tab takes a while. Sometimes I will import only a few line transactions and it would take way longer than what our other software would take. There are also too many required columns for importing. **What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?** We cannot import by geocode at the moment. Some of our clients don't provide us that dat and do not want to change that. But the best part is checking the sales or use tax rate at the "rooftop" level. You can even put in a latitude and longitude to get the exact spot! It has good integration with WooCommerce for e-commerce sales tax calculations. **What do you dislike about Avalara?** Their business model comes pretty much straight out of Spirit Airlines. However much you think it will cost, it will probably be double that. They charge for transactions, adjustments to transactions, API calls, setting up your returns, and sending your returns. If you have integrations with other systems like an ERP system, it won't work for any off-standard transaction like a credit memo or customer refund. It's easy to rack up transaction costs of $1-2 per transaction. If you have any low-value transactions, that's unaffordable. The customer support process is like the other reviewers mentioned - which is like dealing with the government. This is a pity, because they have the potential to dominate this category. But with the current cost and performance level someone else will soon pick up customers like us. **What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?** Solving the byzantine complexity of state sales tax laws in the USA is obviously a challenge, and if Avalara could do that smoothly and in a cost-effective manner with good customer support, that would be amazing. **Official Response from Celina Romera:** > Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. Because sales tax rates change fairly frequently in different regions it's nice to not have to worry about updating those rates. Almost weekly it feels like we receive correspondence from state or local governments stating that their rates have changed. Nothing feels better than just being able to automatically take those letters to the shredder because we know that Avalara will take care of everything on their side. We don't have to worry about remitting payment or filling out long forms. The sales tax forms that we've had to submit manually have been a big pain. Most states have division of revenue websites that seem like they were created decades ago. I've been in the middle of spending hours on a return for the website to have issues and log me out, losing all my progress. Avalara solves that pain. **What do you dislike about Avalara?** Backfiling is harder than I would like it to be. Sometimes Avalara struggles in helping address atypical problems, but if you set everything up correctly within the system, these problems don't happen often. **Recommendations to others considering Avalara:** If you don't want to spend hours each month filing sales tax forms, use Avalara. It's as simple as that. **What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are solving the problem of collecting and remitting sales tax payments. We've saved hundreds of hours by automating the process through Avalara. Literally none. I'll echo what other reviews have said in that their sales team does a great job at selling a service that, quite frankly, does not exist. **What do you dislike about Avalara?** Where do I even begin? Dealing with Avalara feels like dealing with the government. They've got what feels like 10 different teams working with you, each of which only focuses on one specific issue. None of those teams communicate with each other or have any idea what's going on outside of their scope. And god forbid if something doesn't go according to plan. (Hint: Nothing goes according to plan with them.) Here's a boilerplate example of any issue that arises dealing with Avalara: You will tell one contact about your issue, they will loop in a different contact, that contact will send you to customer service, which will send you to the technical team, which will tell you that your stuff isn't set up correctly. Great! How do I set it up correctly? Technical team gives you multiple useless answers because they connect to 30 different services and don't know how to communicate to help you with your specific one. When you finally get the issue sorted, you reach back out to your contacts and attempt to rectify problems that arose from that issue. Your contacts tell you that you will need to pay. You begrudgingly agree to pay them even more money on top of the thousands you already have. They send you to their corrections team, whom you have now paid explicitly to fix your new problems. The corrections team demands you solve 99% of the problems yourself before they finish the job. This entire process involves stonewalling, radio silence, and a complete lack of active effort on anyone's part at Avalara. It also takes 6 months. Or more. If the above sounds like a nightmare scenario, and you couldn't possibly hope to run a business under these conditions, with states breathing down your neck to get your taxes to them asap, then I am warning you, do NOT work with Avalara. The amount of grey hairs I have experienced from dealing with just this company have probably taken 5 years off of my life. Not worth it. This is your sign to work with anyone else. **What problems is Avalara solving and how is that benefiting you?** Avalara is supposed to help in filing taxes. In reality all they accomplish is creating headaches and making tax liabilities worse. They do not benefit you, they actively harm your business.
