Ant Renamer is a lightweight, open source software program for the batch renaming of files and folders. Along with being easy-to-use, Ant Renamer provides a massive list of flexible options for applying various renaming rules (ex. String Insertion, Change Case, etc.) to a batch of files. The interface is also very easy to understand, with all controls divided between three tabs. Perhaps my favorite aspect of Ant Renamer is how quickly it works. Using it, I've been able to rename thousands of files in a fraction of the time it would take other programs. As an open-source project, Ant Renamer seems to be primarily maintained by one private individual, instead of by a corporation that specializes in development. Thus, the software isn't updated very frequently, nor are new features added with any regularity. I didn't imagine that a program like this existed, and it comes in very handy when you have a bunch of files that you've been collecting without order and you need to rename them all, or change part of the title. It also works for PC folders. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

This software is available in portable version, it means you can copy the app folder on external device and use it without instal it, and it's less than 3Mo. It can be put on external drive and be used on other computers too.

You can make all sorts of differents operations, such as change the extension, enumerations, Single/Multiple String remplacement or use Regular Expressions.

You can also add, move or delete character strings to your files. You have choice with other operations like EXIF info or random names attributions.

The software can also edit metadata like mp3 tag info and date & time edition.

It's really easy to use, 3 differents tabs, on for files, another for action and a third for log. Just drag files inside the first one and switch to the second one to plan what you need. It's possible to batch differents operations in a row and apply it after. The software give you access to a preview on a file selected in the list.

Unlike some of the competing software for renaming large number of files, it's interface isn't cluttered and full of options you don't understand, but what features are there are organized well and explained relatively well. This makes it possible for even users who aren't familiar with the software able to learn it relatively easily.

It's also very stable, and never seems to choke on files with long filenames or paths, unlike some pieces of software made for this purpose. One of the better functions it has over some other similar alternatives is that it's able to rename folders with the same attributes and selectors as are used for files.

While I wouldn't say it's the best software ever for this purpose, it certainly shines in places it's competitors don't.

It includes translations to a very large number of languages as well, helping it be very accessible to anyone who's first language isn't English. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

It does have a bit of a learning curve and you'll still need to rely on RegEX for more complex selecting of items, but at the very least it has a good amount of options for selecting things outside of that.
